INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The oil and gas industry is globally recognized as one of the most hazardous industrial sectors due to the complex, high-risk, and technologically intensive nature of its operations. Activities such as drilling, exploration, refining, transportation, and storage of petroleum products involve exposure to flammable materials, high-pressure systems, heavy machinery, toxic gases, and offshore environmental conditions. These operational realities make workplace safety a critical priority in the industry. Accidents in oil and gas facilities can lead to catastrophic consequences, including loss of lives, environmental degradation, financial losses, and reputational damage to organizations.
Globally, major industrial disasters such as the Piper Alpha explosion (1988), the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (2010), and other refinery explosions have drawn attention to the importance of safety systems and preventive strategies in high-risk industries. Research has consistently shown that human factors, unsafe behaviors, and inadequate safety practices significantly contribute to workplace accidents (Reason, 1997). While engineering controls and technological safeguards are important, employee behavior remains a critical determinant of workplace safety outcomes.
Accident prevention behaviors refer to the actions and practices adopted by workers to minimize risks and prevent workplace injuries or incidents. These behaviors include compliance with safety procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard reporting, adherence to operational guidelines, participation in safety meetings, and proactive identification of potential risks. According to Neal and Griffin (2006), safety behavior can be broadly categorized into safety compliance (adherence to mandatory safety rules) and safety participation (voluntary activities that support workplace safety).
One of the most effective organizational strategies for promoting accident prevention behaviors is safety training. Safety training involves structured programs designed to educate workers about workplace hazards, safety regulations, emergency response procedures, and safe operational practices. It equips employees with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to recognize risks and respond appropriately. Effective safety training enhances workers’ hazard awareness, reinforces safe work practices, and fosters a strong safety culture within organizations (Burke et al., 2006).
In the oil and gas sector, safety training is particularly vital due to the high-risk environment. Workers must be adequately trained to handle sophisticated equipment, manage emergencies such as fires and gas leaks, and comply with strict safety protocols. Shell Nigeria, as one of the leading multinational oil companies operating in Nigeria, implements various safety training programs aimed at promoting operational safety and minimizing workplace accidents. These programs often include induction training, refresher courses, hazard identification training, emergency drills, toolbox talks, and behavior-based safety initiatives.
Despite these efforts, workplace accidents and near-miss incidents continue to occur within the oil and gas industry in Nigeria. The Niger Delta region, where many Shell facilities are located, presents additional operational challenges, including difficult terrain, infrastructural limitations, environmental hazards, and sometimes security concerns. These factors can increase operational risk and place additional pressure on workers. In such environments, the effectiveness of safety training in shaping workers’ accident prevention behaviors becomes even more critical.
Research in occupational safety suggests that training alone may not automatically translate into safe behavior unless it is well-designed, practical, continuous, and supported by management commitment (Clarke, 2010). Workers’ attitudes, perceptions of management support, and safety culture also influence whether training outcomes are effectively applied in daily operations. Therefore, assessing the relationship between safety training and accident prevention behaviors is essential for understanding how training initiatives impact real-world safety practices.
In Nigeria, empirical studies examining safety training within the oil and gas industry are relatively limited, particularly those focusing on behavioral outcomes. Much of the available literature emphasizes environmental impacts, regulatory compliance, or technological safety systems, with less attention given to the behavioral dimensions of safety performance. Given the high stakes associated with oil and gas operations, there is a need for context-specific research that evaluates how safety training influences workers’ accident prevention behaviors in selected Shell Nigeria facilities.
This study therefore seeks to examine the relationship between safety training and accident prevention behaviors among oil and gas workers in selected Shell Nigeria facilities. By doing so, the study aims to contribute to occupational safety literature, provide evidence-based recommendations for improving training programs, and support efforts to strengthen safety culture within the Nigerian oil and gas industry.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Workplace accidents in the oil and gas industry continue to pose serious threats to employees, organizations, and the environment. Despite advancements in technology and the implementation of safety management systems, incidents such as equipment failures, fires, explosions, and exposure to hazardous substances still occur. Many of these incidents have been linked to unsafe work behaviors, human error, and non-compliance with safety procedures.
Shell Nigeria has invested significantly in safety training programs designed to enhance workers’ competence and reduce accident rates. However, the mere presence of safety training programs does not guarantee effective accident prevention behaviors among workers. There are concerns that some workers may attend training sessions without fully internalizing safety principles or consistently applying them during operations. In some cases, time pressure, production targets, complacency, or overconfidence may undermine adherence to safety procedures.
Furthermore, while safety policies and training manuals exist, there is limited empirical evidence evaluating the extent to which safety training influences actual accident prevention behaviors among oil and gas workers in Nigeria. Without such evidence, it is difficult to determine whether current training programs are sufficiently effective, relevant, and impactful in reducing unsafe behaviors.
In selected Shell Nigeria facilities, the operational environment is characterized by complex tasks, heavy equipment, hazardous chemicals, and high-pressure systems. Any lapse in safety behavior can result in severe consequences. Therefore, understanding whether safety training effectively translates into improved accident prevention behaviors is essential for minimizing risk and enhancing organizational performance.
The problem addressed in this study is the insufficient empirical understanding of how safety training influences accident prevention behaviors among oil and gas workers in selected Shell Nigeria facilities. Addressing this gap is necessary for improving training strategies, strengthening safety compliance, and reducing workplace accidents in the Nigerian oil and gas industry.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between safety training and accident prevention behaviors among oil and gas workers in selected Shell Nigeria facilities.
The specific objectives are to:

assess the nature and extent of safety training programs provided to workers in selected Shell Nigeria facilities;

examine the level of accident prevention behaviors among oil and gas workers;

determine the influence of safety training on accident prevention behaviors among workers;

identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of safety training in promoting accident prevention behaviors.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: Safety training has no significant effect on accident prevention behaviors among oil and gas workers in selected Shell Nigeria facilities.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to Shell Nigeria and other oil and gas organizations by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of safety training programs. The study will help management identify gaps in training delivery and improve strategies for promoting safe work behaviors. It will also contribute to occupational health and safety literature within the Nigerian context and serve as a reference for policymakers and future researchers.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on oil and gas workers in selected Shell Nigeria facilities. The study examines safety training as the independent variable and accident prevention behaviors as the dependent variable. The geographical scope is limited to selected operational facilities of Shell Nigeria.
