INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Premarital sex, defined as sexual activity that occurs before marriage, is increasingly recognized as a major public health and social concern worldwide. This concern is particularly acute among teenagers, who are at a critical developmental stage marked by hormonal changes, curiosity, identity exploration, and susceptibility to peer influence. Teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 are especially vulnerable to engaging in experimental sexual behavior without fully understanding the risks or consequences. In Nigeria, the prevalence of premarital sexual activity among teenagers has grown significantly, including in rural communities like Azu in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State. This trend poses serious implications for the reproductive health and future prospects of young people.

In recent years, health experts and community leaders have raised alarms over the increasing number of teenagers reporting reproductive health issues linked to premarital sexual behavior. Adolescents who engage in early sexual activity often lack comprehensive knowledge about contraception, the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and the consequences of unprotected sex. Consequently, they face a heightened risk of unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, pelvic infections, and infertility. Studies such as Arowojolu et al. (2002) have established a strong link between teenage sexual activity and these adverse reproductive health outcomes. These problems are more pronounced in rural settings, where access to quality health information and services is limited.

Azu community, like many others in rural and semi-urban Nigeria, reflects the broader national trends highlighted in the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS, 2018). According to the report, approximately 19% of Nigerian girls aged 15 to 19 have already begun childbearing. The figures are even more concerning in northern Nigeria, where traditional beliefs and gender dynamics sometimes discourage open conversations about sexuality. In Azu, conservative cultural norms, economic limitations, and a lack of adolescent-friendly health services create a difficult environment for teenagers to seek guidance or reproductive care. As a result, many face reproductive health crises in silence, often without adequate medical or emotional support.

Cultural silence and taboos surrounding discussions of sex in Nigerian communities further contribute to the challenge. Parents, guardians, and educators are often reluctant or ill-equipped to engage teenagers in honest and informative conversations about sexual behavior and reproductive health. The stigma attached to adolescent sexuality also means that many young people rely on peers, social media, or misinformation for guidance—sources that often promote risky behavior rather than informed choices (Otoide, Oronsaye, & Okonofua, 2001). In the absence of safe spaces for learning and communication, adolescents are left to navigate complex sexual and reproductive decisions without the tools or knowledge they need to protect themselves.

Moreover, several socio-economic and psychological factors influence the occurrence of premarital sex among teenagers. These include peer pressure, exposure to sexually suggestive media, poverty, low parental involvement, lack of supervision, and experiences of broken homes. Adolescents from economically disadvantaged households may even engage in transactional sex to meet basic needs, while others may do so to gain social acceptance or affection. Such behaviors not only expose teenagers to physical health risks but also to mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, guilt, and low self-worth. Abe (2004) notes that emotional instability resulting from premarital sexual activity can have long-term effects on an adolescent’s self-perception and social relationships.

Given these realities, there is an urgent need to better understand the influence of premarital sex on the reproductive health of teenagers in Azu community. While national-level data provide important insights, local studies are necessary to capture the unique cultural, social, and economic dynamics influencing adolescent behavior in specific communities. Such research will provide evidence-based guidance for stakeholders—including parents, schools, religious institutions, and policymakers—to design interventions that promote healthy sexual behaviors and protect the reproductive rights and well-being of teenagers.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Teenagers in Azu community are increasingly engaging in premarital sexual activities, which expose them to a range of reproductive health risks. Despite the moral, cultural, and religious values that discourage such behaviors, the influence of modern trends, peer pressure, media exposure, and lack of sexual education is fueling a rise in risky sexual practices among adolescents aged 13 to 17. These practices often take place without adequate knowledge of the consequences, such as unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and long-term reproductive health problems. This reality raises serious public health concerns, especially in rural communities where healthcare access and education are limited.

Although both government and non-governmental organizations have initiated programs aimed at improving adolescent reproductive health across Nigeria, there is a significant gap in localized implementation and data collection. National strategies often overlook the unique socio-cultural dynamics of rural areas like Azu in Tafa Local Government Area, leading to generic interventions that may not address the real challenges teenagers face. Consequently, high rates of teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and untreated STIs continue to persist despite the existence of national policies and advocacy efforts.

In Azu community, many teenagers lack access to accurate and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education. Parents and guardians, who should serve as primary sources of guidance, are often silent on these matters due to cultural taboos and embarrassment. As a result, adolescents tend to rely on peers or social media for information—sources that may perpetuate myths and misinformation. This knowledge gap increases their vulnerability, as many engage in sexual activities without understanding the importance of contraception, consent, or the dangers of unprotected sex.

The situation is worsened by limited access to youth-friendly health services in the community. Health centers in Azu often lack the facilities, trained personnel, or privacy needed to effectively counsel and treat adolescents facing reproductive health issues. Teenagers who become pregnant are frequently stigmatized, leading some to seek unsafe abortions or drop out of school. Others may live with undiagnosed STIs, which can cause long-term health complications such as infertility or pelvic inflammatory disease. These issues not only affect individual well-being but also have social and economic consequences for the community at large.

