INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Inflation is a persistent macroeconomic phenomenon that affects the general price level of goods and services in an economy over time. In developing economies such as Nigeria, inflation has remained a critical economic issue with far-reaching implications for households, businesses, and the education sector. Rising inflation reduces the purchasing power of money, increases the cost of living, and places significant pressure on household welfare, particularly among low- and middle-income earners.

Over the past decade, Nigeria has experienced fluctuating but generally high inflation rates, driven by factors such as exchange rate instability, fuel price increases, supply chain disruptions, and structural inefficiencies in agricultural production. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2023), inflation rates have consistently remained in double digits, with food inflation being particularly severe. This has led to increased hardship for households, as a significant portion of income is spent on basic necessities such as food, transportation, and education.

Household welfare, which encompasses the standard of living, access to basic needs, and overall well-being of individuals and families, is directly influenced by inflationary pressures. As prices rise, households often adopt coping mechanisms such as reducing consumption, withdrawing children from school, or engaging in multiple income-generating activities. These responses can have long-term implications for human capital development and educational outcomes.

Within the educational context, inflation affects both teachers and students in multiple ways. Teachers, as salaried workers, often experience a decline in real income when wages do not keep pace with rising prices. This can lead to reduced job satisfaction, lower morale, and decreased productivity, ultimately affecting the quality of teaching and learning in schools. Similarly, students are affected through increased costs of educational materials, transportation, and school fees, which may hinder regular attendance and academic performance.

Despite the relevance of inflation to everyday life, there is growing concern about the level of economic literacy among secondary school teachers and students in Nigeria. Economic literacy refers to the ability to understand basic economic concepts and apply them to real-life situations. In the context of inflation, awareness includes knowledge of its causes, effects, and possible policy responses. Studies have shown that limited understanding of economic concepts can reduce individuals’ ability to make informed financial decisions and adapt effectively to economic changes (Ogunleye, 2017).

Secondary schools play a crucial role in equipping students with foundational knowledge of economic principles, particularly through subjects such as Economics and Social Studies. Teachers are expected to serve as facilitators of this knowledge, helping students understand complex economic issues like inflation and their implications for household welfare. However, the effectiveness of this process depends largely on the level of awareness and understanding possessed by both teachers and students.

In many cases, the teaching of Economics in Nigerian secondary schools is often theoretical, with limited emphasis on practical application to real-life economic challenges such as inflation. This gap between theory and practice may result in students having superficial knowledge of economic concepts without fully understanding their real-world implications. Furthermore, teachers themselves may lack adequate training or up-to-date knowledge of current economic trends, thereby limiting their ability to effectively convey these concepts.

Given the increasing economic challenges facing households in Nigeria, it is essential to assess the level of awareness of inflation among teachers and students and examine how this awareness influences their understanding of household welfare. This study therefore seeks to investigate teachers’ and students’ awareness of inflation and its effects on household welfare in secondary schools in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Inflation continues to pose a significant challenge to economic stability and household welfare in Nigeria. The persistent rise in the cost of goods and services has adversely affected the standard of living of many households, leading to increased poverty, reduced consumption, and financial stress. While the effects of inflation are widely experienced, there is concern that many individuals, including teachers and students, may not fully understand the underlying causes and implications of this economic phenomenon.

In secondary schools, Economics is taught as a subject intended to provide students with knowledge of key economic concepts, including inflation. However, there is evidence to suggest that students often lack a practical understanding of these concepts, limiting their ability to relate classroom learning to real-life situations. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process in fostering economic awareness.

Furthermore, teachers, who are expected to guide students in understanding economic issues, may themselves have limited awareness or inadequate training regarding contemporary economic realities such as inflation and its impact on household welfare. This situation may result in ineffective teaching, where students memorize definitions without fully grasping the practical implications of inflation.

Another critical issue is that the lack of awareness of inflation and its effects may hinder both teachers and students from making informed financial decisions. For instance, households may fail to adopt appropriate coping strategies in response to rising prices, thereby worsening their economic conditions. In the long run, this lack of economic awareness can contribute to poor financial planning, increased vulnerability, and reduced quality of life.

Despite the importance of economic awareness, there is a scarcity of empirical studies that specifically examine the level of awareness of inflation among secondary school teachers and students and how this awareness relates to household welfare in Nigeria. Most existing studies focus on macroeconomic indicators without considering the role of education and awareness at the micro level.

Therefore, the problem of this study lies in the inadequate understanding of inflation among teachers and students and the limited knowledge of how this affects household welfare. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing the level of awareness of inflation and examining its effects on household welfare among secondary school teachers and students in Nigeria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine teachers’ and students’ awareness of inflation and its effects on household welfare in secondary schools in Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Assess the level of awareness of inflation among secondary school teachers.
2. Examine the level of awareness of inflation among secondary school students.
3. Investigate the perceived effects of inflation on household welfare.
4. Determine the relationship between awareness of inflation and understanding of household welfare.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What is the level of awareness of inflation among secondary school teachers?

3. How does inflation affect household welfare?
4. What relationship exists between awareness of inflation and household welfare understanding?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between teachers’ and students’ awareness of inflation and their understanding of household welfare in secondary schools in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to:

• Teachers, by highlighting the need for improved economic knowledge and teaching methods.
• Students, by enhancing their understanding of real-life economic issues.
• Policy makers, in designing curriculum improvements and economic education policies.
• Researchers, by contributing to literature on economic literacy and education.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on secondary school teachers and students in selected schools in Nigeria. It examines awareness of inflation and its effects on household welfare within the context of economic education.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Inflation: A sustained increase in the general price level of goods and services.
• Awareness: The level of knowledge and understanding of a particular concept.
• Household Welfare: The standard of living and well-being of a household.
