Project – Teachers’ Reinforcement Strategies and Classroom Behaviour Management Among Selected Primary Schools’ Pupils in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education plays a vital role in the social, intellectual, emotional, and moral development of children. At the primary school level, pupils acquire foundational knowledge, attitudes, habits, and behavioural patterns that shape their future academic and social lives. Effective teaching and learning can only take place in an environment where discipline, orderliness, cooperation, and positive behaviour are maintained. Consequently, classroom behaviour management has become an important aspect of the teaching and learning process in primary schools.

Classroom behaviour management refers to the methods, strategies, and techniques teachers use to maintain discipline, control disruptive behaviour, and create a conducive learning environment in the classroom. According to Emmer and Stough (2001), classroom management involves teachers’ actions aimed at establishing and sustaining an orderly environment that supports students’ academic and social development. Effective classroom behaviour management ensures that pupils remain attentive, cooperative, respectful, and actively engaged in learning activities.

One of the major strategies teachers use in managing pupils’ behaviour is reinforcement. Reinforcement refers to any stimulus or consequence that strengthens or increases the likelihood of a desired behaviour being repeated. The concept of reinforcement originated from the behavioural learning theory developed by B. F. Skinner. Skinner (1953) explained that behaviour can be influenced through rewards and consequences. Positive reinforcement involves rewarding desirable behaviour to encourage its repetition, while negative reinforcement involves removing unpleasant conditions when desirable behaviour occurs.

Teachers use different reinforcement strategies in the classroom to encourage good behaviour among pupils. These strategies include verbal praise, gifts, clapping, recognition, good remarks, encouragement, tokens, stars, and other forms of rewards. Reinforcement strategies are important because they motivate pupils to behave appropriately, participate actively in classroom activities, obey school rules, and improve academic performance. Pupils who receive encouragement and recognition from teachers are more likely to develop positive attitudes towards learning and school activities.

Primary school pupils are at a developmental stage where their behaviour is highly influenced by external factors such as rewards, punishment, peer relationships, and teacher attitudes. Effective reinforcement strategies help pupils understand acceptable behaviour and encourage them to develop self-control, discipline, and respect for authority. Conversely, ineffective classroom management may lead to disruptive behaviours such as noise-making, fighting, disobedience, truancy, bullying, inattentiveness, and poor academic engagement.

In many Nigerian primary schools, teachers face challenges in maintaining discipline and managing pupils’ behaviour in the classroom. Increasing cases of indiscipline, aggression, disrespect, and lack of concentration among pupils have become concerns for teachers, parents, and school administrators. Some teachers rely heavily on punishment and harsh disciplinary measures rather than positive reinforcement strategies. Excessive punishment may create fear, resentment, emotional instability, and negative attitudes toward learning among pupils.

Research has shown that reinforcement strategies significantly influence pupils’ behaviour and learning outcomes. According to Woolfolk (2010), positive reinforcement improves classroom participation, academic motivation, and appropriate social behaviour among pupils. Similarly, Albert and Troutman (2013) observed that reinforcement strategies are effective tools for reducing disruptive behaviour and promoting positive classroom conduct.

The classroom environment plays a major role in pupils’ academic and behavioural development. A well-managed classroom encourages cooperation, concentration, and effective learning, while a poorly managed classroom may result in chaos, distraction, poor academic performance, and antisocial behaviour. Teachers who effectively apply reinforcement strategies are more likely to establish peaceful and productive classrooms where pupils feel motivated and secure.

In Lagos State, particularly in Alimosho Local Government Area, many primary schools experience behavioural challenges among pupils. Cases of noise-making, fighting, lateness, disrespect for teachers, inattentiveness, and refusal to complete assignments are commonly observed in some schools. Teachers often struggle to maintain order and discipline due to large class sizes, inadequate teaching resources, and diverse behavioural backgrounds of pupils.

Furthermore, some teachers lack adequate knowledge of effective reinforcement strategies and classroom management techniques. Instead of using positive motivational methods, some teachers depend mainly on punishment, shouting, threats, and corporal discipline to control pupils’ behaviour. Such approaches may not effectively promote lasting behavioural change among pupils.

The importance of reinforcement strategies in shaping pupils’ behaviour cannot be overemphasized. Positive classroom behaviour management contributes significantly to pupils’ academic achievement, emotional stability, and social development. Therefore, there is a need to examine how teachers’ reinforcement strategies influence classroom behaviour management among primary school pupils.

This study therefore seeks to investigate teachers’ reinforcement strategies and classroom behaviour management among selected primary school pupils in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Classroom behaviour management is one of the major responsibilities of teachers in primary schools. Effective teaching and learning can only occur in an orderly and disciplined classroom environment where pupils demonstrate positive behaviour and cooperate with teachers and fellow pupils. However, managing pupils’ behaviour has become increasingly challenging in many primary schools in Nigeria.

In recent years, teachers in many primary schools have reported increasing cases of disruptive behaviour among pupils. Such behaviours include noise-making, fighting, bullying, disobedience, inattentiveness, truancy, refusal to complete assignments, and disrespect for teachers. These behaviours often interfere with effective teaching and learning, reduce classroom participation, and negatively affect pupils’ academic and social development.

One of the major factors influencing classroom behaviour management is the type of reinforcement strategies used by teachers. While some teachers use positive reinforcement such as praise, encouragement, rewards, and recognition to motivate pupils, others rely mainly on punishment, threats, and harsh disciplinary measures. Excessive dependence on punishment may create fear and resentment among pupils instead of encouraging positive behavioural change.

In many schools, some teachers lack adequate knowledge and training on effective classroom management and reinforcement techniques. Consequently, they may find it difficult to control disruptive behaviour and maintain discipline in the classroom. Poor classroom management may lead to an unconducive learning environment, low academic achievement, emotional instability among pupils, and reduced teacher effectiveness.

Furthermore, large class sizes, inadequate instructional materials, poor teacher-pupil relationships, and diverse behavioural backgrounds of pupils often make classroom management more difficult in public primary schools. In Alimosho Local Government Area, teachers face significant challenges in controlling pupils’ behaviour due to overcrowded classrooms and varying home environments of pupils.

Although previous studies have examined classroom management and pupils’ behaviour, there is still a need to specifically investigate the influence of teachers’ reinforcement strategies on classroom behaviour management among primary school pupils in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. This is important because effective reinforcement strategies may contribute significantly to discipline, cooperation, and positive learning behaviour among pupils.

The problem of this study therefore is to examine whether teachers’ reinforcement strategies significantly influence classroom behaviour management among selected primary school pupils in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State.
