INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture remains an important source of food, employment, income and livelihood for millions of households in Nigeria. Despite the expansion of non-farm economic activities, agricultural production continues to provide a major livelihood base, particularly for households operating small-scale farms. Smallholder farmers are responsible for a substantial proportion of agricultural production and are often directly connected to local food markets. Their welfare is therefore influenced not only by the quantity of crops produced but also by the proportion of harvested output that successfully reaches the market in acceptable quality and generates income. Consequently, improving agricultural productivity without addressing losses after harvest may not translate proportionately into improved household welfare (FAO, 2019; FAO, 2023).
Within the agricultural economy, horticultural crops occupy an important position because they provide food, nutrients, employment and cash income. Vegetables are, however, considerably more vulnerable to post-harvest deterioration than many staple crops because of their high moisture content and physiological activity after harvest. Fresh produce continues to respire after it has been harvested, and high temperature, physical injury, inappropriate handling and microbial contamination can accelerate deterioration. FAO has long identified fruits and vegetables as particularly susceptible to post-harvest losses because they are living plant tissues that continue to undergo physiological changes after harvest (FAO, 1989).
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most economically important vegetable crops in Nigeria. It is consumed widely by households and serves as an important raw material for food processing. Tomato production also generates employment for farmers, farm labourers, transporters, traders, processors and other actors in the agricultural value chain. The economic importance of the crop means that losses occurring between harvesting and final sale represent not merely physical wastage but also the destruction of resources that farmers have already invested in land preparation, seeds, fertilizer, irrigation, pesticides, labour and transportation (Bada et al., 2021; Olayide, Obe, & Obisesan, 2024).
The economic significance of tomato is particularly pronounced in northern Nigeria, where irrigation agriculture has supported large-scale production during periods when rainfall is limited. Kano State is one of the major tomato-producing areas in Nigeria, supported by its semi-arid climate, irrigated agriculture and established agricultural markets. Recent evidence indicates that Kano cultivated more than 45,000 hectares of tomatoes in 2023 and remained one of the country’s principal tomato-producing states. The importance of Kano in tomato production therefore makes the management of post-harvest losses particularly relevant to agricultural development and household livelihoods in the state (Adeoye et al., 2025).
The contribution of Kano to tomato production is also reflected in the structure of its agricultural economy. Tomato farming is undertaken by numerous small-scale producers who operate with relatively limited capital, storage infrastructure and access to improved post-harvest technologies. Recent agricultural productivity evidence indicates that small-scale farmers account for about 98 percent of Nigeria’s tomato cultivation area, emphasizing the importance of understanding the constraints faced by smallholder producers rather than focusing exclusively on large commercial farms (National Agricultural Productivity Survey, 2025).
Tomato production in Kano is not limited to areas far from the urban market. Tomato-producing communities surrounding the Kano metropolitan area participate in supplying fresh tomatoes to urban consumers, retailers, wholesalers, processors and other market actors. The proximity of production areas to large urban markets creates opportunities for commercialization, but it does not automatically eliminate post-harvest losses. Instead, the benefits of market proximity may depend on harvesting practices, packaging, road conditions, transportation arrangements, market timing, storage capacity and the bargaining position of farmers (Bada et al., 2021; Suleiman et al., 2024).
Post-harvest loss refers broadly to the reduction in the quantity or quality of agricultural produce after harvest and before consumption, processing or sale. In the case of tomatoes, losses may occur during harvesting, sorting, grading, packaging, loading, transportation, unloading, storage and marketing. The loss may be physical, where fruits become completely unmarketable, or qualitative, where bruising, cracking, decay, colour deterioration or softening reduces the price that buyers are willing to pay. Thus, even tomatoes that are eventually sold may generate lower income if their quality has deteriorated (FAO, 1989; Esguerra, Rolle, & Rapusas, 2018).
Harvesting is one of the critical stages at which tomato losses can begin. Tomatoes harvested at inappropriate maturity stages or handled roughly are more vulnerable to bruising, cracking and physiological deterioration. The choice of harvesting time can also influence shelf life because temperature and fruit firmness change throughout the day. Appropriate harvesting practices therefore form part of an integrated post-harvest management system rather than being an isolated farm activity (FAO, 1989; Esguerra et al., 2018).
