INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is universally acknowledged as a key driver of social, economic, and human development. For learning to be effective, students must have access not only to quality teachers and a relevant curriculum but also to schools situated in conducive locations. The location of a school refers to its geographic setting, which may be urban, semi-urban, or rural, and the surrounding physical, social, and environmental factors that influence teaching and learning. School location can significantly impact students’ school attendance, accessibility, safety, and academic achievement (Adewale & Oloyede, 2018).

Globally, research indicates that students’ proximity to schools and the characteristics of school locations influence attendance and performance. Students attending schools situated in easily accessible, safe, and well-serviced areas are more likely to attend regularly and perform better academically. Conversely, schools located in remote, unsafe, or poorly serviced areas often experience high absenteeism, dropout rates, and poor academic outcomes (UNESCO, 2015).

In Nigeria, the influence of school location on students’ educational experiences has become increasingly relevant due to rapid urbanisation and population growth. Urban schools generally benefit from better infrastructure, proximity to teachers’ residences, access to electricity, transport services, and other amenities. In contrast, rural schools may be located in areas with poor roads, long distances from students’ homes, inadequate security, and limited access to learning materials. These disparities can adversely affect students’ attendance and academic performance (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2013).

Ajaokuta in Kogi State presents a typical example where school location may influence educational outcomes. The town comprises urban and peri-urban communities as well as remote rural settlements. Secondary schools in the urban and semi-urban areas generally have better access to facilities, transport, electricity, and teaching resources, whereas rural schools face challenges such as poor road networks, long commuting distances for students, and limited access to instructional materials (Kogi State Ministry of Education, 2021). These disparities can result in irregular attendance, late arrivals, early departures, and suboptimal academic achievement among students in rural areas.

Empirical studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between school location, attendance, and academic performance. Students attending schools in accessible and secure areas tend to have higher attendance rates and better academic achievement than those attending schools in isolated or underdeveloped areas (Adeyemi & Olorunsola, 2017). Despite the significance of school location, there is limited research focusing specifically on its impact on students’ attendance and academic achievement in Ajaokuta, Kogi State. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining how school location influences these outcomes, providing evidence that can inform policy and educational planning.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Students’ attendance and academic achievement are critical indicators of educational quality. In Ajaokuta, Kogi State, disparities in school location have created unequal access to education. Secondary schools located in remote or rural parts of the LGA face challenges such as poor road networks, long distances from students’ homes, inadequate security, and limited access to electricity and learning materials. These factors can lead to irregular attendance, lateness, absenteeism, and ultimately lower academic performance.

Conversely, schools located in urban or semi-urban areas tend to enjoy better infrastructure, transport accessibility, and availability of instructional materials, leading to more consistent attendance and improved academic outcomes. The unequal distribution of schools and varying quality of infrastructure in different locations thus create disparities in students’ educational experiences in Ajaokuta.

Despite government interventions aimed at improving school access and quality, the relationship between school location and educational outcomes in Ajaokuta has not been adequately studied. The lack of empirical evidence makes it difficult for policymakers, school administrators, and education planners to address location-based disparities effectively. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the influence of school location on students’ attendance and academic achievement in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of school location on students’ attendance and academic achievement in secondary schools in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. examine the geographical distribution of secondary schools in Ajaokuta;

2. determine students’ attendance patterns in relation to school location;

3. assess students’ academic achievement based on school location; and

4. identify challenges affecting attendance and academic performance due to school location.

1.5 Research Questions

1. What is the distribution of secondary schools in Ajaokuta, Kogi State?

2. How does school location affect students’ attendance in secondary schools?

3. How does school location influence students’ academic achievement?

4. What challenges arise from school location that affect attendance and performance?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

H₀: School location has no significant influence on students’ attendance and academic achievement in secondary schools in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to policymakers, school administrators, teachers, parents, and researchers. Policymakers and the Kogi State Ministry of Education will gain empirical evidence to guide school siting, resource allocation, and transportation policies. School administrators and teachers will understand how location-related factors affect attendance and learning outcomes. Parents will be aware of the potential challenges their children face, and researchers will find the study valuable for future research on the relationship between school location and educational outcomes.

1.8 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to secondary schools in Ajaokuta, Kogi State. It focuses on school location as the independent variable and students’ attendance and academic achievement as the dependent variables. Other factors affecting academic performance, such as teacher quality, curriculum, and home environment, are acknowledged but not examined in this study.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

• School Location: The geographic setting of a school, classified as urban, semi-urban, or rural.

• Students’ Attendance: The frequency and regularity with which students are present in school.

• Academic Achievement: Students’ performance in examinations and assessments.

• Ajaokuta: A local government area in Kogi State where the study is conducted.
