Project – The Impact of Christian Counselling on Marriage Stability among Pentecostal Church Members in Lagos Metropolis: A Study of Selected Churches
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Background of the Study
Marriage is one of the oldest and most significant social institutions established for human relationship, companionship, family formation, and societal continuity. Across cultures and religious traditions, marriage represents a structured relationship between individuals who commit themselves to mutual support, responsibility, and shared life experiences. Within Christianity, marriage is understood not only as a social arrangement but also as a divine institution established by God. The Bible presents marriage as a covenant relationship characterised by love, commitment, faithfulness, and mutual responsibility between husband and wife. Therefore, maintaining marital stability has remained a major concern within Christian communities because the strength of families significantly influences the strength of the church and society.
In contemporary society, marriage relationships are increasingly affected by numerous challenges, including poor communication, financial pressure, changing social values, infidelity, domestic conflicts, emotional disconnection, and inadequate conflict management skills. These challenges have contributed to increasing marital dissatisfaction and instability in many societies. According to Amato (2010), marital instability is influenced by multiple social and personal factors, including economic difficulties, individual expectations, communication patterns, and changing cultural attitudes toward marriage. As families experience these pressures, the need for effective support systems that promote healthy marital relationships has become increasingly important.
Within the Christian context, counselling has emerged as an important instrument for strengthening marriages and helping couples overcome relational difficulties. Christian counselling combines psychological principles with biblical teachings to provide guidance that addresses emotional, relational, and spiritual dimensions of marriage. Unlike general counselling approaches, Christian counselling recognises the importance of faith, commitment, forgiveness, love, and spiritual growth in sustaining marital relationships. According to McMinn (2011), Christian counselling seeks to integrate theological understanding with psychological knowledge in order to provide holistic care for individuals and families.
Marriage counselling, as an aspect of Christian counselling, focuses on helping couples improve communication, resolve conflicts, understand each other’s needs, and develop healthier patterns of interaction. Counselling provides couples with opportunities to discuss challenges in a structured and supportive environment while receiving guidance from trained counsellors, pastors, or church leaders. According to Worthington (2013), effective marital counselling can contribute significantly to relationship satisfaction by improving communication, emotional connection, and conflict resolution abilities among couples.
Pentecostal churches in Nigeria have increasingly recognised the importance of counselling as part of their pastoral responsibility. Pentecostal Christianity places strong emphasis on spiritual growth, prayer, family values, and practical Christian living. As a result, many Pentecostal churches have established counselling units, marriage seminars, premarital counselling programmes, and pastoral care ministries aimed at strengthening families. These initiatives reflect the belief that spiritual guidance and counselling support are essential for helping believers maintain stable and fulfilling marriages.
The Pentecostal movement in Nigeria has experienced significant growth over the past decades, with churches playing important roles in providing spiritual, social, and emotional support to members. Churches such as Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Redeemed Christian Church of God, and other Pentecostal denominations have established counselling departments and family ministries to address the challenges faced by individuals and couples. These ministries provide platforms where members can receive guidance on marital issues, communication problems, parenting challenges, and family conflicts.
The importance of Christian counselling in marriage stability is based on the understanding that many marital problems are not only emotional or social but also involve spiritual dimensions. Christian counselling helps couples apply biblical principles such as forgiveness, patience, humility, sacrifice, and unconditional love in addressing relationship challenges. According to Chapman (2015), successful marriages require intentional communication, understanding, and commitment, which can be strengthened through appropriate guidance and counselling.
In Lagos Metropolis, marital challenges have become increasingly visible due to the pressures associated with urban living. Lagos is characterised by rapid population growth, demanding work environments, economic challenges, and changing social lifestyles. These factors often place pressure on marital relationships. Couples may struggle with work-life balance, financial responsibilities, inadequate time together, and communication difficulties. As a result, Pentecostal churches in Lagos have increasingly provided counselling services to support couples and promote family stability.
