Project – Influence of Social Media Prophetic Messages on Christian Faith and Spiritual Discernment among Pentecostal Youths: A Study of Selected Churches in Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Christianity is fundamentally concerned with the development of a believer’s relationship with God, understanding of Scripture, moral conduct and ability to distinguish truth from error. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the need for Christians to examine teachings carefully and to exercise spiritual discernment. In 1 John 4:1, believers are instructed not to believe every spirit but to test the spirits to determine whether they are from God. Similarly, Acts 17:11 commends the Bereans because they examined the Scriptures to verify the teachings they received. Spiritual discernment is therefore an important dimension of Christian faith because believers are expected to evaluate teachings, prophetic claims and spiritual experiences in the light of biblical truth. In contemporary Christianity, this responsibility has become increasingly significant because religious teachings are no longer communicated only through the physical church but through television, websites, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and other digital platforms. Campbell (2012) explains that digital media have created new environments in which religious beliefs and practices are communicated, interpreted and negotiated, while Campbell and Bellar (2021) identify shifting religious authority as one of the important features of digital religion.
The emergence of social media has significantly transformed the manner in which religious leaders communicate with their audiences. Unlike traditional forms of religious communication, social media enables religious personalities to communicate directly with large audiences without depending entirely on conventional church structures or mainstream media organizations. Sermons, prophetic declarations, prayer sessions, testimonies, biblical interpretations and personal spiritual messages can be recorded and distributed almost immediately to thousands or millions of followers. Hutchings (2017) observes that digital environments create new forms of religious community, leadership and interaction, while Campbell (2012) argues that digital religion should be understood as a space where online and offline religious practices increasingly intersect. In Nigeria, this transformation is particularly relevant to Pentecostal Christianity because Pentecostal churches have historically demonstrated considerable interest in communication technologies as instruments for evangelism and religious expansion. Omotayo (2017), in a study of Pentecostal churches in Ibadan, found that information and communication technologies had been adopted extensively by Pentecostal churches, principally for gospel propagation. This development provides an important foundation for understanding why social media has become an increasingly significant environment for Pentecostal religious communication.
The growth of social media has also created new opportunities for Pentecostal prophets and ministers to reach young people. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) found that Pentecostal churches in Nigeria increasingly use online media to target young people through e-evangelism and other forms of digital religious communication. Their study shows that young people constitute an important audience within the contemporary Nigerian Pentecostal media environment and that online platforms have become significant channels through which Pentecostal organizations communicate religious messages. The importance of this development lies in the fact that youths can now follow religious personalities who may not belong to their local congregation and may receive teachings from multiple ministers simultaneously. A young Pentecostal believer in Lagos can therefore listen to the message of a local pastor in the morning, watch a prophetic broadcast from another minister later in the day and encounter several additional prophetic declarations through TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or WhatsApp. Campbell (2012) describes this transformation in terms of changing patterns of religious authority within digital environments, while Hutchings (2017) notes that online religious spaces generate new forms of religious interaction and community.
Prophetic ministry occupies an important position within Pentecostal Christianity because prophecy is traditionally associated with divine communication, spiritual guidance, encouragement, warning and edification. The New Testament recognizes prophecy among the spiritual gifts given to the church and also provides principles for evaluating prophetic claims (1 Corinthians 12:10; 14:29; 1 Thessalonians 5:20–21). The biblical instruction to test prophetic utterances is particularly important in a digital environment where almost anyone can create and distribute religious content to a large audience. The contemporary social media environment does not necessarily distinguish between established church leaders, emerging ministers, Christian content creators, personal opinions and individuals who make prophetic claims without recognized accountability structures. Campbell and Bellar (2021) explain that digital religion involves shifting authority, while Hutchings (2017) demonstrates that online religious environments can generate new forms of leadership and community. In the Nigerian context, recent scholarship similarly indicates that digital media are reshaping religious authority and communication within Pentecostalism, making the examination of online prophetic communication increasingly relevant to Christian religious studies.
