INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Peaceful coexistence among people of different religious backgrounds remains one of the major foundations for sustainable development, social stability, and national integration. In pluralistic societies where religious diversity is significant, interfaith dialogue has increasingly emerged as a practical strategy for preventing violent conflicts, promoting mutual understanding, and strengthening community resilience. Interfaith dialogue refers to a structured and continuous process of communication and cooperation among adherents of different religious traditions with the aim of fostering respect, reducing prejudice, resolving misunderstandings, and promoting peaceful coexistence (Abu-Nimer, 2001; Appleby, 2000). Unlike debates that seek to establish religious superiority, interfaith dialogue encourages collaboration on shared human values such as justice, peace, compassion, reconciliation, and mutual respect.

Globally, religious diversity has become both a source of social enrichment and, in some contexts, a trigger for violent conflict when manipulated for political, ethnic, or economic interests. Although religion itself does not inherently generate violence, differences in religious identity are often exploited by political elites, ethnic entrepreneurs, and extremist groups to mobilize communities for conflict (Haynes, 2020). Consequently, international organizations such as the United Nations and UNESCO have consistently emphasized dialogue among civilizations and religions as an essential mechanism for achieving sustainable peace and preventing violent extremism (United Nations, 2015).

Community peacebuilding has similarly gained prominence as an approach that focuses on addressing the root causes of violent conflicts rather than merely responding to their consequences. Lederach (1997) conceptualizes peacebuilding as a long-term process involving relationship transformation, reconciliation, trust-building, institutional reforms, and inclusive participation by all stakeholders. Community peacebuilding recognizes that sustainable peace cannot be imposed externally but must be built through local ownership, continuous dialogue, social justice, and collaborative problem-solving among community members. Religious institutions, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, women, and youth all constitute critical actors in community peacebuilding initiatives.

In many countries characterized by religious pluralism, interfaith dialogue has demonstrated considerable success in reducing tensions and promoting social cohesion. In Indonesia, interfaith forums have facilitated collaboration between Muslim and Christian communities in addressing communal conflicts. Similarly, in Rwanda, faith-based reconciliation programmes significantly contributed to rebuilding trust following the 1994 genocide. Northern Ireland equally presents evidence that sustained dialogue among religious groups can complement political agreements in promoting lasting peace (Appleby, 2000). These experiences illustrate that dialogue creates opportunities for correcting stereotypes, promoting empathy, and fostering collaborative responses to shared community challenges.

Within Africa, religion occupies a central place in both public and private life. Religious leaders often command significant moral authority and influence public opinion, making them indispensable actors in peacebuilding efforts. However, religious identity has also intersected with ethnic competition, political exclusion, resource struggles, and historical grievances to produce recurring conflicts in several African countries including Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Central African Republic. Scholars have observed that many of these conflicts are multidimensional, with religion serving as an identity marker rather than the sole cause of violence (Galtung, 1996; Haynes, 2020).

Nigeria represents one of Africa’s most religiously diverse nations, with Christianity and Islam constituting the two dominant faiths alongside African Traditional Religion. This religious diversity has enriched Nigeria’s cultural landscape but has also created opportunities for identity-based conflicts, particularly where political, economic, and ethnic interests intersect with religious affiliations. Since the country’s return to democratic governance in 1999, several communities have experienced recurrent ethno-religious violence resulting in loss of lives, destruction of property, displacement of populations, and deep social polarization (Kukah, 2011).

Among Nigeria’s conflict-prone areas, Plateau State occupies a unique position because of its long history of recurring communal and religious violence. Jos, the state capital, has experienced repeated episodes of violent conflict involving Christian and Muslim communities since 2001. While these conflicts are frequently described as religious, several studies argue that they are driven by complex interactions involving indigene-settler disputes, political competition, economic marginalization, land ownership, and identity politics (Best, 2007; Ostien, 2009). Religion nevertheless remains a powerful mobilizing factor that shapes perceptions, group identity, and patterns of social interaction.

Jos North Local Government Area has consistently been identified as one of the epicentres of these recurring conflicts. The area has witnessed violent outbreaks in 2001, 2004, 2008, 2010, and subsequent periods of localized violence that have left lasting psychological, economic, and social consequences on residents. These conflicts have weakened social trust, disrupted economic activities, displaced thousands of residents, destroyed places of worship, and reinforced segregation between Christian and Muslim communities. Recent scholarship continues to identify indigene-settler divisions, identity politics, and weak social cohesion as major drivers of conflict while recommending intergroup dialogue and inclusive peacebuilding approaches as sustainable solutions.

The persistent nature of these conflicts has attracted the attention of government agencies, non-governmental organizations, international development partners, and faith-based organizations. Several peacebuilding initiatives have consequently been introduced in Plateau State, including peace committees, mediation programmes, youth engagement projects, trauma healing interventions, and interfaith dialogue platforms. Organizations such as the Interfaith Mediation Centre (IMC), Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA), Mercy Corps, and numerous local faith-based organizations have facilitated dialogue sessions involving religious leaders, women, youth, and traditional rulers to rebuild trust and strengthen peaceful coexistence. Research conducted by Mercy Corps found that religious leaders possess considerable influence in changing attitudes, rebuilding trust, and encouraging peaceful interactions between conflicting communities.

Interfaith dialogue has increasingly become a strategic mechanism for addressing stereotypes, correcting misinformation, promoting forgiveness, and encouraging collaborative community development. Through regular meetings, joint community projects, conflict mediation, and religious tolerance campaigns, dialogue initiatives seek to transform relationships between Christian and Muslim communities from suspicion and hostility toward cooperation and mutual respect. These engagements recognize that sustainable peace extends beyond the absence of violence to include social justice, inclusive governance, community participation, and positive intergroup relationships.

