Project – The Effect of School Facilities on Students’ Classroom Participation: A Study of Public Secondary Schools in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA, Ogun State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely regarded as an important instrument for individual development and social transformation because it provides learners with knowledge, skills, values and competencies required for effective participation in society. At the secondary school level, the quality of the educational process is influenced not only by the curriculum and competence of teachers but also by the physical and instructional environment in which teaching and learning take place. School facilities therefore constitute an important component of the educational environment. Facilities such as classrooms, desks and chairs, laboratories, libraries, toilets, water supply, electricity, instructional materials, information and communication technology facilities and recreational spaces provide the physical conditions within which teachers and students interact. The availability and adequacy of these facilities can influence how students experience school and how actively they participate in classroom activities. Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris (2004) explain that student engagement has behavioural, emotional and cognitive dimensions and that engagement is responsive to contextual features of the school environment. This suggests that the physical conditions in which students learn can form part of the context that supports or constrains their active involvement in classroom activities.

School facilities can be understood as the physical and material resources provided within a school to facilitate effective teaching and learning. They include school buildings, classrooms, furniture, laboratories, libraries, workshops, instructional equipment, sanitation facilities, water, electricity and other resources that support educational activities. Adequate facilities can create an environment in which students are able to sit comfortably, see and hear the teacher, use learning materials, carry out practical activities and interact with their classmates. In contrast, inadequate or poorly maintained facilities may create physical discomfort, distractions and limitations that can affect students’ involvement in classroom activities. The importance of school facilities to educational outcomes has been demonstrated in Ogun State. David and Emunemu (2021) examined physical and instructional facilities in public secondary schools in Ogun State and investigated their relationship with students’ learning outcomes, demonstrating the relevance of facility availability to the educational experience of students.

Students’ classroom participation refers to the extent to which learners actively take part in the teaching and learning process. It may involve attending lessons regularly, paying attention, asking and answering questions, contributing to discussions, participating in group activities, completing classroom tasks, undertaking practical exercises and interacting appropriately with teachers and other learners. Participation is an important behavioural manifestation of student engagement because learning requires more than physical presence in a classroom. Finn and Zimmer (2012) describe engagement as a multidimensional construct associated with students’ participation and educational outcomes and emphasize that engagement can be influenced by school policies and practices. Fredricks et al. (2004) similarly identify behavioural engagement as including participation and involvement in academic and social activities. Therefore, examining classroom participation provides an important means of understanding whether students are merely present in school or are actively involved in the learning process.

The classroom itself is one of the most fundamental school facilities because it provides the immediate physical setting for most teaching and learning activities. A classroom that is spacious, adequately ventilated, sufficiently illuminated, properly furnished and maintained can provide students with conditions conducive to concentration and interaction. Conversely, overcrowding, broken desks, inadequate ventilation, poor lighting, damaged floors, leaking roofs or insufficient classroom space may interfere with students’ comfort and ability to participate. Evidence from Ado-Odo/Ota LGA is particularly relevant to this study. Izobo-Martins, Dare-Abel, and Ayo-Vaughan (2014) examined infrastructure conditions in public secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA and reported that a considerable proportion of school infrastructure was in a state of disrepair, with maintenance culture, user attitudes and inadequate funding identified among the factors influencing facility conditions. Such findings make the physical classroom environment an important issue when examining students’ participation in public secondary schools in the area.

Furniture and instructional facilities are also important components of the classroom environment. Desks and chairs that are adequate in number and appropriate for students’ needs can enable learners to sit comfortably, write, read and participate in individual or group activities. Similarly, instructional materials, laboratory equipment, library resources and technological facilities can provide opportunities for students to interact directly with learning content. When these resources are absent or inadequate, teachers may rely heavily on verbal explanations, thereby reducing opportunities for students to engage in practical and interactive learning experiences. Ajayi and Akinsanya (2021), in their study of school location, school facilities and resource utilization in Ogun State secondary schools, found that differences in the availability of educational resources were relevant to the educational conditions experienced by schools. Their study further emphasized the need to improve schools in order to provide learners with adequate facilities and resources for quality education.

The condition and maintenance of facilities may be as important as their mere availability. A school may have classrooms, toilets, furniture, laboratories or other facilities on paper, but if those facilities are damaged, overcrowded, unsafe or not functional, their educational value may be considerably reduced. UNICEF (2024) notes that safe educational environments require essential conditions that protect children and support their ability to learn, reflecting the broader importance of school environments to educational participation. In Ogun State, Izobo-Martins et al. (2014) found that several public secondary school infrastructures in Ado-Odo/Ota required attention because of varying degrees of disrepair. More recent research in Ogun State has likewise identified the condition of school facilities as an important educational concern. Ogunfuyi, Oshinyadi, and Fatai (2025), for example, reported that facilities in a substantial proportion of public secondary schools in Ogun-East Senatorial District were in poor condition and examined their relationship with students’ academic performance. Although academic performance is different from classroom participation, the findings reinforce the importance of functional facilities in the school environment.