The relationship between social media prophetic messages and Christian faith is also important because repeated religious exposure may contribute to the way young believers understand Christianity and practise their faith. Christian faith involves belief in God, trust in Christ, commitment to biblical teachings and participation in Christian practices. Social media can provide positive opportunities for this development by giving young Christians access to sermons, Bible teachings, worship music, prayer programmes, testimonies and Christian educational materials. Megwas, Ihechu, Benson-Eluwa and Osuagwu (2025), in their study of digital Christianity among Christians in Southeast Nigeria, found that faith-based social media platforms have become increasingly relevant to Christian spiritual engagement and examined issues of exposure, knowledge, use and perceived benefits and challenges of digital faith expressions. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) similarly establish that Nigerian Pentecostal churches use online media extensively in reaching youths. These developments suggest that social media prophetic messages may serve as an additional source of spiritual encouragement and religious instruction; however, their influence on Christian faith needs to be examined empirically rather than assumed.
At the same time, the digital environment presents challenges for spiritual discernment because the large quantity and rapid circulation of religious messages can make it difficult for young believers to distinguish between biblically grounded teaching and unverified prophetic claims. Social media platforms encourage brief, emotionally engaging and highly shareable content, while prophetic messages may sometimes be presented through dramatic testimonies, predictions, declarations or claims of supernatural revelation. The digital circulation of such material may increase visibility without necessarily establishing theological credibility. Odewale (2026) argues that digital media have reshaped religious authority, worship practices and communication within Nigerian Pentecostalism, while recent scholarship on neo-prophetic movements in African Pentecostalism identifies theological ambiguity, questions of accountability and concerns about spiritual manipulation as issues requiring serious theological attention (Odewale, 2026; Kgatle, 2026). These concerns do not mean that social media prophetic messages are necessarily false or harmful; rather, they highlight the importance of investigating whether Pentecostal youths possess and apply biblical criteria for evaluating the messages they encounter.
Lagos State provides an important context for examining this subject because it is a major centre of Pentecostal Christianity, youth culture, media activity and digital communication in Nigeria. Pentecostal youths in Lagos operate within a highly connected environment in which physical church activities and digital religious experiences increasingly overlap. A young person may attend a local Pentecostal congregation while simultaneously following several prophets and pastors on social media, participating in online prayer groups, watching livestreamed services and sharing prophetic declarations through messaging platforms. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) demonstrate the growing use of online media by Nigerian Pentecostal churches in reaching youths, while Omotayo (2017) provides earlier evidence of the adoption of communication technologies by Pentecostal churches for gospel propagation. Campbell (2012) and Hutchings (2017) further establish that digital environments can influence religious authority, community and practice. Despite this growing body of scholarship, there is a need for a focused empirical study of how social media prophetic messages relate specifically to Christian faith and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in Lagos State. This study therefore investigates the influence of social media prophetic messages on Christian faith and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing use of social media for Christian communication has changed the environment within which Pentecostal youths receive religious teachings. Young Christians who previously depended mainly on pastors, Bible teachers, youth leaders and physical church programmes can now access messages from numerous religious personalities through their mobile phones. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) found that Nigerian Pentecostal churches increasingly use online media to reach young people, while Omotayo (2017) established that Pentecostal churches have adopted information and communication technologies for gospel propagation. Although increased access to religious information can provide opportunities for spiritual growth, it can also expose youths to diverse teachings that vary considerably in biblical interpretation and theological emphasis. The problem is therefore not simply the availability of online Christian content, but whether Pentecostal youths can distinguish reliable biblical teaching from prophetic claims that may be inadequately supported by Scripture.
A second problem concerns the changing nature of religious authority in the social media environment. In traditional Pentecostal church structures, pastors and church leaders operate within identifiable congregations and organizational structures that provide some degree of accountability. Social media, however, enables religious personalities to establish large followings beyond their local congregations and to communicate prophetic messages directly to audiences without necessarily having the same institutional relationships with those audiences. Campbell (2012) and Campbell and Bellar (2021) identify shifting authority as a major characteristic of digital religion, while Hutchings (2017) shows that online religious environments can generate new forms of leadership and community. Consequently, Pentecostal youths may be influenced by religious personalities whose teachings they encounter frequently online but whose doctrinal background, accountability structures and theological positions they may not fully understand. This raises the need to examine how young believers evaluate the authority and credibility of social media prophets.