Furthermore, socio-economic factors such as poverty, broken homes, and lack of supervision play a significant role in increasing adolescent exposure to risky sexual behavior. Some teenagers engage in transactional sex to meet basic needs, while others do so out of emotional neglect or curiosity. Without timely intervention and a better understanding of the root causes of these behaviors, many more teenagers in Azu may fall victim to reproductive health challenges that could have been prevented through education, empowerment, and support services.

This study is, therefore, necessary to investigate the specific ways in which premarital sex is influencing the reproductive health of teenagers in Azu community. It aims to fill the gap in local data and provide evidence-based insights that can inform targeted and culturally relevant interventions. Without such empirical understanding, efforts to combat the growing reproductive health crisis among adolescents in Tafa Local Government Area may continue to be ineffective, misaligned, or unsustainable.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of premarital sex on the reproductive health of teenagers aged 13–17 in Azu community, Tafa LGA, Niger State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Investigate the prevalence of premarital sexual activity among teenagers in Azu community.
2. Identify the common reproductive health issues experienced by teenagers engaging in premarital sex.
3. Examine the factors contributing to premarital sexual behavior among teenagers.
4. Assess the level of awareness and use of reproductive health services among sexually active teenagers.

1.4 Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

1. What is the prevalence of premarital sexual activity among teenagers in Azu community?
2. What reproductive health challenges are commonly associated with premarital sex among teenagers in the community?
3. What factors influence teenagers to engage in premarital sexual behavior?
4. To what extent are teenagers in Azu community aware of and utilize reproductive health services?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between premarital sex and reproductive health issues among teenagers in Azu Community.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between premarital sex and reproductive health issues among teenagers in Azu Community.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways. Firstly, it provides empirical evidence on the link between premarital sex and reproductive health challenges among teenagers in a rural Nigerian context. Secondly, it offers insights to parents, teachers, community leaders, and health practitioners on the urgent need for sexual health education and adolescent-friendly services. Thirdly, findings from this study will guide policymakers in developing effective adolescent health strategies, particularly in underserved areas like Azu.

In addition, the research will serve as a resource for academic inquiry and further research in adolescent reproductive health. Understanding teenagers’ sexual behavior and its consequences can inform comprehensive school-based and community-based interventions aimed at reducing risk and promoting healthy development.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to teenagers aged 13–17 years in Azu community, Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State. It focuses specifically on the practice of premarital sex and its influence on the reproductive health of this age group. The study will not cover other age categories or communities outside Azu. It also centers on selected reproductive health indicators such as STIs, teenage pregnancy, contraceptive use, and access to healthcare services.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Premarital Sex: Premarital sex refers to sexual intercourse that occurs between individuals who are not legally married to each other. Within the context of this study, it specifically involves teenagers engaging in consensual sexual activity before marriage, often in secrecy and without adequate knowledge of sexual and reproductive health. Premarital sex is influenced by a variety of factors including peer pressure, media exposure, emotional curiosity, and lack of parental supervision. In many cultural settings like Azu community, premarital sex is frowned upon, yet its occurrence among adolescents continues to rise, raising significant public health concerns.

Teenagers: Teenagers are young individuals whose ages range from 13 to 17 years. This stage of life is characterized by rapid physical growth, hormonal changes, identity exploration, and emotional development. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable to engaging in risky behaviors, including premarital sex, due to peer influence, misinformation, and inadequate guidance. In this study, the term “teenagers” specifically refers to adolescents in Azu community within this age bracket, whose reproductive health may be affected by their sexual behaviors.

Reproductive Health: Reproductive health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being in all aspects relating to the reproductive system. It goes beyond the absence of disease or infirmity and includes the ability to have a responsible, satisfying, and safe sex life. Reproductive health encompasses access to accurate information, modern contraceptive methods, STI prevention and treatment, safe maternal health services, and the right to make informed decisions about one’s reproductive life. Among teenagers, maintaining reproductive health involves education, protection, and access to youth-friendly health services.

Influence: In this study, “influence” refers to the degree to which premarital sexual activity impacts the reproductive health of teenagers. This influence can be either positive—such as increased awareness and responsibility when proper education is provided—or negative, leading to adverse outcomes like STIs, unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and emotional distress. The concept of influence also encompasses how environmental, social, and psychological factors mediate the relationship between adolescent sexual behavior and reproductive health outcomes.

Azu Community: Azu community is a rural settlement located in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. The community is characterized by limited access to health and educational services, traditional cultural values, and modest economic development. Like many rural communities in Nigeria, Azu is affected by social taboos around sex education, poverty, and inadequate infrastructure for adolescent health services. These factors combine to create a setting in which premarital sex among teenagers can lead to significant reproductive health challenges.
