INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Today’s educational landscape is increasingly shaped by technological advancement, prompting a shift from traditional teaching methods to more innovative and technology‑driven instructional approaches. Among the tools transforming this space are e‑instruction tools—software, applications, and digital platforms designed to support teaching and learning processes. E‑instruction tools include, but are not limited to, learning management systems (LMS), educational apps, interactive whiteboards, and digital assessment tools. These tools have been recognized globally for their potential to enrich instructional delivery, stimulate learner engagement, and ultimately enhance learning outcomes (Al‑Zahrani, 2019).
In many parts of the world, including Sub‑Saharan Africa, the integration of e‑instruction tools into classrooms has been both a response to and a challenge of educational modernization. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has adopted policies encouraging digital literacy and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in education in order to bridge performance gaps and prepare learners for a knowledge‑driven economy (Federal Ministry of Education, 2020). However, the success of these strategies depends not only on infrastructure and policy, but critically on teachers’ perceptions and attitudes toward technology. Teachers are frontline implementers; their acceptance of e‑instruction tools influences how these tools are used, the quality of instruction delivered, and how students interact with learning materials.
Globally, studies have shown that teachers’ perceptions significantly affect the adoption and effective use of instructional technologies. Some teachers incorporate digital tools to make lessons more interactive and tailored, while others rarely use them, citing constraints such as lack of training, inadequate resources, or negative perceptions about technology’s role in education.
Understanding teachers’ perceptions of e‑instruction tools is therefore vital for educational stakeholders. If teachers hold positive perceptions and believe these tools can improve student engagement and outcomes, there is a greater likelihood of sustained and effective integration. On the other hand, negative perceptions may hinder ongoing implementation efforts and widen the existing performance gap. This study explores these perceptions and examines how they relate to learning outcomes in public primary schools within Agege LGA. By focusing on teachers’ perceptions, the study contributes to broader efforts to improve basic education through technology‑enhanced learning.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite policy frameworks and investments aimed at integrating e‑instruction tools into Nigeria’s basic education system, evidence suggests that the anticipated improvements in student learning outcomes have been inconsistent and unevenly distributed across schools. In public primary schools in Agege LGA, anecdotal reports and preliminary observations indicate that while some teachers enthusiastically adopt digital tools to enrich instruction and engage learners, others remain hesitant or resistant. Some educators report difficulties in using software platforms, poor internet connectivity, limited access to devices, and insufficient training—factors that shape their perception of e‑instruction tools as burdensome rather than beneficial. This variability in perceptions raises questions about the extent to which teachers believe e‑instruction tools are valuable, and how these beliefs influence classroom practices and learning outcomes.
Research indicates that teacher perception is a key determinant of technology adoption and sustained use in educational settings (Teo, 2018). Without clear understanding of teachers’ attitudes toward e‑instruction tools, policymakers and educational planners risk implementing strategies that do not fully address the needs, concerns, and professional development requirements of teachers. As a result, investments in digital instructional resources may not yield the expected improvements in student achievement.
Thus, this study seeks to investigate the nature of teachers’ perceptions regarding e‑instruction tools and to determine whether these perceptions contribute to enhanced learning outcomes in public primary schools in Agege LGA, Lagos State. Findings from this study are expected to inform training programs, resource allocation decisions, and the design of pedagogical interventions that leverage technology more effectively in primary education.
1.3 Research Objective
The main objective of this study is to examine teachers’ perception of e‑instruction tools in enhancing learning outcomes in public primary schools in Agege LGA, Lagos State.
1.4 Research Question
To guide the study, the following research question is posed:
- What is the relationship between teachers’ perceptions of e‑instruction tools and the learning outcomes of pupils in public primary schools in Agege LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between teachers’ perceptions of e‑instruction tools and learning outcomes in public primary schools in Agege LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. First, it provides empirical evidence on how teachers in public primary schools view the usefulness and relevance of e‑instruction tools, filling a knowledge gap in current literature on educational technology adoption in Nigerian basic education. Second, by linking perception to learning outcomes, the study offers insights for education policymakers, school administrators, and teacher training institutions on how to enhance professional development and improve support systems. Ultimately, findings could contribute to more effective deployment of instructional technologies that positively impact student performance.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on public primary schools within Agege LGA, Lagos State. It assesses teachers’ perceptions regarding e‑instruction tools and examines how these perceptions relate to pupils’ learning outcomes. The study is limited to in‑service teachers and selected academic performance metrics relevant to basic literacy and numeracy.
