INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Throughout history, societies have used music to convey social values, celebrate significant events, and transmit cultural heritage. In the Christian context, music occupies an especially sacred place as a tool for worship and spiritual connection with God. It provides a means through which believers express their faith, gratitude, and devotion, while also reinforcing moral teachings embedded in biblical principles (Adedeji, 2010).

Christian music, particularly hymns, psalms, and contemporary gospel songs, serves both a theological and moral function. It reinforces the teachings of Scripture by reminding believers of virtues such as love, humility, and righteousness. For many Christian youths, gospel music acts as a spiritual guide that shapes their worldview and moral character (Agu, 2019). However, in recent decades, the global spread of secular music has brought about a cultural shift that challenges the influence of religious and moral music traditions. Genres such as hip-hop, afrobeat, pop, and R&B dominate the airwaves and digital media platforms, capturing the attention of young listeners, including those within the church (Nwosu, 2018).

Secular music, as opposed to sacred or gospel music, is characterized by its focus on non-religious themes. These themes often revolve around love, pleasure, fame, materialism, and personal freedom (Olayinka, 2017). While not all secular songs are inherently immoral, a significant number promote messages that conflict with Christian ethics. The use of explicit language, suggestive lyrics, and provocative dance styles raises concerns about the moral consequences for impressionable youths who consume such content regularly (Agu, 2019). This exposure can lead to the normalization of values and behaviors that contradict biblical teachings.

In Owerri Municipal, Imo State, the proliferation of secular music has become highly visible through modern media outlets such as radio, television, and social networking platforms. Christian youths, like their non-Christian peers, are constantly exposed to music videos and lyrics that glorify wealth, sexual indulgence, and rebellion against authority (Eke, 2020). Peer influence also plays a major role, as young people often emulate the dress styles, speech patterns, and attitudes of their favorite secular artists. This tension between cultural modernity and Christian morality creates a moral dilemma for many youths who wish to remain spiritually committed but are simultaneously drawn to popular music trends.

According to Ogbu (2016), music is one of the most powerful forms of socialization because it not only entertains but also shapes perceptions, attitudes, and behavior. Repeated exposure to particular lyrical themes can subtly alter a listener’s moral compass, influencing how they view relationships, authority, and moral responsibility. The influence of secular music extends beyond individual behavior to collective identity formation. Music is a social force that shapes not only what people do but also how they perceive themselves. For many Christian youths, the adoption of secular music preferences has become a marker of modernity and social acceptance. The situation calls for renewed attention from Christian educators, church leaders, and parents who must help youths navigate this moral tension.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of secular music on the moral values of Christian youths in Owerri Municipal. It aims to determine how exposure to secular music affects their moral reasoning, decision-making, and spiritual commitment. By identifying the specific elements of secular music that most strongly shape behavior—whether lyrics, rhythm, or performance style—the study hopes to contribute to understanding the complex relationship between popular culture and moral formation among Christian youths. Ultimately, it seeks to provide practical recommendations for the church and families on how to engage with music in a way that supports rather than undermines moral and spiritual development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In recent years, the modern entertainment industry has experienced unprecedented growth, driven by technological advancements and globalization. Secular music has become a dominant force in the media landscape, accessible through platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Spotify, and various social media applications. This easy accessibility has made secular music an integral part of the daily lives of young people, including Christian youths. Despite their regular participation in church activities, many are increasingly influenced by the sounds, messages, and lifestyles promoted through popular music. The media’s portrayal of secular musicians as symbols of success and fame has further amplified their influence among young Christians, who often perceive them as role models worthy of admiration (Ekwueme, 2019).

As secular music continues to dominate youth culture, it has subtly reshaped the moral compass of many Christian youths. Instead of internalizing the virtues of modesty, humility, and purity taught in Scripture, some have begun to adopt attitudes and behaviors that reflect worldly ideologies. This includes an increased fascination with fame, wealth, sensual pleasure, and materialism—values that are commonly celebrated in secular songs (Afolabi, 2020). Such tendencies conflict with the biblical standards of moral discipline and holiness that should characterize the Christian lifestyle. Consequently, many Christian youths find themselves in a moral dilemma, trying to reconcile their faith with the seductive pull of popular music culture.