A third problem relates to the possible effect of repeated exposure to prophetic messages on Christian faith and spiritual discernment. Prophetic declarations concerning healing, breakthrough, relationships, employment, wealth, protection, marriage and future events can attract considerable attention on social media because they address issues that are important to young people. The repeated consumption of such content may contribute to the formation of beliefs and expectations about God’s activity and Christian living. At the same time, Megwas et al. (2025) demonstrate that digital Christianity has become an important aspect of contemporary Christian engagement, while recent research on digital Pentecostalism identifies changes in religious authority and communication resulting from new media technologies. The challenge is therefore to establish empirically whether exposure to social media prophetic messages is associated with strengthened Christian faith and biblical engagement, or whether it creates difficulties for spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths.
The fourth problem is the limited empirical evidence specifically addressing the influence of social media prophets on both Christian faith and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in Lagos State. Existing studies have examined the adoption of information and communication technologies by Nigerian Pentecostal churches, the use of online media to target youths, and the broader development of digital Christianity (Omotayo, 2017; Afolabi & Oderinde, 2024; Megwas et al., 2025). Recent scholarship has also examined the transformation of religious authority and communication through digital media in Nigerian Pentecostalism (Odewale, 2026). However, these studies do not fully answer the specific question of how Pentecostal youths in selected Lagos churches respond to social media prophetic messages, how such messages influence their Christian faith, and whether their ability to test and evaluate prophetic claims corresponds with biblical principles of spiritual discernment. This study is therefore designed to provide empirical evidence on the relationship between social media prophetic messages, Christian faith and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of social media prophetic messages on Christian faith and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- examine the extent to which Pentecostal youths are exposed to social media prophetic messages in selected churches in Lagos State;
- assess the influence of social media prophetic messages on the Christian faith of Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State;
- examine the level of spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in evaluating prophetic messages received through social media; and
- determine the relationship between exposure to social media prophetic messages and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- To what extent are Pentecostal youths exposed to social media prophetic messages in selected churches in Lagos State?
- To what extent do social media prophetic messages influence the Christian faith of Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State?
- What is the level of spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in evaluating prophetic messages received through social media?
- What relationship exists between exposure to social media prophetic messages and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between exposure to social media prophetic messages and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to Pentecostal youths because it will encourage greater awareness of the need to evaluate prophetic messages carefully. The findings may help young Christians understand the importance of comparing prophetic claims with Scripture rather than accepting messages simply because they are popular or delivered by highly followed personalities.
The study will also be significant to pastors and Pentecostal church leaders. The findings may provide useful information about how young members interact with prophetic content outside their local congregations. Such information may assist church leaders in developing appropriate biblical teaching on spiritual discernment, media literacy and responsible engagement with online religious content.
The study will benefit Christian Religious Studies teachers, theological educators and Bible instructors. It may contribute to discussions concerning prophecy, spiritual gifts, biblical interpretation, Pentecostalism and digital religion. The study may also provide material for developing teaching approaches that help young Christians evaluate contemporary religious messages using biblical principles.
The study may further benefit parents and youth ministry leaders who are concerned with the spiritual development of young Christians. By identifying patterns of social media exposure and the ways young people evaluate prophetic messages, the findings may assist parents and youth leaders in providing more informed guidance concerning online religious content.
Finally, the study will contribute to the academic literature on digital religion and Nigerian Pentecostalism. Existing research has established that digital technologies are transforming Pentecostal communication and that Nigerian churches increasingly use online media to reach young people (Omotayo, 2017; Afolabi & Oderinde, 2024). The present study will extend this body of knowledge by concentrating specifically on the relationship between social media prophetic messages, Christian faith and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in Lagos State.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study will focus on the influence of social media prophetic messages on Christian faith and spiritual discernment among Pentecostal youths in selected churches in Lagos State.
The content scope will cover social media prophetic messages, exposure to online prophets, Christian faith, spiritual discernment, biblical evaluation of prophecy, attitudes toward prophetic messages, and the relationship between online prophetic communication and the spiritual lives of Pentecostal youths.
The population scope will consist of Pentecostal youths who are members or regular participants in the selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State.
The geographical scope will be limited to selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State. The findings will therefore be interpreted within the context of the selected churches and respondents and will not automatically be generalized to every Pentecostal youth or every Pentecostal church in Nigeria.
The study will focus primarily on social media platforms through which prophetic messages are commonly circulated, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp, depending on the platforms identified among the respondents during the research.
