INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Marriage is a sacred institution in Christianity and is often regarded as a covenant ordained by God for companionship, procreation, and moral guidance. Within the context of Christian ministry, particularly in Pentecostal traditions, the marital life of clergy is not only a personal matter but also a public concern that significantly influences their spiritual authority, moral credibility, and effectiveness in ministry. Clergy are often seen as role models whose personal lives are expected to reflect biblical teachings and values (1 Timothy 3:2–5; Titus 1:6).

In many Pentecostal churches, pastors and church leaders are expected to maintain exemplary family lives as part of their spiritual calling. The stability of a clergy’s marriage is often associated with their ability to lead, counsel, and guide members of the congregation effectively. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing occurrence of marital challenges among clergy, including separation, divorce, and remarriage. These developments have raised important questions about their impact on pastoral effectiveness and church growth.

In Nigeria, Pentecostal Christianity has experienced rapid growth, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas such as Gwagwalada within the Abuja. This growth is characterized by vibrant worship, strong leadership structures, and emphasis on personal spirituality and moral conduct. Within this context, clergy are highly visible figures whose personal lives are closely observed by their congregants.

Clergy marriage and remarriage can have profound implications for pastoral effectiveness. A stable marriage may enhance a pastor’s credibility, emotional stability, and ability to provide guidance on family-related issues. Conversely, marital instability or remarriage—especially following divorce—may raise concerns among church members regarding the clergy’s adherence to biblical principles and moral standards. Some denominations interpret scriptural teachings strictly, discouraging or prohibiting remarriage for clergy, while others adopt more flexible approaches based on grace and restoration (Matthew 19:9; 1 Corinthians 7:15).

Pastoral effectiveness refers to the ability of clergy to fulfill their ministerial responsibilities, including preaching, counseling, leadership, evangelism, and spiritual mentorship. It also encompasses the capacity to influence the spiritual growth and well-being of church members. Congregational growth, on the other hand, involves both numerical increase in church membership and qualitative development in terms of spiritual maturity, participation, and commitment.

The relationship between clergy marital status and congregational growth is complex. While some congregations may support and accept clergy who remarry, others may experience division, reduced trust, or declining participation. In certain cases, remarriage may bring renewed stability and improved leadership, while in others, it may lead to controversy and conflict within the church.

Despite the importance of this issue, there is limited empirical research focusing specifically on the effect of clergy marriage and remarriage on pastoral effectiveness and congregational growth within Pentecostal churches in Gwagwalada, Abuja. Most existing studies address clergy well-being or church growth independently, without adequately examining the intersection between marital life and ministerial performance.

This study, therefore, seeks to examine the effect of clergy marriage and remarriage on pastoral effectiveness and congregational growth, with a focus on selected Pentecostal churches in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increasing occurrence of marital challenges among clergy in Pentecostal churches has raised concerns about their potential impact on pastoral effectiveness and congregational growth. While clergy are expected to uphold high moral and spiritual standards, the realities of marital instability, divorce, and remarriage have introduced complexities that affect both their personal lives and ministerial roles.

One of the major problems is the perceived conflict between biblical expectations and contemporary realities. Many church members expect clergy to maintain lifelong marriages, as emphasized in scriptural teachings. However, when clergy experience marital breakdown or choose to remarry, it may lead to questions about their spiritual integrity and qualification for leadership. This perception can undermine their authority and effectiveness in ministry.

Another significant issue is the impact of clergy marital situations on congregational attitudes and behavior. Members may react differently to clergy remarriage, ranging from acceptance and support to criticism and withdrawal. In some cases, controversies surrounding clergy marital status may lead to divisions within the church, reduced attendance, and even the formation of splinter groups.

Additionally, pastoral effectiveness may be affected by the emotional and psychological stress associated with marital challenges. Clergy undergoing marital difficulties may struggle to balance personal issues with ministerial responsibilities, leading to reduced performance in preaching, counseling, and leadership. On the other hand, remarriage may either restore stability or introduce new complexities depending on the circumstances.

Furthermore, there is a lack of clear and consistent policies across Pentecostal churches regarding clergy marriage and remarriage. Different denominations and congregations interpret biblical teachings differently, resulting in varying expectations and practices. This inconsistency can create confusion among both clergy and congregants.

Another critical problem is the limited availability of empirical data on how clergy marriage and remarriage specifically affect pastoral effectiveness and congregational growth in Gwagwalada, Abuja. Existing studies often focus on broader issues without addressing the unique dynamics within local Pentecostal communities.

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the insufficient understanding of how clergy marriage and remarriage influence pastoral effectiveness and congregational growth, particularly within selected Pentecostal churches in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How does clergy marriage affect pastoral effectiveness in Pentecostal churches?

3. How do clergy marital situations influence congregational growth?

4. What challenges do clergy face in balancing marital life and ministerial responsibilities?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of clergy marriage and remarriage on pastoral effectiveness and congregational growth.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Assess the influence of clergy marriage on pastoral effectiveness.

2. Examine the impact of clergy remarriage on congregational attitudes.

3. Analyze the relationship between clergy marital status and congregational growth.

4. Identify challenges faced by clergy in managing marital and ministerial roles.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Clergy marriage and remarriage have no significant effect on pastoral effectiveness and congregational growth in Pentecostal churches in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

H₁: Clergy marriage and remarriage have a significant effect on pastoral effectiveness and congregational growth in Pentecostal churches in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in the following ways:

1.7 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on selected Pentecostal churches in Gwagwalada, Abuja. It examines the relationship between clergy marriage, remarriage, pastoral effectiveness, and congregational growth.

The study is limited to Pentecostal churches and does not cover other Christian denominations. Time and resource constraints also limit the scope of the research.
