INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Biology is a fundamental science subject that provides learners with systematic knowledge about living organisms, their structures, functions, interactions, and relationships with the environment. At the senior secondary school level, biology serves as a foundation for students pursuing careers in medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, environmental science, nursing, pharmacy, and other science-related disciplines. Beyond preparing students for professional careers, biology education contributes to scientific literacy by enabling individuals to understand health issues, environmental challenges, biodiversity conservation, and the biological processes that influence human existence. The relevance of biology to national development has made its effective teaching and learning a major concern in science education globally and particularly within the Nigerian educational system.
The importance of effective biology instruction is emphasized in the Nigerian National Policy on Education, which identifies science education as a means of developing scientific knowledge, problem-solving abilities, technological skills, and positive attitudes necessary for national growth (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2013). However, achieving these objectives requires instructional approaches that move beyond the traditional transmission of information and encourage learners to actively participate in the construction of knowledge. Biology, as an experimental science, requires learners to observe, investigate, manipulate materials, conduct practical activities, and relate scientific concepts to real-life experiences.
Despite the significance of biology education, students’ academic performance in the subject has remained a major concern among educators, researchers, and educational stakeholders. Many students experience difficulties understanding biological concepts because classroom instruction often focuses heavily on memorization of facts, definitions, and theories without adequate practical engagement. Concepts such as genetics, ecology, evolution, reproduction, and physiological processes involve complex relationships that require meaningful experiences for proper understanding. When students learn biology only through verbal explanations and textbook descriptions, they may struggle to connect abstract ideas with real-world applications.
The persistence of teacher-centred instructional methods has contributed to challenges in biology learning. In many secondary schools, biology teaching is still dominated by lecture methods where teachers explain concepts while students listen, take notes, and reproduce information during examinations. Although this approach may assist teachers in covering large amounts of curriculum content, it provides limited opportunities for students to explore, investigate, and develop scientific process skills. According to John Dewey (1938), meaningful education occurs when learners interact actively with experiences rather than simply receive information from instructors.
One instructional approach that addresses the limitations of passive learning is experiential learning. Experiential learning is an educational process where learners acquire knowledge and skills through direct experiences, reflection, conceptual understanding, and application. The approach emphasizes learning by doing and encourages students to actively participate in activities that connect classroom concepts with practical situations. David Kolb (1984) conceptualized experiential learning as a cycle involving concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. According to Kolb, effective learning occurs when students engage with experiences, reflect on them, develop ideas from those experiences, and apply their knowledge to new situations.
In biology education, experiential learning strategies may include field trips, laboratory investigations, nature studies, specimen collection, environmental observations, project-based activities, demonstrations, simulations, and practical problem-solving tasks. These strategies expose students to real biological materials and situations, enabling them to develop deeper understanding and scientific skills. Rather than memorizing biological information, students participate actively in discovering biological principles through observation and investigation.
The theoretical foundation of experiential learning is closely connected to constructivist learning theory, which views learners as active participants in the creation of knowledge. Constructivists argue that students do not simply absorb information provided by teachers; rather, they construct understanding through interaction with their environment and previous experiences. Jean Piaget (1972) emphasized that learners develop cognitive structures through active engagement with their surroundings. Similarly, Lev Vygotsky (1978) highlighted the importance of social interaction, collaboration, and guided experiences in the learning process.
Experiential learning strategies are particularly relevant to biology because biological knowledge is closely connected to observable phenomena in the natural environment. For example, students studying ecology can understand environmental relationships more effectively through field investigations than through classroom explanations alone. Similarly, concepts related to plant structures, animal adaptations, biodiversity, and conservation become more meaningful when students observe actual examples. Direct experiences provide opportunities for students to develop curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and scientific reasoning.
Research evidence has shown that experiential learning approaches can improve students’ academic achievement in biology. For instance, Okoli and Abonyi (2014) found that students taught biology using experiential learning strategies performed better than those taught using conventional expository methods. The researchers argued that experiential learning enhances students’ participation and enables them to relate biological concepts to practical situations. Similarly, Nwuba and Osuafor (2021) reported that experiential learning approaches significantly improved secondary school students’ achievement in biology compared with conventional teaching methods.
Recent studies have continued to support the effectiveness of experiential learning in Nigerian biology classrooms. A study by Offor and Nwankwo (2025) on secondary school students’ academic achievement in biology found that students exposed to experiential learning approaches significantly outperformed students taught through conventional lecture methods. Another study examining experiential learning and problem-solving strategies among biology students in Nigerian secondary schools reported positive effects on academic performance when compared with traditional instructional approaches. These findings suggest that experiential learning strategies can contribute significantly to improving biology education outcomes.
