Project – Influence of Promotional Strategies on Sales Performance of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Companies in Lagos State, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
In today’s highly competitive business environment, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies operate in a market characterized by intense rivalry, changing consumer preferences, and increasing product alternatives. FMCG products such as beverages, toiletries, packaged foods, and household goods are consumed frequently and purchased quickly, making marketing communication and promotional strategies critical to organizational success. Promotional strategies are coordinated marketing efforts used by organizations to inform, persuade, and remind consumers about their products in order to influence purchasing decisions and improve sales performance (Kotler & Keller, 2016).
Sales performance refers to the effectiveness of an organization in generating revenue through product sales over a specific period. It is often measured in terms of sales volume, market share, profitability, and customer retention. In the FMCG sector, sales performance is strongly influenced by how well companies communicate product value to consumers and how effectively they differentiate their products from competitors (Armstrong & Cunningham, 2012).
Promotional strategies include advertising, sales promotion, public relations, personal selling, sponsorship, and digital marketing. These tools are used either individually or in an integrated manner to create awareness, stimulate demand, and encourage product trial and repeat purchase. According to Belch and Belch (2015), promotional strategies are essential components of marketing communication because they help organizations reach target audiences and influence consumer behaviour.
In Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial hub, FMCG companies face intense competition due to the presence of both local and multinational brands. The market is highly saturated, and consumers are constantly exposed to multiple promotional messages from competing firms. As a result, companies must adopt effective promotional strategies to maintain visibility, attract customers, and sustain sales performance.
Organizations such as Nigerian Breweries Plc and other FMCG companies in Lagos State invest heavily in promotional activities such as television advertising, radio campaigns, billboards, sponsorship of events, discount offers, and digital media campaigns. These promotional tools are designed to influence consumer perception and increase product demand in a highly competitive market environment.
The rise of digital media and social networking platforms has further transformed promotional strategies in the FMCG industry. Consumers now interact with brands through Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X (Twitter), where they are exposed to targeted advertisements, influencer marketing, and interactive promotional content. This shift has made promotional strategies more dynamic, measurable, and consumer-driven.
Despite the widespread use of promotional strategies, FMCG companies in Lagos State still face challenges in achieving consistent sales performance. Factors such as message inconsistency, poor targeting, high advertising costs, and weak integration of promotional tools may reduce the effectiveness of marketing communication efforts. This raises questions about the actual impact of promotional strategies on sales performance.
Furthermore, consumer behaviour in the FMCG market is influenced by psychological, social, and economic factors, making it difficult for organizations to predict purchasing decisions accurately. While promotional strategies are designed to stimulate demand, it is not always clear how significantly they influence actual sales outcomes in a competitive environment.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the influence of promotional strategies on sales performance of FMCG companies in Lagos State, Nigeria, with specific reference to industry practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The FMCG sector in Lagos State is one of the most competitive markets in Nigeria, with numerous local and international brands competing for consumer attention and market share. In such a saturated market, promotional strategies are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing sales performance. However, despite heavy investment in promotional activities, many FMCG companies continue to experience fluctuating sales performance.
One major problem is the inefficiency in the design and implementation of promotional strategies. Many companies use multiple promotional tools without proper coordination, leading to inconsistent messaging across advertising, sales promotion, and digital platforms. This lack of integration reduces the overall effectiveness of promotional efforts in influencing consumer behaviour.
Another challenge is the difficulty in measuring the direct impact of promotional strategies on sales performance. Although companies invest significantly in advertising campaigns, sponsorships, and discounts, it is often unclear how these efforts translate into actual sales growth. This makes it difficult for managers to evaluate the return on investment in promotional activities.
In addition, consumers in Lagos State are exposed to a high level of advertising clutter, which reduces the effectiveness of promotional messages. As consumers become more selective and less responsive to advertisements, FMCG companies struggle to maintain customer attention and influence purchase decisions.
For companies such as Nigerian Breweries Plc and other FMCG firms operating in Lagos State, sustaining strong sales performance remains a major concern despite continuous promotional activities. This raises the question of whether promotional strategies are truly effective in driving sales performance in the FMCG industry.
Furthermore, changing consumer preferences, inflation, and economic instability in Nigeria also affect purchasing power, making it even more challenging for promotional strategies to guarantee improved sales performance.
Therefore, there is a need to critically examine the extent to which promotional strategies influence sales performance in FMCG companies in Lagos State, Nigeria.
