CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Alcohol consumption is a significant global public health issue, particularly among young people. According to the World Health Organization (2018), alcohol is one of the leading risk factors for premature death and disability among individuals aged 15 to 29 years. In developing nations like Nigeria, the problem is aggravated by weak regulatory systems, easy accessibility to alcohol, and the glamorization of drinking in popular culture. Young people are particularly vulnerable because they are at a transitional stage of life, often exposed to experimentation and peer pressure. Consequently, their mental health is often compromised due to risky alcohol use, which can result in depression, anxiety, and long-term dependence (Obot, 2020).

A major driver of alcohol consumption among youth is peer influence. Adolescents and young adults often consume alcohol to gain social acceptance or conform to the behaviors of their peers (Patrick et al., 2019). Stress and curiosity also contribute, particularly in communities where social and economic challenges are prevalent. In Nigeria, alcohol use has been normalized in many social settings, from festivals to family events, thus making it difficult for youths to resist experimentation. However, the consequences are often severe, leading to poor academic performance, erratic behavior, and a decline in mental resilience (Odejide, 2019).

Christianity, particularly within the evangelical tradition, strongly warns against drunkenness and the abuse of substances. The Bible admonishes believers to avoid drunkenness, with verses such as Proverbs 20:1, which states, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whoever is deceived thereby is not wise,” and Ephesians 5:18, which cautions against being drunk with wine. Despite these teachings, many Christian youths still engage in alcohol consumption. This contradiction points to the tension between biblical teachings and the sociocultural realities that young people face in contemporary Nigeria (Nwaoga, 2018).

The Nigerian context adds further complexity to this issue. In many communities, including Keffi in Nasarawa State, alcohol is easily accessible and sometimes produced locally, making it both affordable and socially integrated into daily life. Youths in such environments are more likely to adopt drinking habits as part of their social interactions. In addition, the lack of effective parental monitoring and weak enforcement of alcohol regulations have further worsened the problem. Such a situation places Christian youths, who are expected to uphold moral and spiritual values, at risk of compromising their faith and health through alcohol use (Okon, 2021).

The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) Keffi District Church Council (DCC) represents one of the most vibrant Christian communities in Nasarawa State. The church emphasizes discipleship, moral uprightness, and holistic well-being of its members. Yet, anecdotal evidence suggests that alcohol consumption is not entirely absent among its youths. This raises concerns about the spiritual, social, and psychological health of these young believers. The involvement of Christian youths in drinking behaviors that contradict their faith’s teachings signals a deeper crisis requiring scholarly investigation (Afolabi, 2020).

Alcohol consumption is known to have severe mental health implications. Studies have shown that regular alcohol use among youths increases the likelihood of depression, low self-esteem, suicidal ideation, and poor emotional regulation (Grant et al., 2017). In the context of Christian youths, such mental health struggles may also manifest as reduced participation in church activities, weakened spiritual commitment, and moral lapses. The combination of mental distress and spiritual decline presents a unique challenge for faith-based communities such as ECWA Keffi DCC.

Furthermore, alcohol abuse among Christian youths has broader social implications. It can lead to family conflicts, strained peer relationships, and deviant behaviors that disrupt community harmony. For a religious community that emphasizes moral discipline and evangelism, these outcomes contradict the church’s mission and vision. This highlights the need for proactive strategies that combine biblical teachings with mental health interventions to support youths who may be struggling with alcohol use (Ezeh & Uche, 2021).

Given these realities, it becomes essential to explore how alcohol consumption impacts the mental health of Christian youths within ECWA Keffi DCC. By focusing on this specific group, the study aims to provide a clearer understanding of the prevalence of alcohol use among Christian youths, its effects on their psychological well-being, and the role of the church in addressing these challenges. Such findings will be vital in developing faith-based interventions that strengthen resilience, promote sobriety, and enhance the spiritual and mental health of Christian youths in Keffi and beyond.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Christian faith, particularly in evangelical circles, emphasizes abstinence from harmful substances, including alcohol. Biblical injunctions consistently warn against drunkenness and its destructive effects on both the individual and the community (Proverbs 23:29–35; Ephesians 5:18). Despite these clear doctrinal teachings, some Christian youths continue to indulge in alcohol consumption. This creates a moral and spiritual contradiction, raising concerns about the effectiveness of faith-based teachings in shaping the lifestyle choices of young believers. The persistence of alcohol use among Christian youths suggests that biblical principles alone may not be sufficient to counter sociocultural and psychological pressures (Nwaoga, 2018).

The involvement of Christian youths in alcohol consumption has profound implications for their mental health. Studies show that excessive alcohol use among young people increases the risks of depression, suicidal ideation, poor self-esteem, and anxiety disorders (Odejide, 2019). Furthermore, alcohol has been linked to cognitive impairments that affect decision-making, concentration, and overall emotional stability (Grant et al., 2017). For Christian youths, these mental health challenges may also weaken their faith commitment, affect their participation in spiritual activities, and undermine their moral integrity. This dual burden of psychological distress and spiritual decline makes alcohol consumption a serious concern for the church.

In Keffi, Nasarawa State, the prevalence of alcohol consumption among youths is heightened by socioeconomic challenges, peer influence, and cultural acceptance of drinking. Locally brewed alcoholic beverages are easily accessible and affordable, increasing the risk of experimentation and regular use among young people. Within this environment, even Christian youths are not immune to the temptation of alcohol. The accessibility of alcohol raises critical questions about how faith communities like ECWA Keffi DCC are addressing the issue and supporting their youth in resisting such influences (Obot, 2020).

