CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education remains one of the most powerful instruments for individual empowerment and national development. It equips learners with knowledge, skills, values, and competencies necessary for personal growth and societal advancement. One of the key determinants of students’ success in education is parental involvement. Parental involvement refers to the extent to which parents actively participate in their children’s academic activities, including monitoring school work, attending school meetings, assisting with homework, and maintaining communication with teachers (Epstein, 2018).

In recent educational research, parental involvement has been identified as a critical factor influencing students’ academic achievement across different levels of education. When parents show interest in their children’s education, students tend to develop higher motivation, better study habits, and improved academic performance. Conversely, lack of parental involvement often results in poor academic performance, low motivation, truancy, and behavioural problems among students (Jeynes, 2020).

Parental involvement operates through several dimensions, including home-based involvement (such as helping with homework), school-based involvement (such as attending school events), and academic socialization (such as setting educational expectations and discussing future goals). These forms of involvement create a supportive learning environment that enhances students’ academic engagement and achievement (Hill & Tyson, 2019).

In developing countries like Nigeria, the role of parents in education is particularly important due to challenges such as inadequate school funding, limited teaching resources, and large class sizes. In such contexts, parental support becomes a crucial compensatory factor that can enhance students’ academic outcomes. However, many parents face constraints such as economic pressure, low educational attainment, and time limitations, which may reduce their level of involvement in their children’s education (UNICEF, 2023).

In Nsukka Education Zone, there have been concerns about inconsistent academic performance among secondary school students. Educational stakeholders have observed that while some students perform excellently, others continue to perform poorly despite similar school conditions. This variation has been partly attributed to differences in parental involvement in students’ education.

Furthermore, studies have shown that students whose parents are actively involved in their education tend to perform better in examinations, exhibit positive behaviour, and demonstrate higher levels of academic confidence. This suggests that parental involvement plays a significant role not only in academic achievement but also in shaping students’ attitudes toward learning (Steinberg, 2021).

Given the importance of education for national development and the persistent variation in academic achievement among secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone, it becomes necessary to examine how parental involvement influences students’ academic achievement. This study therefore seeks to investigate parental involvement as a determinant of academic achievement among secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of education and the efforts of government and schools to improve academic standards in Nigeria, there has been a persistent concern about the poor academic performance of some secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone. While some students consistently perform well in internal and external examinations, others continue to record low academic achievement.

One major concern is the apparent lack of adequate parental involvement in students’ academic activities. Many parents appear to have limited engagement in their children’s schooling, rarely attending school meetings, monitoring homework, or providing academic support at home. This lack of involvement may negatively affect students’ motivation, discipline, and academic performance.

Although schools continue to implement various strategies to improve students’ achievement, such as improved teaching methods and assessment techniques, the role of the home environment—particularly parental involvement—has not been sufficiently addressed. This creates a gap in understanding the extent to which parental involvement influences academic achievement among secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone.

If this issue is not properly addressed, the continued poor academic performance of students may lead to low transition rates to higher education, reduced employability, and poor human capital development in the region. Therefore, it becomes necessary to examine parental involvement as a determinant of academic achievement among secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine parental involvement as a determinant of academic achievement among secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Determine the relationship between parental monitoring and students’ academic achievement.
2. Examine the relationship between parental academic support and students’ academic achievement.
3. Investigate the relationship between parental communication and students’ academic achievement.
4. Determine the relationship between parental school involvement and students’ academic achievement.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guide the study:

1. What is the relationship between parental monitoring and students’ academic achievement?
2. What is the relationship between parental academic support and students’ academic achievement?
3. What is the relationship between parental communication and students’ academic achievement?
4. What is the relationship between parental school involvement and students’ academic achievement?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Parental involvement does not significantly influence academic achievement among secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone.
H₁: Parental involvement significantly influences academic achievement among secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to students, parents, teachers, school administrators, policymakers, and researchers.

Students will benefit by understanding how parental involvement contributes to improved academic performance. Parents will gain insight into the importance of active participation in their children’s education.

Teachers will better understand how home support influences classroom performance and will strengthen collaboration with parents. School administrators and policymakers will use the findings to design policies and programmes that encourage greater parental involvement in education.

Researchers will also benefit from the study as it will provide empirical literature for future studies on parental involvement and academic achievement.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to secondary school students in Nsukka Education Zone. It focuses on parental involvement (monitoring, academic support, communication, and school participation) as the independent variable and academic achievement as the dependent variable. The study does not cover private schools or other education zones.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Parental Involvement: The active participation of parents in their children’s educational activities both at home and in school.

Academic Achievement: The level of success attained by students in school subjects as reflected in examination scores and academic performance.

Parental Monitoring: The extent to which parents supervise and track their children’s academic activities and behaviour.

Parental Academic Support: Assistance provided by parents to help children with homework, studies, and learning activities.

Parental Communication: The exchange of information between parents and children regarding school activities and academic progress.

Secondary School Students: Learners enrolled in Junior and Senior Secondary Schools (JSS1–SSS3).

Nsukka Education Zone: An educational administrative area in Enugu State, Nigeria comprising several secondary schools under the state education board.