Despite these interventions, evidence suggests that peacebuilding outcomes remain uneven across different communities within Jos North. While some neighbourhoods have experienced improvements in intergroup cooperation and reduced hostility, others continue to experience distrust, segregation, hate speech, and periodic outbreaks of violence. The persistence of these challenges raises important questions regarding the effectiveness of existing interfaith dialogue initiatives in achieving long-term community peacebuilding.

Furthermore, emerging studies emphasize that successful peacebuilding requires inclusive participation involving religious leaders, women, youth organizations, traditional institutions, security agencies, educational institutions, and civil society organizations. Dialogue must also address structural issues such as social exclusion, unemployment, political marginalization, and unequal access to resources if lasting peace is to be achieved.

Given the strategic importance of Jos North as one of Nigeria’s most conflict-affected communities, understanding the contribution of interfaith dialogue to community peacebuilding has become both academically and practically significant. This study therefore seeks to examine the relationship between interfaith dialogue and community peacebuilding in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State with a view to generating empirical evidence that can strengthen future peacebuilding policies and interventions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite numerous government interventions, peace accords, security operations, and community-based peace initiatives, Jos North Local Government Area continues to experience periodic outbreaks of violent conflict. Although the intensity of violence has reduced in some periods, underlying tensions among religious and ethnic groups remain evident. Episodes of communal violence have resulted in deaths, displacement of residents, destruction of homes, places of worship, businesses, schools, and public infrastructure, thereby undermining sustainable development and social cohesion.

One of the major strategies consistently adopted to address these conflicts has been interfaith dialogue involving Christian and Muslim religious leaders, traditional rulers, women groups, youth organizations, civil society organizations, and government agencies. These dialogue platforms are intended to promote mutual understanding, rebuild trust, encourage reconciliation, reduce stereotypes, and strengthen peaceful coexistence. Several organizations have invested substantial financial and human resources in organizing peace meetings, workshops, mediation programmes, and community reconciliation activities across Jos North.

However, despite the proliferation of these dialogue initiatives, recurring tensions continue to threaten community stability. Reports indicate that many communities remain socially divided along religious lines, with limited interaction between members of different faiths, persistent distrust, hate narratives, and residential segregation. The continued occurrence of violent incidents suggests that existing peacebuilding efforts may not have fully addressed the structural and relational dimensions of conflict.

Previous studies on Plateau State have largely concentrated on the causes of ethno-religious conflicts, political exclusion, citizenship rights, farmer-herder conflicts, and security responses. Other studies have examined dialogue processes or general peacebuilding mechanisms without providing sufficient empirical attention to how interfaith dialogue specifically contributes to sustainable community peacebuilding at the grassroots level in Jos North Local Government Area.

Additionally, many existing studies rely predominantly on secondary data or qualitative narratives, leaving limited quantitative evidence regarding residents’ perceptions of the effectiveness of interfaith dialogue in promoting trust, reconciliation, cooperation, conflict prevention, and peaceful coexistence within conflict-prone communities. This methodological gap creates the need for a descriptive survey that captures the experiences and perceptions of community members directly affected by recurring conflicts.

There is therefore a contextual gap, as contemporary realities in Jos North continue to evolve with changing demographic patterns, emerging security challenges, youth participation, and renewed peacebuilding initiatives. There is also a practical gap because policymakers, religious organizations, development agencies, and community leaders require current empirical evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of dialogue-based peace interventions and identify areas requiring improvement.

It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the influence of interfaith dialogue on community peacebuilding in conflict-prone communities, using Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State as the study area.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the influence of interfaith dialogue on community peacebuilding in conflict-prone communities in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the influence of interfaith dialogue on peaceful coexistence in Jos North Local Government Area.
2. determine the effect of interfaith dialogue on trust-building among members of different religious communities.
3. assess the contribution of interfaith dialogue to conflict prevention and resolution in Jos North.
4. examine the challenges affecting the effectiveness of interfaith dialogue in promoting community peacebuilding.

1.5 Research Questions

1. How does interfaith dialogue influence peaceful coexistence in Jos North Local Government Area?
2. To what extent does interfaith dialogue promote trust among different religious communities?
3. What contribution does interfaith dialogue make toward conflict prevention and resolution?
4. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of interfaith dialogue in promoting community peacebuilding?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Interfaith dialogue has no significant influence on community peacebuilding in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will benefit religious leaders, policymakers, community leaders, peacebuilding agencies, non-governmental organizations, security agencies, researchers, and educational institutions. It will provide empirical evidence for strengthening interfaith dialogue initiatives, improving policy formulation, enhancing conflict prevention strategies, and promoting sustainable peace within conflict-prone communities.

1.8 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on interfaith dialogue and community peacebuilding in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The independent variable is interfaith dialogue, while the dependent variable is community peacebuilding, measured through peaceful coexistence, trust-building, conflict prevention, and reconciliation.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

Interfaith Dialogue: A structured process of communication, interaction, and cooperation between adherents of different religious faiths aimed at promoting understanding, respect, and peaceful coexistence.

Community Peacebuilding: Community-based activities and processes that promote reconciliation, trust, conflict prevention, social cohesion, and sustainable peace.

Conflict-Prone Communities: Communities with a history of recurring violent conflicts arising from religious, ethnic, political, or socio-economic differences.

Peaceful Coexistence: The ability of people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds to live together harmoniously with mutual respect and tolerance.

Trust-Building: The process of developing confidence, cooperation, and positive relationships among members of different communities.

Jos North Local Government Area: One of the seventeen Local Government Areas in Plateau State, Nigeria, characterized by religious diversity and a history of recurring communal conflicts.