In summary, the problem that this study seeks to address is the growing tension between the moral expectations of Christianity and the pervasive influence of secular music among Christian youths in Owerri Municipal. The dominance of secular music in youth culture appears to be reshaping their values, attitudes, and spiritual commitments in ways that contradict biblical teachings. Yet, there remains insufficient empirical data to confirm the extent and nature of this influence. This study, therefore, aims to fill that gap by investigating how secular music impacts the moral values of Christian youths, with a view to recommending practical measures that can help preserve their moral and spiritual integrity.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The general purpose of this study is to examine the influence of secular music on the moral values of Christian youths in Owerri Municipal.
Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Determine the extent to which Christian youths in Owerri Municipal are exposed to secular music.
2. Examine the nature of moral values affected by secular music among Christian youths.
3. Identify the specific aspects of secular music (lyrics, rhythm, performance style) that most influence moral behavior.
4. Suggest strategies for guiding Christian youths toward responsible music consumption and moral uprightness.

1.4 Research Question

To guide the study, the following research questions were formulated:

1. To what extent are Christian youths in Owerri Municipal exposed to secular music?
2. What aspects of moral values are influenced by secular music among Christian youths?
3. Which elements of secular music have the strongest impact on the moral behavior of Christian youths?
4. How can the church help Christian youths resist the negative influence of secular music?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

For empirical testing, the following null hypothesis was formulated:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between exposure to secular music and the moral values of Christian youths in Owerri Municipal.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between exposure to secular music and the moral values of Christian youths in Owerri Municipal.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be of great significance to church leaders, pastors, and youth ministers who play an essential role in nurturing the spiritual and moral lives of young Christians. By understanding how secular music influences the moral values of Christian youths, church leaders will be better equipped to design effective counseling, discipleship, and youth development programs. These programs can include educational workshops, gospel music mentorship, and Bible-based discussions on media influence, aimed at helping youths make informed and morally sound choices regarding the kind of music they consume. This study is limited to Christian youths in Owerri Municipal, Imo State. It focuses on their listening habits, perceptions, and moral attitudes as influenced by secular music. The study does not cover gospel or religious music, nor does it examine adult Christian populations.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Secular Music: This refers to music that is non-religious in nature and is primarily produced for entertainment rather than spiritual edification. It often focuses on themes such as love, fame, pleasure, wealth, and personal freedom. In this study, secular music encompasses popular genres such as hip-hop, afrobeat, pop, and R&B, which are commonly consumed by youths in Owerri Municipal.

Moral Values: These are principles or standards of behavior that guide individuals in determining what is right or wrong according to societal and religious norms. Within the context of this study, moral values refer to Christian ethical teachings such as honesty, purity, humility, respect, and self-discipline, which influence how youths make moral decisions and conduct themselves.

Christian Youths: This term refers to young individuals between the ages of 13 and 30 who identify as Christians and actively participate in church activities. In this study, Christian youths represent the segment of the population in Owerri Municipal whose moral and spiritual development may be affected by exposure to secular music.

Influence: Influence in this study refers to the power or capacity of secular music to shape, modify, or alter the attitudes, behaviors, beliefs, and moral values of Christian youths. It includes both direct and indirect effects of music exposure on listeners’ moral reasoning and lifestyle choices.

Exposure: This term denotes the degree or frequency with which Christian youths come into contact with secular music through different media platforms such as television, radio, social media, streaming services, and live performances. The study measures how such exposure correlates with their moral attitudes and behaviors.

Moral Behavior: This refers to the outward expression of an individual’s moral values through actions, speech, and lifestyle choices. In this study, moral behavior includes the extent to which Christian youths’ conduct aligns with or deviates from biblical standards due to the influence of secular music.
