INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malaria accounts for substantial morbidity and mortality, with pregnant women and children under five years being the most vulnerable groups. Pregnancy lowers immunity, making women more susceptible to malaria infection, which can result in serious health consequences for both the mother and the unborn child.
Malaria parasitaemia refers to the presence of malaria parasites in the blood, typically caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the most prevalent and deadly malaria species in Africa. During pregnancy, malaria parasitaemia is associated with adverse outcomes such as maternal anemia, low birth weight, preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, and even maternal and neonatal mortality. The placenta provides a favorable environment for parasite sequestration, further increasing the severity of infection in pregnant women.

The main objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and determinants of malaria parasitaemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
1.4 Specific Objectives

- To identify the socio-demographic factors associated with malaria parasitaemia among pregnant women.