Teachers play a crucial role in determining whether experiential learning strategies are successfully implemented in schools. Although experiential learning provides opportunities for active student participation, its effectiveness depends largely on teachers’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and willingness to adopt innovative instructional methods. Biology teachers are expected to design learning experiences that encourage investigation, collaboration, reflection, and application of knowledge. Therefore, teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies becomes an important factor influencing students’ academic performance in biology.
Teacher utilization of instructional strategies refers to the extent to which teachers apply specific teaching approaches, techniques, and learning activities in classroom practice. Effective utilization requires teachers to understand the principles underlying instructional strategies and adapt them according to learners’ needs and available resources. In the context of experiential learning, teachers must move from being information providers to facilitators of learning experiences. They are expected to create opportunities where students actively explore biological concepts through practical engagement.
However, evidence suggests that many biology teachers still experience challenges in implementing experiential learning strategies. Factors such as inadequate laboratory facilities, large class sizes, insufficient instructional materials, limited professional development opportunities, examination pressures, and lack of administrative support may discourage teachers from adopting experience-based approaches. Consequently, many students continue to receive biology instruction through methods that provide limited practical exposure.
The situation is significant in public secondary schools within Owerri Education Zone of Imo State, where biology remains an important subject for students preparing for higher education and science-related careers. Although schools have qualified biology teachers, concerns remain regarding the extent to which innovative instructional approaches are utilized in classroom practice. Limited application of experiential learning strategies may affect students’ ability to develop scientific skills, understand biological concepts, and achieve better academic outcomes.
The effectiveness of biology teaching depends not only on curriculum content but also on how teachers present learning experiences to students. When teachers utilize experiential learning strategies effectively, students are likely to become more interested, motivated, and actively engaged in learning. Active involvement may lead to improved comprehension, higher academic achievement, and better retention of biological knowledge.
Therefore, investigating teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies and students’ academic performance in biology is necessary. Such a study will provide evidence regarding whether teachers’ application of experiential approaches contributes significantly to students’ learning outcomes. The findings may assist biology teachers, school administrators, curriculum planners, and policymakers in developing strategies for improving biology instruction in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone, Imo State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Biology is one of the core science subjects taught at the senior secondary school level because of its relevance to individual development, scientific advancement, and national transformation. The subject is expected to equip students with knowledge of living organisms, environmental processes, health-related issues, and scientific skills required for further studies and professional development. However, despite its importance, students’ academic performance in Biology has continued to attract concern among education stakeholders in Nigeria. Many students demonstrate inadequate understanding of biological concepts, poor problem-solving abilities, and limited ability to apply biological knowledge to practical situations.
One major factor associated with poor achievement in Biology is the dominance of conventional teaching methods that emphasize teacher explanations, note-taking, memorization, and examination preparation. Although traditional methods may enable teachers to deliver large amounts of content within a short period, they often limit students’ active participation in the learning process. Biology, being an experimental and practical science subject, requires students to engage in observation, investigation, experimentation, and direct interaction with biological materials. When students are denied these opportunities, learning may become abstract, difficult, and less meaningful.
The challenge of ineffective instructional practices has become more significant because many biological concepts require experiences that cannot be fully achieved through verbal explanations alone. For example, understanding ecological relationships, biodiversity, adaptation, plant and animal structures, and environmental processes requires students to observe, manipulate, and investigate real biological situations. When teachers rely mainly on theoretical approaches, students may memorize information temporarily for examinations but fail to develop lasting understanding and retention of biological concepts.
Experiential learning strategies have been identified as possible solutions to these challenges because they provide students with opportunities to learn through direct experiences. Through activities such as field studies, laboratory practicals, projects, demonstrations, environmental investigations, and collaborative problem-solving, students become actively involved in constructing knowledge. However, despite the recognized benefits of experiential learning, its utilization among biology teachers in Nigerian public secondary schools appears inadequate.
The problem may not necessarily be the absence of experiential learning strategies but rather the extent to which biology teachers understand, adopt, and effectively implement them in classroom situations. Some teachers may lack adequate knowledge of experiential learning principles, while others may be constrained by factors such as inadequate instructional resources, large class sizes, limited instructional time, examination-oriented teaching practices, and insufficient professional training. These challenges may prevent teachers from creating meaningful learning experiences that enhance students’ achievement in Biology.
