Project – The Effect of Employee Motivation on Performance: A Case Study of Access Bank Plc, Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Employee motivation is a critical factor in the performance and success of organizations. Motivation can be described as the internal drive that directs employees towards achieving organizational goals and personal development objectives (Robbins & Judge, 2019). In the banking sector, where performance efficiency and customer service are crucial, employee motivation plays a central role in ensuring competitive advantage and operational excellence.
Access Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks, operates in a highly competitive environment where employee performance directly affects customer satisfaction, profitability, and organizational sustainability. Motivated employees are more likely to be productive, innovative, and committed to achieving corporate objectives, whereas demotivated staff may exhibit low productivity, absenteeism, and poor customer service (Armstrong & Taylor, 2020).
Several theories of motivation, including Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory, and Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, emphasize that employees are influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors include personal growth, achievement, and recognition, while extrinsic factors encompass salary, bonuses, promotions, and work conditions (Luthans, 2011). In the Nigerian banking sector, employee motivation has become a strategic tool for enhancing performance, reducing turnover, and improving service quality.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of employee motivation in the banking industry, many organizations, including Access Bank Plc, continue to face challenges in fully motivating their workforce. Reports of high staff turnover, declining productivity, and customer complaints indicate that motivation strategies may not be consistently effective. While financial incentives are commonly used, they may not always address other motivational needs such as recognition, career development, and work-life balance. This gap raises the need to investigate the relationship between employee motivation and performance in Access Bank Plc, Lagos State.
