Project – The Effect of Examination Anxiety on Students’ Academic Achievement in Higher Institutions.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is universally recognized as one of the major instruments for national development and individual advancement. In higher institutions, students are expected to acquire knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, and demonstrate competence through various forms of assessment. Among these assessments, examinations remain one of the most widely used methods for evaluating students’ academic achievement. Examination performance often determines students’ academic progression, graduation status, scholarship opportunities, and future career prospects. Consequently, many students experience emotional tension and psychological pressure during examination periods.

Examination anxiety has become a common psychological issue among students in higher institutions across the world. It refers to a feeling of fear, worry, nervousness, or apprehension experienced before or during examinations. According to Spielberger (1972), examination anxiety is a psychological condition characterized by tension, nervousness, worry, and physiological reactions that occur in evaluative situations. It is often associated with fear of failure, low self-confidence, inadequate preparation, and pressure to perform well academically.

Academic achievement refers to the level of success attained by students in their educational pursuits, usually measured through examinations, tests, assignments, and cumulative grade point averages. Academic achievement is influenced by several factors including intelligence, study habits, motivation, learning environment, emotional stability, parental support, and psychological well-being. Among these factors, examination anxiety has increasingly attracted attention due to its negative impact on students’ academic performance and emotional health.

In higher institutions, students face different forms of academic pressure such as continuous assessments, semester examinations, deadlines for assignments, presentations, and competition for good grades. These academic demands may trigger anxiety, especially among students who lack confidence in their academic abilities. Moderate levels of anxiety may motivate students to study harder and remain focused, but excessive anxiety often interferes with concentration, memory retention, reasoning ability, and academic performance.

Examination anxiety manifests in different ways among students. Some students experience physical symptoms such as sweating, rapid heartbeat, headache, trembling, nausea, and insomnia, while others experience emotional symptoms such as fear, panic, frustration, and lack of confidence. Cognitive symptoms may include forgetfulness, confusion, poor concentration, and inability to recall previously studied information during examinations. These symptoms may negatively affect students’ ability to perform effectively during examinations.

Several factors contribute to examination anxiety among undergraduate students. These include poor preparation, fear of failure, parental expectations, peer competition, inadequate study habits, low self-esteem, and poor time management. In some cases, students become anxious because they perceive examinations as threats to their academic future. Financial challenges, overcrowded classrooms, unstable academic calendars, and fear of disappointing parents or sponsors may further intensify examination anxiety among university students.

The increasing competitiveness in higher education has made academic success a major concern among undergraduates. Many students strive to achieve high grades in order to secure scholarships, postgraduate admission opportunities, and employment after graduation. As a result, examination periods are often associated with emotional stress and psychological instability. Students who experience high levels of examination anxiety may perform below their actual intellectual abilities because anxiety disrupts effective thinking and recall processes during examinations.

Researchers have established a relationship between examination anxiety and academic achievement. Zeidner (1998) observed that students with high examination anxiety often demonstrate lower academic performance compared to students with lower anxiety levels. Similarly, Cassady and Johnson (2002) found that cognitive examination anxiety negatively affects students’ academic achievement by interfering with attention and memory processes. Students who experience severe anxiety during examinations may forget answers they had previously studied, misunderstand questions, or become mentally blocked during tests.

In Nigeria, examination anxiety among university students has become a growing concern among educators, psychologists, parents, and school administrators. The pressure to excel academically, coupled with societal expectations and economic challenges, contributes significantly to students’ emotional instability during examinations. Undergraduate students in Nigerian universities often face intense academic workloads, frequent assessments, and concerns about academic survival, all of which may increase anxiety levels.

The University of Lagos is one of the leading higher institutions in Nigeria with a large population of undergraduate students from diverse social and academic backgrounds. Students in the university encounter academic competition, demanding coursework, and pressure to maintain satisfactory academic performance. These challenges may expose many students to varying degrees of examination anxiety, which could ultimately influence their academic achievement.

Observations among undergraduate students indicate that many students become nervous, emotionally unstable, and psychologically distressed during examination periods. Some students lose confidence in themselves, while others experience fear and panic despite adequate preparation. In some cases, examination anxiety may lead to poor examination performance, examination malpractice, absenteeism, and reduced academic motivation.

Despite several studies on examination anxiety, there is still a need to further examine its effect on students’ academic achievement within specific institutional contexts such as the University of Lagos. This is important because students’ experiences, learning environments, and academic pressures may vary from one institution to another.

Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the effect of examination anxiety on students’ academic achievement among undergraduate students of the University of Lagos.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Examinations remain one of the major methods used for assessing students’ knowledge and academic competence in higher institutions. However, many undergraduate students experience anxiety before and during examinations, which may negatively affect their academic achievement. Examination anxiety has become a common psychological problem among university students, particularly in highly competitive academic environments.

In recent years, there has been increasing concern about the emotional and psychological challenges faced by undergraduate students during examination periods. Many students experience fear, tension, nervousness, panic, and emotional instability whenever examinations approach. Some students who prepare adequately for examinations still perform poorly because anxiety interferes with their concentration, memory recall, and reasoning abilities during tests.

In Nigerian universities, including the University of Lagos, students are often exposed to intense academic pressure arising from continuous assessments, semester examinations, demanding coursework, fear of failure, and parental expectations. These pressures may contribute significantly to high levels of examination anxiety among undergraduates. Some students experience sleepless nights, emotional distress, low self-confidence, and poor study habits during examination periods.

Furthermore, examination anxiety may result in negative consequences such as poor academic performance, reduced self-esteem, loss of motivation, examination malpractice, absenteeism, and even withdrawal from academic activities. Students with severe anxiety may find it difficult to express what they have studied during examinations despite possessing adequate knowledge of the subject matter.

Although previous studies have examined examination anxiety among students, many studies have focused on secondary school students while limited attention has been given to undergraduate students in higher institutions within Lagos State. In addition, the academic environment and psychological experiences of university students differ significantly from those of secondary school students. Therefore, there is a need to investigate how examination anxiety affects academic achievement among undergraduate students of the University of Lagos.

The problem of this study therefore is to examine whether examination anxiety significantly affects the academic achievement of undergraduate students in the University of Lagos.