Packaging is another important source of post-harvest loss among tomato farmers. Traditional containers may expose fruits to compression, vibration and physical injury, particularly when large quantities are stacked during transportation. The type and condition of packaging material can therefore determine the degree of mechanical damage sustained by tomatoes before they reach the market. Research conducted among small-scale farmers in Kano previously reported extensive use of traditional baskets and sacks and linked these practices with considerable losses during harvesting and transportation (Olayemi, Adegbola, Bamishaiye, & Daura, 2010).
Transportation presents another major challenge because fresh tomatoes are highly susceptible to mechanical damage. Poor roads, inappropriate loading, excessive stacking, prolonged travel time and inadequate ventilation can cause bruising and crushing. The problem becomes more serious when harvested tomatoes are transported over long distances or under high temperatures. Evidence from Kano indicates that transportation-related losses constitute an important component of total tomato losses and can substantially reduce the economic returns available to producers (Bada et al., 2021; Suleiman et al., 2024).
Storage conditions also influence the extent of post-harvest losses. Unlike durable grains, fresh tomatoes cannot normally be stored for extended periods without appropriate temperature and humidity management. Smallholder farmers who lack suitable storage facilities may be compelled to sell rapidly, even when market prices are unfavourable. During periods of market glut, the absence of appropriate storage and processing facilities can therefore force farmers to accept low prices or allow part of their harvest to deteriorate (FAO, 2019; FAO, 2023).
The problem is intensified by seasonal fluctuations in tomato supply and demand. During peak production periods, large quantities of tomatoes may enter markets within a relatively short period. When supply exceeds immediate market demand, farmers may face declining prices at precisely the time when their produce is most vulnerable to deterioration. In such circumstances, farmers can experience a double economic disadvantage: a reduction in the quantity available for sale and a reduction in the price of the portion that remains marketable (Bada et al., 2021; Olayide et al., 2024).
Post-harvest losses are therefore closely connected with household income. For a smallholder farmer, income from tomato production depends on the quantity successfully marketed, the quality of the produce, the price received and the costs incurred during production and marketing. When part of the harvest is lost, the farmer loses the potential revenue associated with that produce even though the costs of producing it have already been incurred. Post-harvest losses can consequently reduce gross revenue, gross margin and ultimately household disposable income (Bada et al., 2021).
Empirical evidence from Kano State provides strong support for this economic relationship. Bada et al. (2021), in their study of tomato production and marketing in Kura, Tofa and Wudil Local Government Areas of Kano State, found that the average post-harvest loss index at the producer level was about 20.2 percent. More importantly, their analysis showed that the gross margin of tomato production was substantially lower after accounting for post-harvest losses. The study estimated a 53.8 percent reduction in gross margin associated with post-harvest losses, demonstrating the economic importance of reducing losses at the farm level.
The findings of Bada et al. (2021) are consistent with subsequent research conducted in Kano. Bada et al. (2023) examined post-harvest losses and poverty among vegetable-farming households in Kano State and reported a mean value of tomato losses of approximately ₦120,905 per hectare. The study further indicated that post-harvest losses contributed to the poverty condition of vegetable-farming households, illustrating how the loss of agricultural output can extend beyond farm profitability to affect household welfare.
The relationship between losses and income is also evident in research examining the broader tomato value chain. Suleiman et al. (2024) found that tomato wastage occurred at several stages, including harvesting, storage, transportation, loading and offloading, as well as through pest and disease damage. Farmers accounted for an estimated average physical loss of 1,154 kg in the study’s value-chain assessment, while the corresponding economic value of losses at different nodes demonstrated the financial magnitude of post-harvest inefficiencies (Suleiman, Abdulsalam, Hassan, & Yakubu, 2024).
The problem is not restricted to physical quantity losses. Quality deterioration can reduce the market value of tomatoes even when the fruit is not completely discarded. Bruised, cracked, overripe or partially rotten tomatoes may be sold at discounted prices. Consequently, measuring post-harvest losses only in kilograms may underestimate their effect on household income because the farmer can also suffer from reduced unit prices and increased marketing costs (Esguerra et al., 2018; Olayide et al., 2024).
