INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Chemistry, as a branch of science, is fundamental in understanding the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter. Among its various branches, organic chemistry holds a central place due to its extensive application in industries such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, agriculture, and biochemistry (Brown, LeMay, Bursten, & Murphy, 2014). Organic chemistry involves the study of carbon-containing compounds and their reactions, requiring students to comprehend abstract concepts, mechanisms, and structures. These concepts are often perceived as challenging by students due to their abstract nature, heavy reliance on visualization, and need for higher-order cognitive skills (Garnett, Garnett, & Hackling, 1995).
In recent decades, educational technologies have gained attention as tools to improve learning outcomes in science education. Multimedia-assisted instruction (MAI), which integrates text, images, animations, audio, and video in teaching, has been found to enhance students’ understanding of complex scientific concepts by catering to multiple learning styles (Mayer, 2009). In the context of organic chemistry, MAI can simplify abstract topics such as stereochemistry, reaction mechanisms, and molecular structures, which are often difficult to grasp through traditional lecture-based methods.
Research has shown that multimedia instruction facilitates active learning, increases students’ engagement, and improves retention of scientific concepts (Salomon, 1990; Moreno & Mayer, 2007). In Nigeria, however, the use of multimedia resources in secondary school chemistry classrooms is still limited due to infrastructural deficits, lack of trained personnel, and insufficient educational policy support (Okebukola, 2013). Consequently, students often rely on rote memorization, which does not foster deep conceptual understanding or application skills necessary for higher education and professional careers in science-related fields.
Given these challenges, investigating the effect of multimedia-assisted instruction on students’ understanding of organic chemistry concepts is essential. This study focuses on senior secondary school students in Lagos State, Nigeria, who are at a critical stage of their education, preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), where performance in chemistry significantly impacts tertiary education opportunities.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of organic chemistry in science education, many secondary school students in Lagos State struggle to understand and apply its concepts effectively. Studies indicate that students’ poor performance in chemistry examinations is largely attributed to the abstract nature of the subject, lack of visualization tools, ineffective teaching strategies, and low motivation (Ogunleye & Ajayi, 2018; Nwosu & Obodo, 2020). Traditional instructional methods, predominantly lecture-based, often fail to cater to diverse learning styles, leaving visual and kinesthetic learners at a disadvantage.
Furthermore, students’ inability to grasp organic chemistry concepts limits their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, negatively affecting their performance in both practical and theoretical examinations. Teachers, constrained by large class sizes, inadequate teaching aids, and limited access to digital resources, struggle to employ innovative methods that could enhance students’ conceptual understanding. Although multimedia-assisted instruction has been reported to improve learning outcomes in various science subjects, empirical research on its effectiveness specifically in organic chemistry within the Nigerian context remains scarce.
This gap in research necessitates an empirical study to evaluate the effect of multimedia-assisted instruction on students’ understanding of organic chemistry concepts. By addressing this problem, the study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for improving chemistry teaching methods and educational outcomes in Lagos State senior secondary schools.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The primary objective of this study is to examine the effect of multimedia-assisted instruction on students’ understanding of organic chemistry concepts. The specific objectives are:

1.4 Research Hypothesis
The study is guided by the following hypothesis:
H₀: There is no significant difference in the understanding of organic chemistry concepts between students taught using multimedia-assisted instruction and those taught using traditional methods.

The study focuses on senior secondary school students (SS2) in Lagos State, Nigeria, examining their understanding of selected organic chemistry concepts, including hydrocarbons, functional groups, and reaction mechanisms. The study is limited to a sample of schools accessible within the metropolitan area of Lagos State, employing multimedia-assisted instruction as the experimental teaching method.
