INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is widely recognized as a critical factor in the cognitive, social, and emotional development of children. For children with learning difficulties—such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other specific learning disorders—parental support plays a pivotal role in enhancing learning outcomes and fostering academic success. Learning difficulties often impede the acquisition of foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and comprehension, which can affect a child’s overall educational trajectory.

Parental support encompasses various forms of involvement, including active participation in school activities, supervision of homework, provision of learning materials, encouragement, and emotional support. Research indicates that children with learning difficulties benefit significantly when parents actively engage in their education. Such support enhances motivation, builds self-confidence, and fosters positive attitudes toward learning. Conversely, lack of parental involvement may exacerbate learning challenges, increase frustration, and result in poor academic performance.

In Nigeria, especially in urban centers like Port Harcourt, River State, schools often accommodate children with diverse learning needs within mainstream classrooms. Teachers, while providing instructional support, frequently depend on parents to reinforce learning at home. However, socioeconomic factors, parental education levels, occupational commitments, and limited awareness about learning difficulties often hinder meaningful parental engagement. These challenges can compromise the learning outcomes of children with learning difficulties, limiting their potential for academic success.

Given the importance of parental involvement, it is essential to examine how parental support influences the learning outcomes of children with learning difficulties in selected schools in Port Harcourt. This study aims to provide empirical evidence on the role of parental support, thereby informing school policies, teaching strategies, and parent-focused interventions to improve the academic performance of children facing learning challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of parental support in the education of children with learning difficulties, many children in Port Harcourt struggle to achieve satisfactory learning outcomes. Teachers report that limited parental engagement, inconsistent supervision of learning at home, and inadequate provision of learning resources contribute to poor academic performance among this group.

While some studies have explored parental involvement in general education, there is limited empirical research specifically addressing the influence of parental support on children with learning difficulties in Port Harcourt. Factors such as parental education, socioeconomic status, employment commitments, and lack of awareness about learning difficulties often affect the level and quality of support provided. The absence of targeted research makes it challenging for educators and policymakers to design effective strategies that enhance parental involvement and optimize learning outcomes for children with learning difficulties.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of parental support on the learning outcomes of children with learning difficulties in selected schools in Port Harcourt, River State, with the aim of providing practical recommendations for improving academic performance and holistic development.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of parental support on the learning outcomes of children with learning difficulties in selected schools in Port Harcourt, River State.

Specifically, the study aims to:

1. Identify the types of parental support provided to children with learning difficulties in selected schools.

2. Determine the relationship between parental support and academic performance of children with learning difficulties.

3. Examine the effect of parental support on the motivation and engagement of children with learning difficulties.

4. Investigate challenges faced by parents in providing support to children with learning difficulties.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Parental support has no significant influence on the learning outcomes of children with learning difficulties in selected schools in Port Harcourt, River State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will benefit:

• Parents: By providing insights into effective ways of supporting children with learning difficulties to improve their academic performance and engagement.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to selected public and private schools in Port Harcourt, River State. It focuses on parental support as the independent variable and the learning outcomes of children with learning difficulties as the dependent variable. The study involves parents, teachers, and children with learning difficulties as respondents.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Parental Support: Involvement of parents in their children’s education, including supervision, provision of learning resources, encouragement, and participation in school activities.

• Children with Learning Difficulties: Learners who experience specific challenges in acquiring literacy, numeracy, or other academic skills due to cognitive, emotional, or processing difficulties.

• Learning Outcomes: Academic performance, engagement, motivation, and skill acquisition of children in school subjects.

• Influence: The effect or impact of parental support on children’s learning outcomes.