Pests and diseases constitute another important source of tomato losses. The tomato pest Tuta absoluta, for example, has emerged as a serious production and post-production concern in parts of northern Nigeria. Recent evidence has documented the resurgence of Tuta absoluta in Kano’s tomato-producing areas, alongside concerns regarding inadequate storage facilities. Pest and disease damage can reduce the quality and quantity of tomatoes available for marketing and can therefore indirectly reduce farmers’ income (National Agricultural Productivity Survey, 2025; Abdullahi & Abdulsalam, 2022).
Inadequate access to post-harvest technologies can further expose smallholder farmers to avoidable losses. Appropriate packaging, improved storage, cooling, grading, sorting, transportation systems, processing and other technologies can help extend shelf life and maintain product quality. However, technology adoption among smallholder farmers is influenced by cost, awareness, access to extension services, credit, infrastructure and the perceived usefulness of the technology (Adeoye et al., 2025; Korie et al., 2022).
Recent evidence from Kano provides useful information on farmers’ post-harvest practices. Adeoye et al. (2025) studied 106 tomato producers in three Local Government Areas of Kano State and found that 70.8 percent of producers experienced post-harvest losses. The study also reported the continued use of raffia baskets by a large majority of producers, while many farmers stored tomatoes in farm sheds. These findings demonstrate that awareness of post-harvest practices does not necessarily translate into access to or adoption of improved technologies.
Processing represents another potentially important strategy for reducing losses and improving income. When fresh tomato supplies exceed immediate consumption capacity, processing can transform a highly perishable product into products with longer shelf lives. Studies on tomato value addition in Nigeria have demonstrated that processing into products such as dried tomato, powder, whole peel and puree can be economically viable and can help reduce wastage while creating additional income opportunities (Nigerian Journal of Horticultural Science, 2022).
At the national level, the challenge of tomato post-harvest loss has implications for food security and agricultural transformation. Nigeria is identified as a major tomato producer in Africa, yet FAO notes that only a relatively small proportion of national tomato production is processed and that post-harvest losses can reach very high levels. The persistence of substantial losses means that increasing production alone may not be sufficient to meet consumer demand or maximize farmers’ economic returns. Greater attention must also be paid to storage, transportation, processing, market coordination and other post-harvest systems (FAO, 2023).
Post-harvest loss reduction is therefore increasingly viewed as an important component of sustainable food-system development. Reducing losses allows existing agricultural resources to produce more usable food and income without necessarily requiring a proportional expansion of cultivated land. It can also reduce pressure on farmers to increase production merely to compensate for losses after harvest. From a household perspective, preventing the loss of harvested tomatoes means preserving a greater share of the farmer’s expected economic return (FAO, 2019; Olayide et al., 2024).
The issue is particularly important for smallholder households because they often have limited financial capacity to absorb unexpected losses. A commercial farmer with substantial capital may be able to invest in cold storage, improved packaging, refrigerated transport or processing. A smallholder farmer, by contrast, may depend on traditional storage and transportation arrangements and may lack sufficient liquidity to delay sales when prices are low. Thus, the consequences of post-harvest losses may be disproportionately severe for households whose livelihoods depend heavily on agricultural income (Bada et al., 2023).
Household income is a particularly important indicator in this context because farm revenue does not necessarily represent the actual economic welfare of farming households. Farmers have production costs, household consumption needs, school expenses, health expenditures, transportation costs and other financial obligations. A reduction in income from tomato production can therefore affect the household’s capacity to meet these needs. Where tomato farming constitutes a major source of household income, persistent post-harvest losses may contribute to indebtedness, reduced consumption, lower investment and vulnerability to poverty (Bada et al., 2023).
The Kano context also presents a paradox that warrants further investigation. On one hand, the state possesses favourable conditions for tomato production, a large agricultural labour force, irrigation infrastructure and extensive markets. On the other hand, farmers continue to experience losses arising from handling, storage, packaging, transportation, pest attacks and limited processing capacity. Recent evidence indicates that tomato production in Kano remains economically important despite these constraints, suggesting that reducing post-harvest losses could increase the benefits derived from existing production systems (Suleiman et al., 2024; National Agricultural Productivity Survey, 2025).