The issue is particularly significant in public secondary schools because these institutions serve a large proportion of students and depend substantially on public investment and institutional maintenance systems for the provision and upkeep of facilities. Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area is an important educational and socio-economic area of Ogun State, and previous research has specifically identified facility and infrastructure concerns in its public secondary schools. Izobo-Martins et al. (2014) studied 36 out of 47 public secondary school buildings in the LGA and found variations in the availability and condition of infrastructural amenities, including concerns related to maintenance and funding. At the same time, research on school engagement indicates that students’ participation is influenced by features of the environments in which learning occurs (Fredricks et al., 2004). Consequently, there is a need to move beyond examining school facilities merely in relation to examination results and to investigate how the availability, adequacy and condition of facilities may influence students’ actual participation in classroom activities in public secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Effective classroom participation is an important part of the teaching and learning process because students are expected not only to attend school but also to listen, ask questions, answer questions, contribute to discussions, participate in practical activities and undertake classroom tasks. However, the extent to which students participate actively may be influenced by the conditions surrounding their learning. Fredricks et al. (2004) identify behavioural engagement as an important dimension of school engagement and emphasize the influence of contextual factors on students’ engagement. Where students learn in uncomfortable, overcrowded or poorly equipped classrooms, their opportunities and motivation to participate actively may be affected. This creates a need to examine whether the physical and instructional facilities available in public secondary schools provide an environment capable of supporting meaningful classroom participation.

A major concern is that the availability of school facilities does not necessarily mean that such facilities are adequate, functional or properly maintained. Evidence from Ado-Odo/Ota LGA has already revealed concerns about the condition of public secondary school infrastructure. Izobo-Martins et al. (2014), in a study involving public secondary schools in the LGA, reported that a sizeable proportion of school infrastructure was in a state of disrepair and identified inadequate funding, maintenance practices and user attitudes among factors affecting infrastructure conditions. Poorly maintained classrooms, insufficient furniture, inadequate sanitation facilities and other infrastructural deficiencies can potentially create physical and psychological distractions that may discourage active participation in lessons. However, the existing evidence from the area has largely concentrated on infrastructure conditions rather than directly examining how those conditions relate to students’ classroom participation.

Another problem concerns the adequacy of instructional facilities and learning resources available to students. Public secondary schools may differ in their access to laboratories, libraries, instructional materials, ICT resources, furniture and other facilities needed to support interactive teaching and learning. Ajayi and Akinsanya (2021) found that school location, facilities and resource utilization were relevant variables in examining educational conditions and academic performance in Ogun State secondary schools. Similarly, David and Emunemu (2021) examined physical and instructional facilities in public secondary schools in Ogun State and their relationship with student learning outcomes. While these studies provide useful evidence about facilities and educational outcomes, there remains a need to specifically investigate students’ classroom participation as an outcome. Classroom participation involves immediate behaviours such as asking questions, responding to teachers, contributing to discussions and participating in classroom activities, and therefore deserves direct investigation rather than being inferred solely from examination performance.

The central problem of this study, therefore, is the insufficient empirical understanding of how school facilities influence students’ classroom participation in public secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA, Ogun State. Previous studies have documented infrastructure deficiencies in the area and examined school facilities in relation to academic performance or learning outcomes, but the specific relationship between facilities and students’ active classroom participation requires further attention. The study is consequently designed to examine whether classroom facilities, school furniture, instructional facilities and the general condition of school infrastructure influence students’ willingness and ability to participate actively in classroom activities. Establishing this relationship can provide evidence that may assist education stakeholders in identifying facility-related factors that need attention in order to create learning environments that support greater student participation (Izobo-Martins et al., 2014; David & Emunemu, 2021; Ogunfuyi et al., 2025).

H₀: There is no statistically significant relationship between school facilities and students’ classroom participation in public secondary schools in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to the Ogun State Government and educational authorities because its findings may provide empirical information on the relationship between school facilities and students’ classroom participation. The findings may assist policymakers and education administrators in identifying facility areas that require improvement, rehabilitation, replacement or increased investment.

The study will also be useful to school principals and administrators. Information generated from the study may help school administrators understand the importance of maintaining classrooms, furniture, instructional resources and other facilities in functional conditions. The findings may encourage school management to prioritize regular inspection and maintenance of available facilities.

Teachers may also benefit from the study because functional facilities can provide better conditions for organizing classroom activities. The findings may help teachers identify facility-related challenges that affect students’ participation and encourage them to adopt appropriate strategies for maximizing available resources.

Students are another important group that may benefit from the study. Improved school facilities may provide students with more comfortable and supportive learning environments in which they can participate in classroom discussions, practical activities, group work and other learning experiences.

The study will also be useful to parents, community members and school-based stakeholders. The findings may create greater awareness of the relationship between school infrastructure and students’ learning experiences and may encourage community participation in the protection and maintenance of school facilities.

Finally, the study will contribute to existing academic literature on school facilities and student participation, particularly within the Nigerian and Ogun State context. It may serve as a reference for future researchers who wish to investigate school infrastructure, classroom environment, student engagement, participation or related educational outcomes.
