Project – Influence of Nutrition and Physical Fitness on the Health Status of Undergraduate Students in Ekiti State, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Health is a fundamental aspect of human existence and a crucial determinant of an individual’s ability to learn, work, and contribute effectively to society. Among the major factors influencing health status are nutrition and physical fitness. Nutrition refers to the intake of food in relation to the body’s dietary needs, while physical fitness involves regular participation in activities that improve endurance, strength, and flexibility (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020). Together, they play an essential role in promoting overall well-being and preventing lifestyle-related diseases.
In recent years, the health status of undergraduate students in Nigeria has become a growing concern due to unhealthy dietary patterns, sedentary lifestyles, and poor fitness habits. University students often experience irregular eating habits, excessive consumption of fast foods, and limited physical activity, which negatively affect their physical and mental health (Adebayo & Ajayi, 2020). The academic demands, stress, and social influences in tertiary institutions also contribute to poor lifestyle choices among students.
In Ekiti State, where several tertiary institutions exist, students’ lifestyles mirror these national trends. Many undergraduates prefer convenience foods over balanced meals, and due to academic workload or limited facilities, they engage in minimal exercise (Ogunleye & Akinola, 2021). These behaviors increase the risk of obesity, hypertension, fatigue, and reduced academic performance. According to Adegboye and Oladipo (2019), students with healthy dietary habits and regular physical exercise routines demonstrate higher levels of concentration, better immune function, and improved mental health.
Therefore, understanding the influence of nutrition and physical fitness on students’ health status is crucial for developing effective health promotion strategies within tertiary institutions. This study examines the relationship between dietary habits, physical fitness, and the overall health status of undergraduate students in Ekiti State, Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increased awareness of healthy living, many undergraduate students continue to adopt unhealthy dietary and physical activity practices. The frequent consumption of junk food, skipping of meals, irregular sleep patterns, and sedentary behaviors have contributed to poor health outcomes among youths in Nigerian tertiary institutions (Eze, 2018). In Ekiti State, observations show that many students suffer from preventable conditions such as fatigue, stress, and weight imbalance, which are often linked to poor nutrition and lack of physical exercise.
The availability of fast-food restaurants near campuses, limited sports infrastructure, and students’ preference for technology-based recreation (e.g., social media and gaming) have further worsened this situation. While some institutions have attempted to promote health education and fitness programs, their effectiveness remains questionable. Therefore, there is a need to empirically investigate how nutrition and physical fitness affect the health status of undergraduate students in Ekiti State, with a view to recommending sustainable lifestyle interventions.
