CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage is one of the fundamental social institutions through which individuals establish companionship, intimacy, family relationships and mutual responsibilities. Within the Christian tradition, marriage is viewed not merely as a social arrangement but as a covenantal relationship characterized by love, commitment, fidelity, mutual respect, sacrifice and shared spiritual responsibility. Despite these ideals, marital relationships are not free from disagreements because couples often differ in personality, expectations, values, communication patterns, financial priorities and approaches to family responsibilities. Marital conflict therefore constitutes an important aspect of relationship dynamics, particularly when disagreements become frequent, intense or poorly managed. Bradbury, Fincham and Beach (2000) observed that marital quality is strongly connected with patterns of interaction between spouses, while Fincham and Beach (2010) noted that conflict and relationship processes are central issues in understanding marital stability and satisfaction. Consequently, the existence of conflict does not necessarily imply that a marriage must fail; rather, the manner in which couples communicate, negotiate differences and seek assistance can determine whether conflict becomes constructive or destructive.

Marital conflict can arise from several interconnected issues, including poor communication, financial difficulties, sexual incompatibility, infidelity, lack of trust, parenting responsibilities, interference from extended family members, differences in expectations and disagreements concerning household responsibilities. In some circumstances, relatively minor disagreements can become persistent when couples lack effective communication and problem-solving skills. Research has shown that negative interaction patterns, criticism, defensiveness, withdrawal and ineffective conflict management can contribute to declining marital satisfaction and relationship instability. Gottman and Levenson (2000) identified destructive patterns of marital interaction as important indicators of relationship deterioration, while Lavner, Karney and Bradbury (2016) demonstrated that communication and relationship quality are closely connected over the course of marriage. In the Nigerian context, Ibeh, Obidoa and Uzoechina (2013) identified financial difficulties, lack of trust, sexual problems, communication gaps and infidelity among factors associated with marital disharmony among couples in Enugu State. These findings demonstrate that marital conflict is multidimensional and requires interventions that address both the immediate disagreement and the underlying relational problems.

Pastoral counselling has emerged as an important avenue through which Christian couples can obtain assistance when they experience marital difficulties. Pastoral counselling involves the provision of guidance, emotional support, spiritual care and counselling within a Christian pastoral context. Unlike approaches that focus exclusively on religious instruction, effective pastoral counselling can incorporate communication, problem-solving, emotional support, forgiveness, reconciliation and other appropriate counselling principles while remaining sensitive to Christian beliefs and values. In churches, pastors and other pastoral caregivers are often among the first persons approached by couples experiencing marital difficulties because of the trust and spiritual authority associated with their roles. Biwul (2023) argues that post-marital counselling deserves greater attention within Christian pastoral care because couples may experience serious challenges after marriage despite having received premarital preparation. Similarly, Adetunji and Kila (2024) emphasized the continued relevance of marriage counselling within churches and identified issues such as economic pressure, family influence, lack of sustained love and infidelity as factors that can contribute to marital problems. Pastoral counselling can therefore provide an important support mechanism through which Christian couples are assisted to understand their conflicts and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

The importance of counselling for marital stability is also supported by empirical research on couples’ conflict resolution. Marital counselling can provide couples with opportunities to communicate their concerns, identify the sources of disagreement, examine unhelpful patterns and develop more constructive approaches to resolving problems. In a Nigerian study, marital counselling was found to have a significant effect on couples’ conflict resolution, suggesting that structured counselling can contribute to improved management of marital disagreements. Counselling interventions may be particularly valuable when they encourage patience, tolerance, accommodation, active listening and constructive communication between spouses (Nwosu & Onwu, 2020). Similarly, Nwangwu, Egbo, Odunze and Asogwa (2024), in their study of counselling strategies for marital stability among married teachers in Enugu State, reported the relevance of behavioural and cognitive-behavioural counselling strategies to marital stability. These findings suggest that counselling can provide couples with practical tools for managing disagreements rather than merely encouraging them to endure marital problems. For Christian couples, pastoral counselling may therefore combine appropriate counselling techniques with spiritual principles such as love, forgiveness, humility, commitment and reconciliation.

The Nigerian social and cultural environment further makes the study of marital conflict management important. Marriage in Nigeria is often connected not only to the husband and wife but also to children, extended family members, religious communities and wider social networks. Consequently, marital disagreements may be influenced by cultural expectations, financial responsibilities, gender roles, family pressures, fertility concerns and relationships with relatives. Ibeh et al. (2013) found that marital disharmony among couples in Enugu State was associated with several interpersonal and socioeconomic factors, demonstrating the need for context-specific approaches to marital counselling. Similarly, Onyela, Adams and Odobo (2024), in a study of Christian couples in Lagos State, identified communication breakdown, cultural differences, financial issues and household responsibilities among factors associated with marital conflicts. Although the social and cultural circumstances of Lagos and Enugu may differ, these findings indicate that Christian couples in Nigeria can experience a broad range of marital difficulties that require appropriate support. Pastoral counselling that understands both Christian teachings and the social realities of Nigerian families may therefore be better positioned to assist couples in addressing marital conflict.

