Project – The Effect Of Learning Style On The Academics Performance Of Senior Secondary School Students

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely recognized as a vital instrument for both personal growth and national development. The academic performance of students serves as one of the key indicators used to measure the effectiveness of an educational system. A well-performing student population reflects positively on the quality of instruction, curriculum relevance, and institutional effectiveness. However, academic success is influenced by a variety of factors, including the learners’ cognitive abilities, motivation, teaching quality, and increasingly, their individual learning styles. As such, understanding how students learn is becoming a focal point in educational research and practice.

Learning styles refer to the consistent ways in which individuals prefer to absorb, process, and retain new information. These preferences vary significantly from one student to another, affecting how they comprehend lessons, interact with educational materials, and demonstrate understanding. Recognizing and addressing these differences has been identified as a strategy for improving student engagement and achievement. While some students learn best through listening (auditory), others might prefer reading and writing, observing visuals, or engaging in hands-on activities. Tailoring educational experiences to suit these preferences can help reduce learning barriers and enhance performance.

Two of the most commonly applied models for categorizing learning styles are the VARK model and Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory. The VARK model classifies learners into four types: Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic. Each type has distinct preferences for how information is best delivered and retained. Kolb’s model, on the other hand, identifies four learning styles based on how individuals perceive and process experiences: convergers, divergers, assimilators, and accommodators. These models provide practical frameworks for educators to assess and understand learner diversity in their classrooms.

In the Nigerian context, particularly at the senior secondary school level, the classroom environment often reflects a one-size-fits-all approach. Most public schools still rely heavily on traditional teaching methods that prioritize rote memorization and lecture-based instruction. These methods do not adequately accommodate the variety of learning preferences that exist among students. As a result, many students may find it difficult to engage fully with the curriculum, potentially leading to poor academic performance. Bridging this gap requires a shift towards more inclusive and differentiated teaching strategies that align with diverse learning styles.

Moreover, Nigerian students come from a variety of cultural, socio-economic, and linguistic backgrounds, further influencing their learning behaviors and needs. Students who are not taught in ways that suit their individual styles may struggle not because they lack intelligence, but because the instructional delivery fails to connect with them effectively. Consequently, it becomes important for educators, policymakers, and researchers to identify the learning style distribution among students and investigate its correlation with academic outcomes. This knowledge can help inform more effective teaching strategies and curriculum planning.

Therefore, this study aims to explore the effect of learning styles on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Nigeria. By identifying the most common learning styles and analyzing how they relate to academic achievement, the research seeks to provide insights that can help teachers adapt their instructional techniques. Ultimately, the goal is to support improved learning experiences and academic success for all students, regardless of their preferred learning modality.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Academic achievement among senior secondary school students remains a critical concern in Nigeria’s education system. Despite ongoing reforms, curriculum reviews, and investments in infrastructure and teacher training, student performance in key subjects such as Mathematics, English Language, and the sciences continues to be erratic and, in many cases, disappointing. Public examination results often reveal significant percentages of students failing to meet the minimum pass requirements. This suggests that there are underlying issues beyond content delivery that hinder optimal learning outcomes.

One major area of concern is the instructional method commonly employed in secondary schools. Most teachers rely heavily on conventional teaching techniques such as lectures and note-taking, which assume a uniform mode of learning across all students. These traditional methods often cater to a limited range of learning preferences, typically favoring auditory and reading/writing learners. However, classrooms are increasingly diverse, comprising students with a wide range of learning styles, including visual and kinesthetic learners who may not thrive under standard teaching practices.

The disconnect between teaching styles and student learning preferences can result in poor classroom engagement and limited comprehension. Students who do not receive instruction in a manner that aligns with their natural learning tendencies may struggle to understand and retain information. This can lead to frustration, disinterest in schoolwork, and ultimately, poor academic performance. The consequence is not only reflected in examination results but also in students’ attitudes toward education and their overall confidence in learning.

Furthermore, the problem is exacerbated by the lack of awareness among many educators regarding the importance of learning styles. Teachers are often not trained to identify or adapt to the varied learning needs of their students. In many cases, classroom instruction is delivered in a generalized format, with little consideration for differentiated learning. Without the integration of flexible teaching methods that respond to students’ learning styles, the education system risks marginalizing a significant portion of the student population.

