CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Access to clean and safe water is a basic human right and a cornerstone of public health. Yet, in many rural communities across Nigeria, including those in Osun State, residents face persistent challenges regarding water quality and sanitation. Waterborne diseases — infections transmitted through contaminated water — remain a major global health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where infrastructure for potable water and adequate sanitation is limited (WHO, 2019). These illnesses include diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, and other parasitic infections, often linked to pathogenic microorganisms entering water sources through faecal contamination and poor hygiene practices (Okonko et al., 2008).
Nigeria’s rural communities rely on surface and subsurface water sources such as rivers, streams, hand-dug wells, and unprotected boreholes, many of which are highly susceptible to contamination from human and animal wastes (Oluduro & Akinremi, 2012). Studies conducted in various parts of Nigeria have documented high prevalence rates of waterborne pathogens among household water sources, illustrating the public health risk and the behavioural and environmental factors that underlie disease transmission (Adewale et al., 2020). For example, research in Enugu State found that more than 80% of households were exposed to waterborne infections, largely due to unsafe water choices and poor hygiene practices (Ugochukwu et al., 2017).
In rural parts of Osun State, such as Asa Community in Ola Oluwa Local Government Area, similar environmental conditions — including limited access to potable water, insufficient sanitation facilities, and low levels of public health awareness — may predispose residents to waterborne illnesses (Adeniran et al., 2021). Recent studies in rural Osun communities highlighted that a substantial proportion of households rely on surface and groundwater sources and face significant challenges with sanitation access and hygiene practices (Olawale & Oyediran, 2022). Furthermore, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6) report for rural Osun noted that many communities lack functional water infrastructure, underscoring the potential for health impacts associated with unsafe water use (United Nations, 2020).
Despite the evident risks, community-level data on the prevalence of waterborne diseases and awareness levels in Asa Community remain sparse. Without such empirical evidence, public health interventions, policy planning, and community education efforts may be poorly targeted, leaving residents vulnerable to preventable illnesses (Oladele et al., 2019).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Waterborne diseases continue to pose significant health challenges for rural populations in Nigeria. Although national and regional studies have highlighted the widespread occurrence of waterborne infections and associated risk factors, there is limited specific evidence on how these challenges manifest at the micro-community level in Ola Oluwa Local Government Area of Osun State (Adeniran et al., 2021). This knowledge gap is particularly concerning for Asa Community, where residents often depend on untreated water sources and may have limited awareness of water contamination and disease transmission pathways.
In many rural areas, the lack of reliable data on the prevalence of waterborne diseases and community awareness levels hampers effective public health responses (Oluduro & Akinremi, 2012). This is exacerbated by insufficient health education, poor sanitation infrastructure, and cultural practices that may inadvertently increase exposure to contaminated water. The absence of localized studies makes it difficult for government agencies, NGOs, and community leaders to design targeted interventions that could reduce incidence rates and improve water-related health outcomes (Okonko et al., 2008).
Consequently, there is a pressing need to investigate the magnitude of waterborne disease occurrence and the degree of awareness about these diseases among residents in Asa Community to inform effective public health strategies and policy actions.
1.3 Research Objectives
The main aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of waterborne diseases and awareness levels among residents of Asa Community, Ola Oluwa LGA, Osun State.
The specific objectives are to:
- Determine the prevalence of waterborne diseases among residents of Asa Community.
- Assess the level of awareness of waterborne diseases, their causes, and preventive measures.
- Identify the common sources of drinking water used by residents.
- Examine the relationship between awareness levels and prevalence of waterborne diseases.
1.4 Research Questions
- What is the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Asa Community?
- How aware are residents of the causes and prevention of waterborne diseases?
- What are the primary sources of drinking water for residents?
- Is there a relationship between awareness levels and the occurrence of waterborne diseases?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the level of awareness of waterborne diseases and the prevalence of waterborne diseases among residents of Asa Community.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between the level of awareness of waterborne diseases and the prevalence of waterborne diseases among residents of Asa Community.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are significant to several stakeholders:
- Residents and community leaders will gain insights into the extent of waterborne disease risks and the importance of awareness and preventive practices.
- Public health authorities and policy makers can use the evidence to develop targeted interventions for improving water quality, sanitation, and health education in rural Osun communities (WHO, 2019).
- Researchers and academics will benefit from localized data that contribute to the broader literature on water safety and public health in Nigeria (Oladele et al., 2019).
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on residents of Asa Community in Ola Oluwa Local Government Area, Osun State. It covers the determination of waterborne disease prevalence, assessment of awareness levels regarding these diseases, and the identification of common water sources used for daily consumption and domestic activities (Adeniran et al., 2021).
1.8 Definition of Terms
- Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, or parasites) that are transmitted through the consumption of contaminated water or contact with contaminated water sources. Examples include cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and diarrhoea (WHO, 2019).
- Prevalence: The proportion of individuals in a population who are affected by a particular disease at a given point in time. In this study, it refers to the number of residents in Asa Community who have experienced waterborne diseases (Adewale et al., 2020).
- Awareness: The knowledge or understanding that residents have regarding the causes, symptoms, prevention, and control of waterborne diseases (Oladele et al., 2019).
- Residents: Individuals living in Asa Community, Ola Oluwa Local Government Area, Osun State, who rely on local water sources for domestic use.
- Community: A group of people living in the same geographic area and sharing common social and environmental characteristics, in this case, Asa Community (Adeniran et al., 2021).
- Water Quality: The chemical, physical, and microbiological characteristics of water, which determine its suitability for human consumption and domestic use (Oluduro & Akinremi, 2012).
- Sanitation: Measures and practices that promote hygienic conditions, especially the safe disposal of human waste and the prevention of disease transmission through water (United Nations, 2020).
- Ola Oluwa Local Government Area (LGA): An administrative region in Osun State, Nigeria, comprising several communities including Asa Community, where this study is focused.
- Rural Community: A non-urban settlement with lower population density, limited access to basic infrastructure, and predominantly agrarian or traditional economic activities (Olawale & Oyediran, 2022).
- Pathogen: A microorganism that can cause disease, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, often found in contaminated water (Okonko et al., 2008).