Christian counselling also plays a preventive role in marriage relationships through premarital counselling programmes. Premarital counselling helps engaged couples understand marital responsibilities, expectations, communication patterns, financial management, and conflict resolution before entering marriage. According to Stanley, Amato, Johnson, and Markman (2006), premarital education programmes can improve relationship quality by equipping couples with knowledge and skills necessary for successful marriages.
Furthermore, Christian counselling provides opportunities for early intervention when couples experience difficulties. Many marital problems become severe because couples fail to seek assistance at the early stages of conflict. Counselling encourages couples to address issues before they develop into serious relationship breakdowns. Through counselling sessions, couples can identify unhealthy behaviours, improve understanding, and rebuild emotional connections.
The role of pastors and church counsellors is particularly important in Pentecostal churches because many members consider spiritual leaders as trusted sources of guidance. Pastors often serve as marriage counsellors because they possess spiritual authority and close relationships with members. However, effective marital counselling requires more than spiritual knowledge; it also requires counselling skills, emotional intelligence, communication competence, and understanding of human relationships. Corey (2017) argues that effective counselling requires proper training, ethical awareness, and appropriate application of counselling techniques.
Despite the increasing recognition of Christian counselling, questions remain concerning its actual impact on marriage stability among Pentecostal church members. While many churches provide counselling programmes, there is a need to examine whether these interventions significantly contribute to improved marital relationships. Understanding the effectiveness of Christian counselling can help churches develop better strategies for supporting families and strengthening marriages.
Therefore, this study examines the impact of Christian counselling on marriage stability among Pentecostal church members in Lagos Metropolis. The study seeks to determine how counselling practices influence communication, conflict resolution, commitment, and overall marital satisfaction among Christian couples.
1.1 Statement of the Problem
Marriage instability has become a significant concern within contemporary society, including Christian communities. Despite the importance attached to marriage in Pentecostal churches, many couples continue to experience challenges that threaten marital harmony and stability. Problems such as poor communication, frequent disagreements, financial difficulties, emotional distance, and lack of mutual understanding have contributed to marital dissatisfaction among many couples.
In Lagos Metropolis, the pressures associated with urban life have intensified challenges experienced by married couples. The high cost of living, demanding employment conditions, inadequate family time, and changing social expectations have created circumstances that negatively affect marital relationships. Many couples struggle to balance personal responsibilities, career demands, and family obligations, leading to increased tension within marriages.
Although Pentecostal churches provide marriage teachings, seminars, prayers, and counselling programmes, marital challenges continue to exist among church members. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of existing Christian counselling approaches in promoting marital stability. While churches encourage couples to seek spiritual solutions, some couples may require structured counselling interventions that address communication patterns, emotional needs, and relationship skills.
Another problem is that some pastors and church counsellors may lack adequate professional counselling training. While spiritual maturity and biblical knowledge are important, effective marriage counselling also requires understanding of counselling theories, human behaviour, conflict resolution strategies, and ethical practices. Inadequate counselling skills may limit the ability of church leaders to effectively address complex marital problems.
Furthermore, some couples hesitate to seek counselling because of fear of exposure, social stigma, or the belief that marital problems should remain private. This reluctance may allow problems to continue until they become difficult to resolve. There is therefore a need to examine whether Christian counselling programmes within Pentecostal churches are accessible, effective, and capable of improving marital relationships.
Previous studies have examined marriage counselling and family relationships; however, limited attention has been given to the specific impact of Christian counselling on marriage stability among Pentecostal church members in Lagos Metropolis. This creates a gap in knowledge regarding the contribution of church-based counselling programmes to sustaining Christian marriages.
The problem of this study, therefore, is the continued occurrence of marital instability among Pentecostal church members despite the availability of Christian counselling services. The study seeks to investigate whether Christian counselling significantly contributes to marriage stability among couples in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos Metropolis.