Given these challenges, it becomes imperative to investigate how learning styles influence academic performance among senior secondary school students. This study seeks to bridge that gap by assessing whether students’ preferred learning styles have a measurable impact on their academic achievements. If a significant relationship is established, it could serve as a basis for recommending more inclusive instructional strategies, thereby enhancing educational equity and improving learning outcomes across diverse student populations.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to examine the effect of learning styles on the academic performance of senior secondary school students. The specific objectives are to:

  1. Identify the predominant learning styles among senior secondary school students.
  2. Assess the academic performance of students with different learning styles.
  3. Examine the relationship between learning styles and academic performance.
  4. Provide recommendations on how teaching strategies can be tailored to accommodate diverse learning styles.

1.4 Research Questions

This study seeks to answer the following research questions:

  1. What are the predominant learning styles among senior secondary school students?
  2. How does each learning style correlate with academic performance?
  3. Is there a significant difference in academic performance among students with different learning styles?
  4. How can teaching strategies be adapted to support various learning styles?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

H: There is no significant relationship between learning styles and academic performance.

H: There is a significant relationship between learning styles and academic performance.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant as it addresses a crucial aspect of the teaching and learning process—how students’ individual learning styles affect their academic performance. In an era where personalized education is increasingly advocated, understanding the dynamics between learning preferences and academic achievement can contribute to more effective and inclusive classroom practices. By exploring this relationship among senior secondary school students, the study provides valuable insights that can help optimize teaching methods for improved learning outcomes.

For teachers and educators, the study offers a practical framework for understanding and applying learning style theory in real classroom settings. Teachers who are aware of their students’ learning preferences can design lessons that incorporate a variety of instructional methods—visual aids, hands-on activities, group discussions, and written materials. This can result in better student engagement, improved comprehension, and higher academic performance. Ultimately, the findings of this research can serve as a guide for teachers seeking to move beyond the “one-size-fits-all” teaching approach.

The study will also benefit students, as they stand to gain the most when their unique learning styles are recognized and supported. Students who are aware of their preferred learning style can adopt more effective study habits and strategies tailored to their strengths. For example, a visual learner might use diagrams and charts for revision, while a kinesthetic learner might benefit from interactive learning methods. Increased self-awareness among students can lead to improved academic confidence and performance.

School administrators and policymakers are also key beneficiaries of this research. The findings can inform decision-making regarding teacher training, classroom resources, and curriculum development. By recognizing the importance of learning styles in academic success, educational policies can be revised to promote differentiated instruction and inclusive learning environments. This is especially relevant in a diverse educational system like Nigeria’s, where students vary in cognitive abilities, cultural backgrounds, and exposure to formal education.

In addition, curriculum developers and educational planners can use the insights from this study to create more flexible and dynamic curricula that cater to a variety of learners. Educational materials can be diversified to include multimedia content, experiential learning components, and individualized learning pathways. Doing so would align curriculum content with the diverse learning needs of students, thereby increasing its effectiveness and relevance.

Finally, the study contributes to the growing body of academic literature on student learning and performance, particularly within the Nigerian context. It provides empirical data that can be used by researchers, scholars, and educators in further studies on learner-centered education, differentiated instruction, and inclusive pedagogy. By highlighting the role of learning styles in academic achievement, the study lays a foundation for future research and innovation in teaching and learning strategies.

1.7 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study examines the effect of Learning Style on The Academics Performance Of Senior  Secondary School Students. The study is limited to students of five selected Secondary Schools in Ikorodu, Lagos. The study does not consider other factors affecting academic performance such as socio-economic status, teacher effectiveness, or school infrastructure.

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Effect: Effect refers to the measurable change or impact that one variable has on another. In the context of this study, it denotes the influence that learning styles have on the academic performance of students. It implies a cause-and-result relationship where a change in learning style may lead to a corresponding change in academic outcomes.

Learning Style: Learning Style is the preferred way in which an individual processes, understands, and retains information during the learning process. It encompasses how a student prefers to receive instruction—whether visually (through images), auditorily (through listening), kinesthetically (through doing), or through reading and writing. Different students learn best using different styles, and recognizing these styles can help improve educational delivery and student success.

Academic Performance: Academic Performance refers to how well a student achieves learning objectives in school, typically measured through tests, assignments, examinations, and overall grades. It reflects the student’s grasp of academic content and skills. High academic performance suggests effective understanding and retention of knowledge, while poor performance may indicate difficulties in learning or mismatched instructional methods.

Senior Secondary School: Senior Secondary School is the stage of education that typically covers the final three years of secondary education, often referred to as SS1 to SS3 in the Nigerian educational system. It follows junior secondary education and precedes tertiary education. This level prepares students for national examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and equips them with knowledge for university, vocational training, or employment.

Students: Students are individuals enrolled in a formal educational institution for the purpose of acquiring knowledge, skills, and values. In this study, the term specifically refers to learners attending senior secondary school who are the subjects of investigation regarding their learning styles and academic performance.
