Project – The Challenges of Maintaining Doctrinal Integrity in Contemporary Nigerian Churches
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Doctrinal integrity is fundamental to the identity, mission, and continuity of the Christian Church. Doctrine provides the theological foundation upon which Christian beliefs, practices, and moral values are built. It shapes worship, guides preaching and teaching, and ensures that the Church remains faithful to biblical truth as handed down through Scripture and Christian tradition. The New Testament repeatedly emphasizes the importance of sound doctrine, warning believers against false teachings and distortions of the gospel (1 Timothy 4:16; Titus 1:9).
In the contemporary era, the Christian Church operates within rapidly changing social, cultural, and technological environments. Globalization, secularism, digital media, and changing moral values have significantly influenced religious expression worldwide. In Nigeria, these changes are particularly pronounced due to urbanization, economic pressures, youth culture, and intense religious competition. As a result, churches are increasingly challenged to remain doctrinally sound while responding to the expectations of modern congregations.
Nigeria is one of the most religiously vibrant countries in the world, with Christianity playing a major role in shaping social and moral life. Lagos State, as Nigeria’s commercial and cultural center, hosts a wide variety of Christian denominations, ranging from mainline churches to Pentecostal and charismatic movements. This diversity has encouraged creativity and growth but has also intensified doctrinal debates and theological tensions among churches (Ojo, 2006).
Contemporary Nigerian churches often face pressure to adapt their teachings to attract and retain members. Prosperity theology, miracle-centered preaching, prophetic declarations, and motivational messages have become popular in many churches. While these teachings resonate with the socio-economic realities of many Nigerians, critics argue that they sometimes overshadow core Christian doctrines such as repentance, holiness, salvation, and discipleship (Gaiya, 2014). This situation raises serious concerns about doctrinal compromise and theological imbalance.
Furthermore, the rise of independent church founders and self-styled prophets has contributed to doctrinal inconsistency. In some cases, personal revelations, visions, and prophetic claims are elevated above Scripture, leading to subjective interpretations of biblical truth. The absence of formal theological training among some church leaders has also been identified as a factor contributing to doctrinal errors and misrepresentation of Christian teachings (Ukah, 2008).
Maintaining doctrinal integrity is further complicated by the influence of social media and digital platforms. Sermons, prophecies, and teachings are now widely circulated online, often without theological accountability or oversight. While digital media has enhanced evangelism and outreach, it has also facilitated the spread of doctrinal distortions and sensationalism.
This study therefore examines the challenges of maintaining doctrinal integrity in contemporary Nigerian churches, using five selected churches in Lagos State as case studies. By focusing on Lagos, the study captures the complexities of doctrinal preservation in a highly urbanized, religiously competitive, and culturally diverse environment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the centrality of sound doctrine to Christian faith and practice, many contemporary Nigerian churches are confronted with serious challenges in maintaining doctrinal integrity. While churches continue to grow numerically and expand their influence, questions remain regarding the theological depth and biblical accuracy of their teachings.
One major problem is the increasing tendency to prioritize popularity, church growth, and material success over doctrinal faithfulness. Teachings that promise instant breakthroughs, miracles, and prosperity often attract large congregations but may lack solid biblical grounding. This trend has raised concerns about the dilution of core Christian doctrines and the emergence of distorted interpretations of Scripture.
Another concern is the rise of doctrinal pluralism within Christianity in Nigeria. With limited regulatory or theological oversight, churches often develop doctrines based on personal convictions of leaders rather than established biblical principles. This has resulted in conflicting teachings on salvation, holiness, spiritual authority, and Christian ethics, leading to confusion among believers.
Additionally, inadequate theological education and weak accountability structures among church leaders have contributed to doctrinal inconsistencies. In some churches, members lack sufficient biblical knowledge to discern sound doctrine from error, making them vulnerable to manipulation and false teachings.
Despite these challenges, there is limited empirical research that critically examines how Nigerian churches struggle with doctrinal integrity, particularly within urban contexts like Lagos State. Most existing studies focus on church growth or Pentecostal expansion, with little attention to doctrinal faithfulness and theological sustainability.
The problem this study seeks to address is the limited scholarly understanding of the challenges facing contemporary Nigerian churches in maintaining doctrinal integrity. By examining five selected churches in Lagos State, this study aims to identify the factors contributing to doctrinal compromise and explore strategies for sustaining biblical soundness in modern church practice.
