INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Postcolonial literature has emerged as a critical field for exploring the effects of colonialism on identity, culture, and societal structures in formerly colonized nations. In Africa, colonialism not only disrupted indigenous systems of governance and culture but also imposed Western ideologies that have had lasting impacts on the ways in which individuals perceive themselves and their communities (Ashcroft, Griffiths, & Tiffin, 2013). The struggle to assert cultural identity, reclaim history, and resist the lingering psychological and structural effects of colonial domination has become a recurring theme in contemporary African literature.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a leading Nigerian novelist, addresses these postcolonial concerns through her works, particularly in Half of a Yellow Sun (2006). The novel is set against the backdrop of the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) and intricately portrays the intersections of personal identity, historical trauma, and socio-political resistance. Through her characters, Adichie explores how colonial legacies influence perceptions of ethnicity, class, gender, and nationality, while also highlighting the resilience and agency of individuals navigating these complex terrains (Nnaemeka, 2011).

Contemporary African literature, as represented by Adichie, often becomes a site of resistance where narratives challenge dominant historical discourses and reconstruct marginalized voices. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

The aftermath of colonialism in Africa has left deep and multifaceted impacts on individual and collective identities. While postcolonial studies have addressed the macro-level effects of colonial legacies on nations, there remains a gap in understanding how these influences permeate individual consciousness and manifest in contemporary cultural expressions. Specifically, the intersection of identity, memory, and resistance in literature has received limited in-depth analysis in the context of Nigerian postcolonial experiences.

Although Half of a Yellow Sun has been widely studied for its historical and political representation of the Nigerian Civil War, few studies have systematically examined how Adichie uses narrative strategies to explore postcolonial identity formation and resistance. Questions remain about how her characters negotiate cultural hybridity, ethnic divisions, and the psychological effects of colonialism while resisting socio-political oppression. The absence of comprehensive literary analyses in this area limits the understanding of the broader role of literature in shaping and contesting postcolonial realities.

Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by examining how Adichie’s novel reflects and critiques postcolonial identities, exploring both individual and collective forms of resistance embedded in her narrative.

1.3 Research Objectives

The primary objective of this study is to examine postcolonial identity and resistance in contemporary African literature through a case study of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun. Specifically, the study seeks to:

Moreover, the study underscores the significance of literature as a tool for cultural reclamation and social critique in postcolonial contexts.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses exclusively on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun, analyzing its narrative representation of postcolonial identity and resistance. While other works by Adichie or other African authors may touch on similar themes, this study confines itself to the Nigerian Civil War context and the novel’s exploration of identity, memory, and resistance.