Furthermore, the opening and expansion of processing opportunities in Kano creates the possibility of reducing dependence on immediate fresh-tomato sales. However, the availability of a processing facility does not automatically solve the problem for all smallholder farmers. Farmers may still face challenges relating to distance, transportation costs, quality standards, market access, pricing arrangements and the ability to meet processors’ requirements. Therefore, household income outcomes depend on the interaction of production, post-harvest management and market conditions rather than on production volume alone (FAO, 2023; Suleiman et al., 2024).
Although existing studies have established that tomato post-harvest losses are significant in Kano State, many have concentrated on selected tomato-producing Local Government Areas outside the immediate metropolitan context or have examined the broader value chain involving farmers, wholesalers, retailers and processors. For example, Bada et al. (2021) focused on Kura, Tofa and Wudil, while Suleiman et al. (2024) examined actors across the Kano tomato value chain. These studies are important, but their findings cannot automatically be assumed to represent smallholder farmers in tomato-producing communities within Kano Municipal and its surrounding areas because post-harvest conditions can vary according to proximity to markets, transportation networks, storage arrangements and farmer characteristics.
There is consequently a need for a focused investigation of the relationship between post-harvest losses and household income among smallholder tomato farmers in tomato-producing communities in Kano Municipal and surrounding areas. Such a study can generate localized evidence on the magnitude and forms of losses experienced by farmers, the major causes of these losses, the post-harvest practices employed, the income consequences of losses and the constraints limiting effective loss reduction. This evidence can contribute to better agricultural extension programming, post-harvest technology interventions, market development and policies aimed at improving the welfare of tomato-producing households (Olayide et al., 2024; Adeoye et al., 2025).
It is against this background that this study examines Post-Harvest Losses and Household Income among Smallholder Tomato Farmers: A Study of Tomato-Producing Communities in Kano Municipal and Surrounding Areas, Kano State. The study is premised on the expectation that reducing avoidable losses between harvest and sale can increase the quantity and quality of tomatoes available for marketing and, consequently, improve the economic returns available to farming households. By empirically examining this relationship within the specified study area, the research seeks to provide evidence that can support practical strategies for improving tomato farmers’ income and livelihood outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Tomato farming provides an important source of livelihood and income for many smallholder farmers in Kano State. The crop is commercially valuable, has strong consumer demand and is cultivated extensively under both irrigated and other production systems. However, the economic benefits that farmers expect from tomato production can be undermined by substantial losses occurring after harvest. The existence of a large market for tomatoes does not necessarily translate into increased household income when significant quantities deteriorate before they are sold (Bada et al., 2021; FAO, 2023).
The fundamental problem is that farmers incur most production costs before knowing how much of their harvested tomatoes will eventually be sold. Land preparation, seed purchase, fertilizer application, irrigation, pesticides, labour and harvesting costs are incurred whether the produce is ultimately sold or lost. When tomatoes deteriorate after harvest, the farmer loses the economic value of the output while the associated production expenditure remains largely unrecovered. Post-harvest loss therefore represents a direct threat to farm profitability and household income (Bada et al., 2021).
Existing evidence suggests that the magnitude of tomato losses in Kano is substantial. Bada et al. (2021) reported a mean producer-level post-harvest loss index of about 20.2 percent and found that post-harvest losses were associated with a major reduction in gross margin. Their findings indicate that losses occurring during harvesting, sorting, packaging and transportation can have statistically significant negative effects on producer profit. This demonstrates that the post-harvest problem is not merely an issue of physical wastage but a significant economic problem for farmers.
The problem is further demonstrated by research on vegetable farming households in Kano State. Bada et al. (2023) reported a mean value of tomato losses of approximately ₦120,905 per hectare and concluded that post-harvest losses contributed significantly to the poverty status of vegetable-farming households. Such findings raise concerns about whether smallholder tomato farmers are able to convert their production efforts into adequate household income after losses have been taken into account (Bada et al., 2023).
Despite the economic importance of the problem, tomato farmers continue to rely substantially on traditional post-harvest handling methods. Evidence from Kano indicates continued use of raffia baskets, farm sheds and other relatively basic handling and storage arrangements. Although these methods may be affordable and familiar to farmers, they may provide inadequate protection against compression, bruising, heat and deterioration, particularly during periods of high production (Adeoye et al., 2025).