Despite the seriousness of this issue, research specifically focusing on alcohol consumption among Christian youths in Nigeria remains limited. Most studies examine alcohol use among general youth populations, overlooking the unique context of religious communities (Okon, 2021). The lack of focused studies creates a knowledge gap, particularly in understanding how alcohol use interacts with spiritual life, church participation, and mental health among Christian youths. Addressing this gap is crucial because faith-based communities have the potential to play a key role in prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation strategies.

Moreover, the paradox of Christian youths engaging in behaviors contrary to their faith points to broader challenges in youth discipleship and mentorship within the church. If unaddressed, alcohol use among Christian youths may contribute to increased dropout from church activities, moral lapses, and even substance dependence in adulthood. Such outcomes threaten not only the personal development of the youths but also the mission of the church in raising a spiritually vibrant and mentally healthy generation (Afolabi, 2020).

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the rising involvement of Christian youths in alcohol consumption despite clear biblical prohibitions and the potential negative effects on their mental health. Specifically, there is a need to investigate the prevalence of alcohol use among youths in ECWA Keffi DCC, explore its psychological and spiritual consequences, and identify strategies the church can adopt to reduce the practice. By examining these dynamics, the study aims to contribute to both academic literature and practical interventions in faith-based communities.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to examine the effects of alcohol consumption on the mental health of Christian youths in ECWA Keffi DCC.
The specific objectives are to:

1. Investigate the prevalence of alcohol consumption among Christian youths in ECWA Keffi DCC.
2. Examine the psychological effects of alcohol consumption on Christian youths.
3. Assess the influence of alcohol consumption on the spiritual and social well-being of Christian youths.
4. Suggest strategies the church can adopt to curb alcohol consumption and promote positive mental health among its youth.

1.4 Research Question

This study will be guided by the following research questions:

1. What is the prevalence of alcohol consumption among Christian youths in ECWA Keffi DCC?
2. What psychological effects does alcohol consumption have on Christian youths?
3. How does alcohol consumption affect the spiritual and social lives of Christian youths?
4. What strategies can ECWA Keffi DCC adopt to reduce alcohol consumption and improve youth mental health?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

H₀: Alcohol consumption has no significant effect on the mental health of Christian youths in ECWA Keffi DCC.

H₁: Alcohol consumption has a significant negative effect on the mental health of Christian youths in ECWA Keffi DCC.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant because it will generate vital information on the extent of alcohol consumption among Christian youths in ECWA Keffi DCC. While much has been said about alcohol use among the general population, there is little data focused specifically on Christian youths within a local church setting. By narrowing the focus to this group, the research will provide concrete evidence on the patterns and prevalence of alcohol consumption, helping both scholars and church leaders understand the scope of the problem more clearly.

Another important contribution of this study is its emphasis on the connection between alcohol consumption and mental health. Alcohol use is often associated with emotional instability, depression, anxiety, and poor self-esteem, yet these effects are rarely studied within the context of Christian youth. By examining these links, the study will shed light on how substance use undermines not only mental well-being but also spiritual growth. This knowledge will be valuable for youth workers, counselors, and church leaders who are concerned with the holistic development of young people.

The findings will also assist church leaders in designing effective interventions for their youth. Concrete evidence about the challenges facing Christian youths will make it easier for leaders to develop mentorship, discipleship, and counseling programs that address both spiritual and psychological needs. In addition, such information will help the church to strengthen its teachings and pastoral care systems, equipping leaders to engage youths more effectively and reduce the risks of alcohol-related problems.

Parents and guardians also stand to benefit from this study. Many families are unaware of the extent to which alcohol consumption affects their children’s mental and spiritual health. By highlighting the risks associated with youth alcohol use, the study will empower parents to be more proactive in guiding and monitoring their children. Families will be encouraged to create supportive environments where young people can resist peer pressure and make healthier choices.

The study is further significant because it can inform the work of Christian organizations and community groups that are focused on youth development. With a clearer understanding of the challenges faced by Christian youths, these organizations can design faith-based intervention programs that combine spiritual guidance with practical support. This makes their work more effective, as it is tailored to the unique context of Christian communities.

Finally, the study contributes to the broader goal of raising a generation of responsible, mentally healthy, and spiritually strong Christian youths. By addressing alcohol consumption and its negative effects, the research supports the church’s mission of holistic growth and discipleship. In the long run, this will not only benefit individual youths but also strengthen the church community and contribute positively to society at large.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will focus on Christian youths within ECWA Keffi DCC, Nasarawa State. It will examine alcohol consumption patterns, its effects on their mental health, and its influence on their spiritual and social well-being. The study will not cover all youths in Keffi but will be limited to those actively involved in ECWA Keffi DCC.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The study may face limitations such as respondents’ unwillingness to disclose alcohol consumption due to stigma, limited access to secondary data, and time constraints. However, the researcher will mitigate these challenges by ensuring confidentiality and employing reliable data collection methods.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

• Alcohol Consumption: The intake of beverages containing ethanol, including beer, wine, and spirits, regardless of the quantity.
• Christian Youths: Young individuals (aged 15–35 years) who are members of ECWA Keffi DCC.
• Mental Health: A state of emotional, psychological, and social well-being in which an individual can cope with life’s stresses, work productively, and contribute to the community.
• ECWA Keffi DCC: Evangelical Church Winning All District Church Council in Keffi, Nasarawa State, Nigeria.
