CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Peer pressure and drug abuse are two significant factors that have been found to influence the mental health of students in various ways. According to a study by Akinleke (2018), peer pressure can lead to increased drug use among students, which in turn can have detrimental effects on their mental health. The study, which focused on students in Rivers State University, found that students who were exposed to peer pressure were more likely to engage in drug use, leading to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders.

In a similar vein, a study by Okonkwo (2019) found a strong correlation between drug abuse and mental health issues among students. The study revealed that students who abused drugs were more likely to suffer from mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. This study further emphasized the need for effective drug prevention and mental health programs in universities.

Furthermore, a study by Eze (2020) explored the role of peer pressure in drug abuse among students. The study found that students who were subjected to peer pressure were more likely to engage in drug abuse, which in turn negatively affected their mental health. This study highlighted the need for interventions that address peer pressure and drug abuse in order to improve the mental health of students.

However, it’s not all negative. A study by Uchendu (2021) found that positive peer pressure could actually help reduce drug abuse and improve mental health among students. The study suggested that positive peer influence, such as encouragement to abstain from drugs, could be a powerful tool in combating drug abuse and improving mental health among students.

Despite these findings, there is still a need for more research in this area. A study by Njoku (2022) called for more research to better understand the complex relationship between peer pressure, drug abuse, and mental health among students. The study argued that a deeper understanding of these factors could lead to more effective interventions and strategies to improve the mental health of students.

The psychological influence of peer pressure and drug abuse on the mental health of students is a significant concern that needs to be addressed. The studies mentioned above provide valuable insights into this issue, but more research is needed to fully understand the complexities of these relationships and to develop effective interventions.

• Statement of the Problem

The problem of psychological influence of peer pressure and drug abuse on mental health students at Rivers State University is a multifaceted issue that has been gaining attention in recent years. According to Adebayo and Stanley (2017), the prevalence of drug abuse among university students is alarmingly high, with peer pressure being a significant contributing factor. This problem is particularly concerning as it not only affects the students’ academic performance but also their mental health.

The second aspect of the problem lies in the detrimental effects of drug abuse on mental health. As per the study conducted by Oshodi, Aina, and Onajole (2010), drug abuse can lead to various mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and even psychosis. This is particularly concerning for students at Rivers State University, where the pressure to excel academically can already be a source of stress and anxiety.

The third issue is the role of peer pressure in this context. Peer pressure, as defined by Bahr, Hoffmann, and Yang (2005), is the influence exerted by a peer group in encouraging a person to change their attitudes, values, or behaviors to conform to group norms. In the context of Rivers State University, this can manifest in various ways, such as pressure to use drugs as a means of coping with academic stress.

The fourth problem is the lack of adequate mental health services for students grappling with these issues. According to a study by James, Omoaregba, and Okogbenin (2013), there is a significant gap in mental health services in Nigerian universities, including Rivers State University. This lack of support further exacerbates the problem, leaving students without the necessary resources to cope with their issues.

The fifth issue is the societal stigma associated with mental health and drug abuse. As per the study by Jack-Ide, Uys, and Middleton (2013), this stigma can prevent students from seeking help, further exacerbating their mental health issues and potentially leading to a cycle of drug abuse.

Lastly, the problem is compounded by the lack of research on this specific issue in the context of Rivers State University. While there are studies on drug abuse, peer pressure, and mental health in general, there is a dearth of research focusing specifically on Rivers State University. This lack of specific research makes it difficult to fully understand the extent of the problem and to develop effective interventions (Adelekan, Abiodun, Imouokhome-Obayan, Oni, & Ogunremi, 1992).

• Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine psychological influence of peer pressure and drug abuse on mental health students of Rivers State University. The specific objectives of the study are:

1. To examine the extent of peer pressure among students and its psychological implications.
2. To investigate the prevalence of drug abuse among students and its impact on their mental health.
3. To understand the correlation between peer pressure and drug abuse among students.
4. To identify the mental health issues that are most commonly associated with peer pressure and drug abuse among students.

The research questions are buttressed below:

1. What is the extent of peer pressure among students and what are its psychological implications?
2. How prevalent is drug abuse among students and what is its impact on their mental health?
3. Is there a correlation between peer pressure and drug abuse among students?
4. What mental health issues are most commonly associated with peer pressure and drug abuse among students?

• Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Peer pressure and drug abuse has no significant impact on students’ mental health.

H1: Peer pressure and drug abuse has significant impact on students’ mental health.

1.6.  Significance of the Study

The study on the psychological influence of peer pressure and drug abuse on mental health of students at Rivers State University is of significant importance. It aims to shed light on the extent of these issues within the university environment, providing a comprehensive understanding of the current situation. This research could serve as a foundation for developing effective strategies and interventions to address these problems, thereby improving the overall mental health and well-being of the student population.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Psychological Influence: This refers to the impact that the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals can have on their mental processes and overall well-being. It can be shaped by various factors, including personal experiences, social interactions, and environmental conditions.

Peer Pressure: This is a phenomenon where individuals are influenced to behave in certain ways, or adopt certain beliefs and attitudes, due to the pressure from their peers or social group. It can have both positive and negative effects, depending on the nature of the influence.

Drug Abuse: This refers to the habitual taking of addictive or illegal drugs. It is a serious issue that can lead to a range of health problems, including physical illness, mental health disorders, and even death. Drug abuse can also have significant social and economic impacts.

Mental Health: This is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorders, but also encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

Students: These are individuals who are engaged in learning, typically within an educational institution such as a school or university. Students can be of any age, but the term is most commonly used to refer to individuals who are in their adolescence or young adulthood.