The need for effective pastoral counselling becomes even more important when marital conflicts become persistent or involve complex emotional and behavioural issues. Unresolved conflict may gradually undermine trust, emotional intimacy, companionship and marital satisfaction, and in severe cases may contribute to separation or divorce. However, pastoral caregivers must also recognize that not all marital problems can be adequately managed through spiritual exhortation alone. Issues such as domestic violence, severe psychological distress, substance misuse, persistent abuse or serious mental-health concerns may require professional counselling, medical, psychological, legal or protective intervention. Research on Christian marital relationships in Nigeria has emphasized the importance of post-marital pastoral care in supporting couples and promoting sustainable marriages, while also drawing attention to the serious challenges that can undermine Christian marital relationships (Biwul, 2023). Afunugo (2025) similarly highlights the need to consider theological, psychological, social and cultural dimensions when addressing serious marital difficulties within Christian families. Therefore, effective pastoral counselling requires appropriate skills, confidentiality, ethical awareness and the ability to recognize when referral to specialized services is necessary.

Enugu Metropolis provides a significant setting for examining pastoral counselling and marital conflict management because Christian religious institutions play an important role in the social and family lives of many residents. Existing research in Enugu State has established that marital disharmony and counselling for marital stability are important concerns, but there remains a need for more specific investigation into the role of pastoral counselling within Pentecostal church settings. The rapid growth and influence of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria have increased the pastoral responsibilities of church leaders, including responsibilities related to marriage preparation, family support, conflict resolution and post-marital care. Biwul (2023) emphasizes that pastoral caregivers have an important role in supporting Christian marriages beyond the wedding ceremony, while Nwangwu et al. (2024) provide evidence of the relevance of counselling strategies to marital stability among married persons in Enugu State. However, there is insufficient localized empirical evidence on how selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis provide pastoral counselling to couples experiencing conflict, the strategies employed by pastoral counsellors, the perceived effectiveness of those strategies and the challenges encountered in the process. It is against this background that this study examines Pastoral Counselling and the Management of Marital Conflicts among Christian Couples: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Enugu Metropolis.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marital conflict is an important concern in family life because persistent and poorly managed disagreements can negatively affect communication, emotional intimacy, trust, companionship and overall marital satisfaction. Although Christian marriage emphasizes love, forgiveness, patience, faithfulness and mutual responsibility, Christian couples are not completely immune from marital disagreements. Evidence from Enugu State indicates that marital disharmony can arise from financial problems, lack of trust, sexual difficulties, communication gaps, infidelity and other interpersonal factors (Ibeh et al., 2013). Research on marital relationships also demonstrates that destructive patterns of interaction can contribute to relationship deterioration when couples repeatedly respond to disagreements through criticism, defensiveness, withdrawal and other ineffective behaviours (Gottman & Levenson, 2000). The existence of these problems creates a significant need for effective interventions that can help couples identify the underlying causes of conflict and develop constructive mechanisms for managing their disagreements.

A second problem concerns the extent to which pastoral counselling is effectively utilized to address marital conflicts among Christian couples. Pastors and church leaders are frequently approached by married couples because they are trusted spiritual authorities and are expected to provide guidance concerning family and marital difficulties. However, the availability of a pastor does not necessarily guarantee the provision of systematic, skilled or effective counselling. Some couples may receive mainly spiritual exhortation without sufficient attention to communication patterns, emotional needs, financial disagreements, behavioural issues or other underlying causes of conflict. Biwul (2023) argues that post-marital counselling has often received inadequate attention in Christian pastoral care despite the challenges that couples may encounter after marriage. Similarly, Nwangwu et al. (2024) found that specific counselling strategies, including behavioural and cognitive-behavioural approaches, have relevance for marital stability. This raises the concern that there is a need to examine the actual counselling approaches used within Pentecostal churches and whether they adequately respond to the marital problems experienced by Christian couples.

