INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Marriage remains a central institution in human society, serving as a foundation for family formation, social stability, and cultural continuity. In Nigeria, marriage is not only a union between individuals but also a social contract involving families, kinship networks, and cultural expectations. Traditionally, marriages were largely endogamous, with individuals encouraged or required to marry within their ethnic group in order to preserve cultural identity, language, and social cohesion (Murdock, 1949).

However, the dynamics of marriage in Nigeria have undergone significant transformation due to modernization, urbanization, education, and increased social mobility. Inter-tribal or inter-ethnic marriages have become increasingly common, particularly in urban and cosmopolitan settings such as Ibadan. Institutions of higher learning, especially University of Ibadan, provide a conducive environment for social interaction among individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds, thereby increasing the likelihood of mixed-ethnic relationships and marriages.

Inter-tribal marriage involves a union between individuals from different ethnic groups, each with distinct cultural practices, belief systems, languages, and family structures. In Nigeria, major ethnic groups such as Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa possess unique marital traditions, including rites of passage, bride price negotiations, and expectations regarding gender roles and family responsibilities (Afigbo, 1981). When individuals from different ethnic backgrounds marry, they are often required to navigate and reconcile these differences in order to build a stable and harmonious family.

One of the most significant aspects of inter-tribal marriage is the role of family expectations. In many Nigerian cultures, marriage is not solely an individual decision but a collective family affair. Families often have expectations regarding acceptable partners, cultural compatibility, religious affiliation, and adherence to traditional values. In inter-tribal marriages, these expectations may conflict, leading to tension between spouses and their respective families. For instance, issues such as traditional wedding rites, naming of children, inheritance practices, and residence patterns may become sources of disagreement.

Family expectations can exert considerable influence on marital stability. In some cases, lack of family support may create emotional strain on couples, while excessive interference from in-laws may lead to conflicts and misunderstandings. The pressure to conform to multiple cultural expectations can also place a burden on couples, particularly when there is no clear framework for integrating diverse traditions.

Furthermore, divorce trends in Nigeria have shown noticeable changes in recent years. While divorce was traditionally discouraged and stigmatized, increasing awareness of individual rights, economic independence, and changing social norms have contributed to a gradual rise in divorce rates (Amato, 2000). Inter-tribal marriages may be particularly vulnerable to marital instability due to cultural differences, communication barriers, and conflicting family expectations.

Within the University of Ibadan community, which comprises students, academic staff, and non-academic staff from various ethnic backgrounds, mixed-ethnic marriages are increasingly common. This unique environment provides an opportunity to study how inter-tribal couples navigate family expectations and how these dynamics influence marital stability and divorce trends.

Despite the growing prevalence of inter-tribal marriages, there is limited empirical research focusing specifically on the interplay between cultural differences, family expectations, and divorce trends within academic communities in Nigeria. Most studies have examined inter-ethnic marriages in broader contexts without addressing the unique characteristics of university communities.

This study, therefore, seeks to examine inter-tribal marriage, family expectations, and divorce trends among mixed-ethnic couples in the University of Ibadan community, Oyo State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increasing prevalence of inter-tribal marriages in Nigeria reflects broader social changes associated with modernization and cultural interaction. However, despite their potential to promote national unity and cultural integration, these marriages often face significant challenges that may affect their stability.

One of the major problems associated with inter-tribal marriages is the conflict arising from differing cultural values and practices. Couples from different ethnic backgrounds may have divergent views on important aspects of family life, including gender roles, child upbringing, religious practices, and conflict resolution. These differences, if not effectively managed, can lead to misunderstandings and marital discord.

Another critical issue is the role of family expectations and interference. In the Nigerian context, families often play a dominant role in marital affairs, and their expectations can exert pressure on couples. In inter-tribal marriages, families may resist the union due to cultural prejudice or concerns about compatibility. Even after marriage, in-laws may impose their cultural norms, leading to tension and conflict within the household.

Additionally, the lack of cultural adaptability and effective communication between spouses can exacerbate marital challenges. Language barriers and differences in communication styles may hinder mutual understanding and conflict resolution, thereby increasing the likelihood of marital breakdown.

Divorce trends among inter-tribal couples also present a significant concern. While divorce is becoming more socially acceptable, it remains a sensitive issue with social, emotional, and economic consequences. Inter-tribal marriages may experience higher risks of divorce due to the compounded effects of cultural differences and family pressures.

Moreover, there is a scarcity of empirical studies that specifically examine inter-tribal marriages within the University of Ibadan community. Existing literature often overlooks the unique socio-cultural environment of academic institutions, where individuals from diverse backgrounds interact closely. This gap in knowledge limits understanding of how family expectations and cultural differences influence marital outcomes in such settings.

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the limited understanding of how inter-tribal marriages in the University of Ibadan community are influenced by family expectations and how these factors contribute to divorce trends among mixed-ethnic couples.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the major cultural differences experienced by mixed-ethnic couples in the University of Ibadan community?

2. How do family expectations influence inter-tribal marriages in the study area?

3. What factors contribute to divorce trends among mixed-ethnic couples?

4. How do couples manage cultural differences and family pressures in their marriages?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine inter-tribal marriage, family expectations, and divorce trends among mixed-ethnic couples in the University of Ibadan community.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify cultural differences among mixed-ethnic couples.

2. Examine the influence of family expectations on marital stability.

3. Analyze factors contributing to divorce trends.

4. Explore coping strategies used by couples to manage cultural and family pressures.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between family expectations and divorce trends among mixed-ethnic couples in the University of Ibadan community.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between family expectations and divorce trends among mixed-ethnic couples in the University of Ibadan community.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in the following ways:

• It contributes to academic literature on inter-tribal marriage and family sociology in Nigeria.

• It provides insights for couples on managing cultural differences and family expectations.

• It assists counselors and social workers in addressing marital conflicts in mixed-ethnic marriages.

• It informs policymakers on promoting social cohesion and reducing marital instability.

1.7 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on mixed-ethnic couples within the University of Ibadan community in Oyo State. It examines the relationship between inter-tribal marriage, family expectations, and divorce trends.

The study is limited to the University of Ibadan environment and does not cover other institutions or regions. Time and resource constraints also limit the scope of the research.