Transportation is another major problem. Tomatoes frequently have to be transported from production communities to urban markets and other destinations. Poor road conditions, inappropriate packaging, rough handling, overloading and delays can cause physical damage and accelerate deterioration. Suleiman et al. (2024) found that transportation, storage, harvesting, loading and offloading were among the stages associated with significant tomato losses in Kano State.
Storage inadequacy creates an additional economic problem because farmers may be unable to hold tomatoes temporarily when market prices are unfavourable. The highly perishable nature of the crop means that delaying sales without appropriate storage facilities may increase rather than reduce losses. Consequently, farmers may be compelled to sell rapidly at low prices during periods of market glut, thereby reducing their expected income (FAO, 1989; FAO, 2023).
The seasonal nature of tomato production also contributes to the problem. When many farmers harvest at approximately the same period, the quantity entering local markets may increase sharply. Where processing and storage capacity is inadequate, excess supply can result in price reductions. Farmers therefore face the combined challenge of physical deterioration and unfavourable prices. A portion of their harvest may be lost completely while another portion may be sold below its expected value (Olayide et al., 2024; Bada et al., 2021).
Another dimension of the problem is pest and disease attack. Recent evidence from Kano has highlighted the resurgence of Tuta absoluta in tomato-producing areas, alongside continuing concerns over inadequate post-harvest infrastructure. Pest-related damage can begin before harvesting and continue to affect fruit quality after harvest. Farmers who experience both production and post-harvest losses may consequently have substantially less marketable output and reduced income from the same investment of labour and capital (National Agricultural Productivity Survey, 2025).
The availability of improved post-harvest technologies does not necessarily mean that smallholder farmers can easily use them. Technologies such as improved packaging, storage facilities, cooling systems, processing equipment and better transportation may involve costs beyond the financial capacity of some smallholder households. Limited access to credit, inadequate extension support, low awareness and weak market linkages can further restrict adoption (Adeoye et al., 2025; Korie et al., 2022).
There is also a knowledge and extension problem. Farmers require appropriate information concerning maturity indices, harvesting time, sorting, grading, packaging, storage, transportation and alternative processing methods. Where extension contact is limited or post-harvest advice is insufficient, farmers may continue using practices that expose harvested tomatoes to avoidable losses. This suggests that increasing production without strengthening post-harvest extension services may not produce the desired improvement in household income (Olayide et al., 2024; Adeoye et al., 2025).
The income implications are particularly serious for households that depend heavily on tomato farming. Bada et al. (2023) found that vegetable farming was the major source of income for a large proportion of the households studied in Kano State and demonstrated that post-harvest losses were connected with poverty outcomes. Thus, the problem extends beyond the farm gate: loss of tomato income may affect households’ ability to meet food, education, health, housing and other basic expenditure needs.
Another problem is that available studies do not provide sufficient localized evidence for tomato-producing communities in Kano Municipal and surrounding areas. Existing Kano studies have examined selected LGAs such as Kura, Tofa and Wudil or have considered actors throughout the wider tomato value chain. While such studies provide useful evidence, differences in market proximity, road networks, storage arrangements, farm size, farmer experience and access to urban consumers may produce different post-harvest outcomes in communities closer to Kano Municipal (Bada et al., 2021; Suleiman et al., 2024).
Furthermore, much of the available evidence focuses on estimating the quantity or value of losses rather than specifically examining how those losses translate into household income outcomes for smallholder farmers. Understanding the physical magnitude of losses is important, but it is equally important to determine how the loss of marketable tomatoes affects the actual income available to farming households. This distinction is central to the present study because household welfare depends ultimately on economic returns rather than physical production alone (Olayide et al., 2024; Bada et al., 2023).
There is also insufficient clarity concerning which specific post-harvest stages contribute most to the income problem within the proposed study area. Losses may occur during harvesting, sorting, packaging, loading, transportation, storage and marketing, but the relative contribution of each stage may differ between communities. Without identifying the stages at which losses are greatest, interventions may be poorly targeted. A farmer may, for example, receive training on harvesting practices while the most serious losses actually occur during transportation or storage (Suleiman et al., 2024; Bada et al., 2021).
