INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Marriage is a sacred institution ordained by God and upheld as a moral and spiritual foundation for human society. In the Christian tradition, marriage is not only a social contract but also a covenant relationship that reflects the union between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:25–27). For church leaders, particularly clergy in pastoral ministry, marriage carries additional significance because their personal lives are often viewed as a model for the congregation. Biblical standards such as those found in 1 Timothy 3:2 and Titus 1:6 emphasize that a church leader should be “the husband of one wife,” highlighting the importance of marital integrity in leadership.

In many Christian denominations, especially mainline churches, the marital status of clergy plays a critical role in determining their credibility, moral authority, and acceptance within the congregation. Mainline churches such as the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Methodist Church Nigeria, Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Baptist Convention Nigeria, and Evangelical Church Winning All uphold doctrinal teachings that stress moral discipline and exemplary family life among clergy. Within these traditions, marriage is often regarded as a prerequisite for effective pastoral leadership, while remarriage—especially following divorce—may be viewed with varying degrees of acceptance or skepticism.

Leadership credibility in the church refers to the degree to which a pastor or clergy member is perceived as trustworthy, morally upright, spiritually mature, and capable of guiding the congregation. Credibility is essential for effective ministry because it influences members’ willingness to accept teachings, follow leadership, and remain committed to the church. When a pastor’s marital life aligns with doctrinal expectations, it can enhance credibility; however, deviations such as divorce or remarriage may raise questions about moral consistency and spiritual authority (Adedibu, 2012).

Remarriage among clergy is a complex and sensitive issue in Christian ministry. While some denominations permit remarriage under certain conditions—such as the death of a spouse—others place strict limitations on remarriage after divorce. In contemporary society, changing social norms, increasing divorce rates, and evolving theological interpretations have contributed to a growing number of remarried clergy. This development has generated debates within the church regarding the balance between grace, forgiveness, and adherence to scriptural standards (Okonkwo, 2015).

In the context of Lagos State, a cosmopolitan and religiously vibrant environment, mainline churches are confronted with diverse perspectives on marriage and remarriage. Congregants in urban settings are often more exposed to modern views on relationships, which may influence their perceptions of clergy marital status. At the same time, traditional Christian values remain deeply rooted, creating potential tensions between doctrinal expectations and contemporary realities.

Church growth, defined as the increase in the number of members, spiritual development, and organizational expansion, is influenced by multiple factors, including leadership effectiveness, doctrinal soundness, and community engagement. The credibility of church leaders plays a significant role in attracting and retaining members. When leaders are perceived as credible, congregants are more likely to trust their guidance and remain committed to the church. Conversely, controversies surrounding a pastor’s marital life may lead to reduced confidence, decreased attendance, and even membership decline.

Despite the importance of this issue, there is limited empirical research examining how marriage and remarriage among clergy affect leadership credibility and church growth, particularly within mainline churches in Lagos State. Most studies have focused on general leadership qualities or church growth strategies without adequately addressing the influence of clergy marital status.

Therefore, this study seeks to assess the effect of marriage and remarriage on leadership credibility and its subsequent impact on church growth in five selected mainline churches in Lagos State. By exploring this relationship, the study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between personal life, leadership perception, and organizational development within the church.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In recent years, issues surrounding marriage, divorce, and remarriage among clergy have become increasingly prominent within Christian communities. While the church upholds high moral standards for its leaders, societal changes have led to a growing number of cases where clergy experience marital challenges, including separation, divorce, and remarriage. These developments have raised critical questions about leadership credibility and their implications for church growth.

In mainline churches in Lagos State, the expectation that clergy should exemplify stable and exemplary marital lives remains strong. However, when a pastor undergoes divorce or enters into remarriage, it often generates mixed reactions among congregants. Some members may view remarriage as a legitimate expression of grace and restoration, while others may perceive it as a violation of biblical principles. This divergence in perception can create tension within the church and affect unity.

One major problem is the potential erosion of leadership credibility. Clergy are expected to serve as moral and spiritual role models, and any perceived inconsistency between their personal lives and scriptural teachings may lead to diminished trust. When credibility is compromised, it can affect the pastor’s ability to lead effectively, preach convincingly, and maintain authority within the congregation.

Another issue is the impact on church growth. Leadership controversies related to marriage and remarriage can lead to decreased attendance, reduced financial contributions, and even the departure of members to other congregations. In some cases, such controversies may hinder evangelism efforts and damage the public image of the church.

Furthermore, there is a lack of clear and consistent policies across denominations regarding remarriage among clergy. While some churches adopt a more flexible approach, others maintain strict prohibitions, leading to inconsistencies in practice and confusion among members. This lack of uniformity complicates the issue and makes it difficult to address effectively.

Additionally, the emotional and psychological impact on congregants should not be overlooked. Members who look up to their pastors as role models may experience disappointment, confusion, or spiritual doubt when faced with issues of marital instability among clergy. This can weaken their commitment to the church and affect their spiritual growth.

Despite these challenges, there is limited empirical evidence on how marriage and remarriage among clergy influence leadership credibility and church growth in Lagos State. Most discussions on this topic remain theological or anecdotal, lacking systematic investigation.

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the insufficient understanding of how marriage and remarriage among clergy affect leadership credibility and church growth in mainline churches in Lagos State. This study aims to fill this gap by providing empirical insights into the issue and offering recommendations for church leadership and policy formulation.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How does marriage influence leadership credibility in mainline churches?

2. What is the effect of remarriage on the credibility of church leaders?

3. How does leadership credibility impact church growth?

4. What challenges do churches face regarding clergy remarriage?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to assess the impact of marriage and remarriage on leadership credibility and church growth.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the influence of marriage on leadership credibility in the church.

2. Assess the effect of remarriage on the credibility of clergy.

3. Evaluate the relationship between leadership credibility and church growth.

4. Identify challenges associated with clergy remarriage in mainline churches.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Marriage and remarriage have no significant effect on leadership credibility and church growth in selected mainline churches in Lagos State.

H₁: Marriage and remarriage have a significant effect on leadership credibility and church growth in selected mainline churches in Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in the following ways:

• Church Leadership: It will help clergy understand how their marital status influences their credibility and ministry effectiveness.
