INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Late marriage, typically defined as marriage occurring after the age of 30, has become increasingly common in many societies due to shifting social norms, career ambitions, and the pursuit of higher education. This trend, especially among students pursuing postgraduate education, carries notable socioeconomic implications. According to Jones and Gubhaju (2009), delaying marriage is often motivated by the desire to attain higher educational and economic stability, which in turn has implications for academic focus and long-term career outcomes. For students, particularly those in higher education, postponing marriage can mean fewer distractions, more time for academic work, and a greater capacity to participate in educational opportunities without familial obligations.

Several studies have emphasized the positive academic outcomes associated with delaying marriage. Research by Arnett (2004) suggests that emerging adulthood—a phase marked by delayed marriage and increased education—allows individuals to focus on identity exploration, including educational goals. The study examines socioeconomic implications of late marriage on the student academic achievements. The study is limited to adult education students from selected higher institution in Lagos.

1.8  Operational Definition of Terms

Socioeconomic: “Socioeconomic” refers to the combination of social and economic factors that influence and shape an individual’s or group’s position within society. These factors may include income, education level, occupation, social status, and access to resources. In this study, “socioeconomic” pertains to the financial, educational, and social conditions that affect students’ decisions regarding marriage and their capacity to succeed academically.

Implications: “Implications” are the possible effects, consequences, or outcomes that result from a specific action, condition, or decision. The study investigates the implications of late marriage, meaning it explores how the decision to marry later may positively or negatively affect students’ academic performance and social circumstances.

Late Marriage: “Late marriage” is generally defined as getting married at an older age than the societal or cultural average, often after the age of 30. In the context of this research, late marriage refers to students choosing to postpone marriage until they have completed their academic studies or reached a certain level of personal or professional stability.

Student: A “student” is an individual who is actively engaged in formal education, typically enrolled in an academic institution such as a university or college. This study focuses on students, particularly those in tertiary education, who are balancing academic responsibilities while navigating personal life choices, including the decision to marry later in life.

Academic Achievements: “Academic achievements” refer to measurable educational outcomes such as grades, GPA, course completion, degrees earned, honors received, and other indicators of academic performance and success.