The problem is further complicated by the difference between quantity loss and quality loss. A tomato that is partially damaged may still be sold, but usually at a lower price. Consequently, farmers may underestimate their losses when they count only completely spoiled tomatoes. The reduction in selling price caused by bruising, cracking, over-ripening and other quality defects can represent an important hidden component of income loss (Esguerra et al., 2018; Olayide et al., 2024).
There is therefore a practical need to establish whether the observed post-harvest losses have a statistically significant relationship with household income among smallholder tomato farmers in the study area. Establishing this relationship is important because the existence of post-harvest losses does not by itself quantify their economic effect. Empirical analysis is required to determine whether variations in post-harvest losses are associated with corresponding variations in household income after considering the realities of smallholder tomato production (Bada et al., 2021; Bada et al., 2023).
The persistence of these problems presents a significant challenge to agricultural development in Kano State. If farmers continue to lose substantial quantities of harvested tomatoes or sell damaged produce at reduced prices, increased production may not result in proportional improvements in household welfare. Conversely, effective reduction of post-harvest losses could increase the quantity and quality of tomatoes marketed without necessarily requiring farmers to cultivate substantially larger areas. This makes post-harvest management an important pathway for improving smallholder agricultural income (FAO, 2019; FAO, 2023).
It is against this background that the present study seeks to investigate Post-Harvest Losses and Household Income among Smallholder Tomato Farmers in Tomato-Producing Communities in Kano Municipal and Surrounding Areas, Kano State. Specifically, the study will examine the forms and extent of post-harvest losses, identify their major causes, assess post-harvest handling practices, determine household income from tomato production, examine the relationship between post-harvest losses and household income, and identify constraints limiting farmers’ ability to reduce losses. The findings are expected to provide evidence for farmers, agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, development agencies and other stakeholders interested in improving the profitability and sustainability of smallholder tomato production.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The general purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between post-harvest losses and household income among smallholder tomato farmers in tomato-producing communities in Kano Municipal and surrounding areas, Kano State.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- determine the nature and extent of post-harvest losses experienced by smallholder tomato farmers in the study area;
- identify the major causes of post-harvest losses among smallholder tomato farmers in the study area;
- examine the post-harvest handling, storage, packaging and transportation practices adopted by smallholder tomato farmers;
- determine the level of household income derived from tomato production among the farmers
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide the study:
- What is the nature and extent of post-harvest losses experienced by smallholder tomato farmers in tomato-producing communities in Kano Municipal and surrounding areas?
- What are the major causes of post-harvest losses among smallholder tomato farmers in the study area?
- What post-harvest handling, storage, packaging and transportation practices are adopted by smallholder tomato farmers?
- What level of household income do smallholder farmers derive from tomato production in the study area?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the :
H₀: There is no significant relationship between post-harvest losses and household income among smallholder tomato farmers in tomato-producing communities in Kano Municipal and surrounding areas, Kano State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to smallholder tomato farmers because it will provide evidence concerning the economic consequences of losing tomatoes after harvest. By identifying the major sources and stages of loss, farmers may be better positioned to adopt appropriate harvesting, sorting, grading, packaging, storage and transportation practices. The findings may also help farmers understand that post-harvest management is an important component of farm profitability rather than an activity that begins only after production has been completed.
The study will be useful to agricultural extension personnel. Extension agents require empirical information on the specific problems confronting farmers before they can provide appropriate technical recommendations. The findings will identify the post-harvest practices that farmers currently employ, the areas where deficiencies exist and the technologies or management practices requiring greater extension attention.
The study will also be relevant to government agencies and agricultural policymakers. Evidence concerning the relationship between post-harvest losses and household income can support policies directed toward improved rural roads, storage infrastructure, transportation systems, processing facilities, farmer training and access to agricultural credit. Such policies can help ensure that increased agricultural production translates into greater economic benefits for farming households.
The study will benefit agricultural development agencies and non-governmental organisations working with smallholder farmers. Such organisations can use the findings to design interventions involving improved packaging, post-harvest handling, low-cost storage, processing, farmer cooperatives and market linkages. The study will be significant to financial institutions and agricultural credit providers. Information about the economic effects of post-harvest losses may encourage the development of financial products that enable farmers to invest in improved storage, packaging, transportation and small-scale processing equipment. Access to appropriate finance can improve farmers’ capacity to move from traditional post-harvest practices toward more efficient systems.