A third problem relates to the increasing complexity of marital conflicts and the challenges faced by pastoral counsellors in responding to them. Marital disagreements may involve ordinary communication problems, but they may also involve infidelity, financial stress, sexual difficulties, extended-family interference, emotional abuse, domestic violence and other serious concerns. Such problems require different levels of intervention and cannot always be adequately addressed through generalized biblical advice. Research on Christian marriage in Nigeria indicates that post-marital challenges may threaten marital stability and that pastoral caregivers have an important role in providing continuing support to couples (Biwul, 2023). At the same time, serious cases may require collaboration with professional counsellors, psychologists, social workers, medical professionals or other appropriate services. The problem is therefore not simply whether pastoral counselling is available, but whether pastoral counsellors possess the skills, resources, ethical awareness and referral capacity necessary to manage different categories of marital conflict responsibly and effectively.

A fourth problem is the limited empirical evidence specifically examining pastoral counselling and the management of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis. Previous studies have examined marital disharmony among couples in Enugu State (Ibeh et al., 2013), counselling strategies for marital stability among married persons in Enugu State (Nwangwu et al., 2024), and marital conflict among Christian couples in other Nigerian settings (Onyela et al., 2024). These studies provide useful evidence but do not sufficiently explain how pastoral counselling operates within selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis, the strategies employed by pastoral counsellors, the perceived effectiveness of such interventions and the challenges that may limit their effectiveness. Without adequate context-specific evidence, church leaders may find it difficult to evaluate existing marital counselling practices and identify areas requiring improvement. The present study therefore seeks to investigate pastoral counselling and the management of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The general purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between pastoral counselling and the management of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. identify the major causes of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis;
  2. examine the pastoral counselling strategies used by selected Pentecostal churches to manage marital conflicts among Christian couples;
  3. assess the perceived effectiveness of pastoral counselling in managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in the selected Pentecostal churches; and
  4. examine the challenges encountered by pastors and pastoral counsellors in providing counselling services for Christian couples experiencing marital conflicts.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What are the major causes of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis?
  2. What pastoral counselling strategies are used by selected Pentecostal churches to manage marital conflicts among Christian couples?
  3. To what extent is pastoral counselling perceived to be effective in managing marital conflicts among Christian couples in the selected Pentecostal churches?
  4. What challenges are encountered by pastors and pastoral counsellors in providing counselling services for Christian couples experiencing marital conflicts?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between pastoral counselling and the effective management of marital conflicts among Christian couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to Christian couples because it will provide greater understanding of the role of counselling in addressing marital disagreements. The findings may encourage couples to seek appropriate assistance when conflicts become difficult to manage and may help them appreciate the importance of communication, patience, forgiveness, mutual understanding and constructive problem-solving.

The study will be beneficial to pastors and pastoral counsellors because it will provide information concerning the major sources of marital conflict experienced by Christian couples and the counselling strategies used in addressing such problems. The findings may help pastoral caregivers identify weaknesses in existing counselling practices and develop more systematic approaches to marriage counselling.

The study will also be useful to Pentecostal churches and church leaders. The findings may assist churches in strengthening premarital and post-marital counselling programmes, marriage seminars, couples’ fellowships and family-support ministries. Churches may also use the findings to develop appropriate procedures for referring complicated cases to qualified professional counsellors and other relevant specialists.

The study will be relevant to theological institutions and Christian educators because it may provide empirical material for teaching pastoral care, Christian counselling, marriage ministry and family studies. It may encourage theological training institutions to place greater emphasis on practical counselling competencies that pastors require when dealing with marital and family problems.

The study will be useful to professional counsellors and family therapists because it may provide information about the spiritual and religious context within which many Christian couples understand marriage and conflict. Understanding this context may support more culturally and religiously responsive counselling practices when Christian couples are referred to professional services.

The study will also contribute to existing academic literature in pastoral counselling, Christian education, religious studies, counselling psychology, family studies and conflict management. In particular, the study will provide localized evidence concerning pastoral counselling practices and marital conflict management within selected Pentecostal churches in Enugu Metropolis.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on Pastoral Counselling and the Management of Marital Conflicts among Christian Couples: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Enugu Metropolis.

The content scope covers the major causes of marital conflicts among Christian couples, pastoral counselling strategies, the perceived effectiveness of pastoral counselling and challenges encountered by pastors and pastoral counsellors in providing counselling to couples.

The geographical scope of the study is limited to selected Pentecostal churches located within Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State, Nigeria. The study will not cover all Pentecostal churches in Enugu State because of the large number of churches and the practical limitations associated with studying the entire population.

The population scope will comprise married Christian couples and relevant pastors, ministers or pastoral counsellors involved in marriage counselling within the selected Pentecostal churches. The specific churches, population, sample size and sampling procedure will be presented in Chapter Three.

The study is concerned primarily with pastoral counselling as an approach to managing marital conflicts. It does not seek to evaluate all forms of clinical psychotherapy, psychiatric treatment, legal intervention or professional marriage therapy, although the need for appropriate referral in complex cases may be considered.
