INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Effective school leadership is widely recognized as a critical factor in promoting teacher professional development and improving student academic performance. School leaders, particularly principals and administrative heads, play a pivotal role in shaping the instructional climate, facilitating teacher training, and fostering an environment conducive to learning (Leithwood et al., 2020). In the context of Nigerian secondary schools, leadership quality significantly affects the implementation of educational policies, teacher motivation, and the achievement of academic goals (Okeke & Obi, 2019).

Teacher professional development (TPD) is essential for enhancing instructional competence, adopting innovative teaching strategies, and keeping abreast of evolving curricular demands (Darling-Hammond et al., 2017). School leaders influence TPD by providing opportunities for workshops, mentorship programs, peer collaboration, and access to educational resources. When effectively executed, such leadership initiatives positively impact student outcomes, as well-trained teachers are better equipped to deliver high-quality instruction (Bush & Glover, 2019).

In Ofu Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State, secondary schools face unique challenges, including limited resources, high teacher-student ratios, and varying levels of teacher competence. The role of school leadership in promoting professional development and improving student performance is therefore vital for bridging gaps in educational quality and achieving sustainable academic progress (Owolabi & Adebayo, 2021).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite numerous reforms and initiatives aimed at enhancing secondary education in Nigeria, student academic performance in many schools, including those in Ofu LGA, remains below expectations (Obi & Ibe, 2020). One contributing factor is the inadequate professional development of teachers, which can be attributed, in part, to ineffective school leadership. Some school leaders do not prioritize teacher training, lack clear strategies for professional growth, or fail to foster a collaborative instructional environment.

This situation raises concerns about the extent to which school leadership can positively influence teacher professional development and, in turn, student academic performance. Therefore, empirical research is needed to investigate the role of school leadership in addressing these challenges in selected secondary schools in Ofu LGA, Kogi State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the role of school leadership in promoting teacher professional development and improving student academic performance. The specific objectives are:

1. To examine the influence of school leadership on teacher professional development in selected secondary schools in Ofu LGA.

2. To assess the impact of school leadership on student academic performance in these schools.

3. To identify challenges faced by school leaders in promoting teacher professional development and enhancing student outcomes.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. How does school leadership influence teacher professional development in selected secondary schools in Ofu LGA?

2. What is the impact of school leadership on student academic performance in these schools?

3. What challenges do school leaders face in promoting teacher professional development and improving student outcomes?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

For empirical testing, the study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: School leadership has no significant impact on teacher professional development and student academic performance in selected secondary schools in Ofu LGA, Kogi State.
H₁: School leadership has a significant impact on teacher professional development and student academic performance in selected secondary schools in Ofu LGA, Kogi State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant for multiple stakeholders:

1. For school administrators and leaders, it provides insights into effective leadership strategies that enhance teacher growth and student performance.

2. For policymakers, it informs educational policy formulation, especially regarding professional development programs and leadership training.

3. For teachers, it highlights the importance of professional development opportunities facilitated by strong leadership.

4. For researchers and academics, it contributes to the literature on educational leadership, teacher development, and student performance in Nigerian secondary schools.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected secondary schools in Ofu LGA, Kogi State. It examines the role of school leadership in promoting teacher professional development and improving student academic performance. The scope is limited to public secondary schools and does not include private schools or primary schools in the LGA.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• School Leadership: The process by which school administrators, particularly principals, guide, influence, and manage teachers and students to achieve educational objectives (Bush & Glover, 2019).

• Teacher Professional Development (TPD): Activities and programs designed to enhance teachers’ knowledge, skills, and instructional practices (Darling-Hammond et al., 2017).

• Student Academic Performance: The level of achievement demonstrated by students in assessments, examinations, and overall academic outcomes (Okeke & Obi, 2019).