Furthermore, there appears to be a gap between educational recommendations and classroom realities. Educational policies encourage learner-centred and activity-based approaches to science teaching, yet many biology classrooms remain dominated by teacher-directed instruction. This gap raises questions regarding the extent to which teachers utilize experiential learning strategies and whether such utilization has any measurable influence on students’ academic performance.
Previous studies have examined various innovative teaching approaches in science education, including inquiry-based learning, cooperative learning, and problem-solving strategies. However, limited attention has been given specifically to teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies and their relationship with students’ academic performance in Biology, particularly in public secondary schools within Owerri Education Zone of Imo State. This creates a need for empirical investigation into the extent of teachers’ application of experiential learning strategies and their influence on students’ academic outcomes.
Therefore, the problem of this study is that despite the importance of Biology and the need for effective instructional strategies, many students continue to experience difficulties achieving satisfactory academic performance. It is uncertain whether the level of teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies contributes significantly to students’ achievement in Biology. This study, therefore, seeks to determine the relationship between teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies and students’ academic performance in Biology among public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone, Imo State.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The main aim of this study is to investigate teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies and students’ academic performance in Biology among public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone, Imo State.
Specifically, the study seeks to determine the extent to which biology teachers utilize experiential learning strategies and examine whether such utilization influences students’ academic performance in Biology.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of the study are to:
- determine the extent to which Biology teachers utilize experiential learning strategies in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone, Imo State;
- identify the types of experiential learning strategies utilized by Biology teachers in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone;
- examine the level of students’ academic performance in Biology in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone;
- determine the relationship between teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies and students’ academic performance in Biology;
- investigate the challenges affecting Biology teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone.
1.5 Research Questions
The following research questions guided the study:
- To what extent do Biology teachers utilize experiential learning strategies in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone, Imo State?
- What types of experiential learning strategies are utilized by Biology teachers in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone?
- What is the level of students’ academic performance in Biology in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone?
- What relationship exists between teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies and students’ academic performance in Biology?
- What challenges affect Biology teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies in public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies and students’ academic performance in Biology among public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone, Imo State.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be significant to Biology students, Biology teachers, school administrators, curriculum developers, policymakers, and future researchers.
Biology Students
The study will benefit students by highlighting the importance of active involvement in the learning process. When teachers utilize experiential learning strategies effectively, students are exposed to practical experiences that make biological concepts easier to understand. Experiential activities can improve students’ interest, motivation, scientific reasoning, creativity, and ability to apply biological knowledge to real-life situations. Improved understanding may ultimately contribute to higher academic performance.
Biology Teachers
The findings will provide Biology teachers with information on the effectiveness of experiential learning strategies and their relevance in improving students’ academic outcomes. The study may encourage teachers to adopt more learner-centred approaches such as laboratory investigations, field activities, biological projects, demonstrations, and practical problem-solving tasks. It will also help teachers identify areas where they require additional training and support for effective implementation of experiential learning.
School Administrators
The study will be useful to principals and school administrators by providing evidence on the importance of supporting innovative teaching approaches. The findings may encourage administrators to provide necessary instructional materials, improve laboratory facilities, organize teacher development programmes, and create an environment that supports effective Biology teaching.
Curriculum Planners and Educational Policymakers
The findings will provide useful information for curriculum planners and educational policymakers regarding the need to strengthen experiential and activity-based approaches in science education. Since modern science education emphasizes inquiry, creativity, and practical application of knowledge, the study may contribute to efforts aimed at improving Biology instruction in Nigerian secondary schools.

The study will contribute to existing literature on teaching strategies and science education. Researchers interested in instructional innovation, teacher effectiveness, and students’ academic achievement may use the findings as a reference for further studies.
1.8 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies and students’ academic performance in Biology among public secondary schools in Owerri Education Zone, Imo State.
The study is delimited to Biology teachers and senior secondary school students offering Biology in selected public secondary schools within Owerri Education Zone. The study examines experiential learning strategies such as practical activities, laboratory investigations, field trips, project-based learning, demonstrations, and collaborative learning activities.
The independent variable of the study is teachers’ utilization of experiential learning strategies, while the dependent variable is students’ academic performance in Biology.
Geographically, the study is limited to public secondary schools located within Owerri Education Zone of Imo State, Nigeria.

Teachers’ Utilization
Teachers’ utilization refers to the extent to which Biology teachers apply instructional strategies, methods, and activities in the teaching and learning process.
Experiential Learning Strategies