The study will also be useful to tomato processors and marketers. Understanding the post-harvest challenges faced by producers can help processors and market actors develop stronger linkages with farming communities. Improved coordination between producers and downstream actors may facilitate timely collection, better grading, improved packaging and alternative marketing arrangements that reduce deterioration.
The findings will be useful to researchers and students in agricultural economics, agricultural extension, rural development, development studies and related disciplines. The study will contribute localized evidence to the growing literature on food loss, agricultural value chains, smallholder livelihoods and rural household income. It may also provide a basis for future research comparing tomato-producing communities in different parts of Kano State or other regions of Nigeria.
Finally, the study will be relevant to households and communities in the study area because improving the income earned from tomato farming can have wider livelihood implications. Higher and more stable agricultural income can potentially strengthen household capacity to meet food, education, healthcare and other welfare needs. Reducing post-harvest losses may therefore contribute not only to agricultural efficiency but also to broader rural livelihood improvement.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on post-harvest losses and household income among smallholder tomato farmers in tomato-producing communities in Kano Municipal and surrounding areas of Kano State.
The study will cover the major stages of tomato handling after harvest, including:
- harvesting;
- sorting and grading;
- packaging;
- loading and offloading;
- transportation;
- temporary storage; and
- marketing.
The study will examine the types and extent of losses experienced by farmers, the causes of such losses, farmers’ post-harvest management practices, household income derived from tomato production and the relationship between post-harvest losses and household income.
The study will also examine selected socioeconomic characteristics of farmers, such as age, sex, household size, education, farming experience, farm size, access to extension services, access to credit and access to post-harvest technologies, to the extent that these variables are relevant to the research objectives.
The study is limited to smallholder tomato farmers and does not primarily investigate wholesalers, retailers, processors or consumers, although their activities may be discussed where they affect losses experienced by farmers.
1.8 Delimitation of the Study
The study is delimited geographically to tomato-producing communities located within Kano Municipal and selected surrounding areas of Kano State. The exact communities and sampling units will be established during the methodology stage using an appropriate sampling frame of tomato-producing communities and farmers.
Conceptually, the study is delimited to the relationship between post-harvest losses and household income. It does not attempt to examine every determinant of household welfare or every factor influencing tomato production. Production issues such as seed variety, fertilizer use, pest management and irrigation will only be considered where they have a direct connection with post-harvest losses.
The study is also delimited to fresh tomato production and marketing by smallholder farmers. Industrial-scale tomato production and large commercial agribusinesses are outside the principal focus of the research.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Household Income: The total monetary earnings available to a farming household from tomato production and other relevant income-generating activities within the period specified by the study.
Post-Harvest Loss: The physical quantity, quality or economic value of harvested tomatoes that is lost or reduced between harvesting and final sale, consumption or processing.
Smallholder Tomato Farmer: A farmer operating a relatively small-scale tomato production enterprise with limited land, capital, technology and other productive resources compared with large commercial producers.
Tomato Farmer: An individual who cultivates tomato as an agricultural enterprise for household consumption, sale or both.
Harvesting Loss: Tomato produce that becomes damaged, dropped, bruised or otherwise unmarketable during the process of harvesting.
Sorting and Grading Loss: Reduction in usable or marketable tomatoes resulting from the removal or downgrading of fruits that are damaged, diseased, overripe, undersized or otherwise unsuitable for the preferred market.
Packaging Loss: Loss or quality deterioration caused by inappropriate, inadequate or poorly handled containers and packaging materials.
Transportation Loss: Physical or quality deterioration occurring while tomatoes are being moved from the farm to storage locations, markets, processors or other destinations.
Storage Loss: Deterioration or physical loss of tomatoes occurring while produce is temporarily kept before sale, processing or consumption.
Marketing Loss: Reduction in the quantity or value of tomatoes occurring during market handling, including prolonged exposure, repeated handling and delays before sale.
Household Welfare: The economic and material condition of a farming household as reflected in its capacity to meet basic needs and maintain livelihood activities.
Post-Harvest Management Practices: Activities and techniques used by farmers to preserve the quantity and quality of tomatoes after harvesting, including sorting, grading, packaging, storage, transportation and processing.
