Project – The impact of Church Environment on Church Growth. A Study of five Selected Churches in FCT Abuja

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The church occupies an important place in Christian theology and in the social and spiritual life of many communities. In the New Testament, the church is presented as the body of Christ, the household of God and the community of believers called to worship God, proclaim the gospel, make disciples and demonstrate Christian love in society (Matt. 28:19–20; Acts 2:42–47; 1 Cor. 12:27; Eph. 2:19–22). Consequently, the health and growth of a local church are important concerns in Christian ministry and practical theology.

Church growth may be understood broadly as the increase and development of the Christian community. It can involve numerical growth through conversion and incorporation of new believers, biological growth through the raising of children within the faith, transfer growth through the movement of Christians from one congregation to another, and spiritual or qualitative growth through Christian maturity and discipleship. McGavran (1970), one of the major figures in the modern church-growth movement, argues that church growth should be concerned with the factors that contribute to the multiplication of Christian congregations and the making of disciples. His work established an important foundation for studying why some churches grow while others remain stagnant.

The biblical understanding of church growth, however, is broader than numerical increase. The early Christian community described in Acts 2:42–47 experienced numerical increase, but its growth was also characterized by teaching, fellowship, prayer, sharing of resources, worship and evangelism. Verse 47 states that the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. This suggests that healthy church growth involves both divine activity and the faithful participation of the Christian community.

Jesus Christ also used the imagery of growth in describing the Kingdom of God. In Matthew 13:31–32, the kingdom is compared to a mustard seed that grows from something small into something significantly larger. Similarly, in Mark 4:26–29, Jesus uses the imagery of seed growth to describe the mysterious development of God’s kingdom. These passages indicate that growth is an important biblical theme, while also emphasizing that growth ultimately belongs to God.

The Apostle Paul similarly recognized the distinction between human participation and divine agency in church growth. In 1 Corinthians 3:6–7, Paul states that he planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. This passage is significant for understanding church growth because it acknowledges that leaders and members have responsibilities, but the ultimate source of spiritual growth is God. Thus, studying factors associated with church growth does not mean reducing the work of God to organizational or environmental variables. Rather, it involves examining the human and contextual conditions through which the church carries out its mission.

One factor that deserves attention is the church environment. The term church environment refers broadly to the physical, social, relational, spiritual, organizational and cultural atmosphere in which a congregation functions. It includes such factors as the appearance and accessibility of church facilities, cleanliness, seating arrangements, security, ventilation, parking, worship atmosphere, leadership style, interpersonal relationships, friendliness of members, children’s facilities, youth programmes, communication systems and the general sense of belonging experienced by worshippers and visitors.

The environment of a church can influence the way people perceive and experience the congregation. A church may have sound biblical teaching and committed leadership, but if visitors encounter an environment that is hostile, disorganized, unsafe, excessively uncomfortable or unwelcoming, their willingness to return may be affected. Conversely, a clean, accessible, welcoming and relational environment may help visitors feel accepted and may facilitate their continued participation in the congregation.

This does not mean that attractive buildings or sophisticated facilities automatically produce church growth. Christianity is fundamentally concerned with the gospel, discipleship, faith in Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. The early church grew in settings that were sometimes characterized by persecution, limited resources and modest physical facilities. Therefore, the physical environment should not be treated as the primary or sufficient explanation for church growth. Rather, it is one possible contextual factor among many.

McGavran (1970) emphasizes the importance of understanding the social structures and cultural contexts in which people respond to the Christian message. His approach encouraged church leaders to pay attention to the actual social environment within which evangelism and discipleship take place. This provides a useful foundation for considering how the environment surrounding a local congregation may affect its ability to welcome, retain and disciple people.

Wagner (1984), in his discussion of church growth and church health, also emphasizes the importance of effective ministry structures, leadership and contextual sensitivity. His work helped shift attention from merely counting church members toward examining the factors that contribute to effective congregational ministry.

Church environment may also be considered from the perspective of church climate. A congregation develops patterns of relationships, communication and expectations that shape members’ experiences. When church members experience acceptance, care, trust and meaningful participation, they may develop stronger attachment to the congregation. On the other hand, conflict, discrimination, poor communication, authoritarianism and interpersonal hostility may discourage participation and contribute to member withdrawal.

The relational dimension of the church environment is consistent with the New Testament description of Christian community. Jesus commanded His disciples to love one another (John 13:34–35), while Paul instructed Christians to bear one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:2), encourage one another (1 Thess. 5:11) and live in unity (Eph. 4:1–6). These teachings suggest that the quality of interpersonal relationships within a congregation is not merely an organizational concern but part of Christian witness.

The church environment can therefore influence the extent to which people experience the congregation as a Christian community rather than simply as a place where religious services are conducted. Acts 2:44–47 presents the early believers as a community characterized by fellowship, generosity, worship and shared life. Their communal relationships were closely associated with the attractiveness and witness of the early church.

Another important component of church environment is leadership. Church leaders influence the atmosphere of a congregation through their approach to preaching, administration, pastoral care, conflict management, accountability and relationships with members. Effective leadership can contribute to unity, vision and participation, while poor leadership may produce dissatisfaction and division.

The New Testament places significant responsibilities on church leaders. Elders and overseers are expected to demonstrate exemplary character and provide appropriate care for the church (1 Tim. 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9; 1 Pet. 5:1–4). Peter instructs church leaders not to exercise authority domineeringly but to serve as examples to the flock (1 Pet. 5:2–3). This servant-leadership model has implications for the environment created within a local church.

The physical environment is another dimension that deserves attention. Church buildings provide the setting in which worship, teaching, fellowship and ministry activities take place. Factors such as location, accessibility, cleanliness, ventilation, lighting, seating capacity, sound quality, toilets, parking and children’s facilities may influence the practical experience of worshippers.

In a rapidly developing urban centre such as Abuja, these issues can become particularly important. The Federal Capital Territory is characterized by urban expansion, population movement, diverse communities and changing patterns of social life. Recent research describes Abuja as a rapidly growing metropolitan environment experiencing urban expansion and associated challenges involving infrastructure and sustainability (Fahad, 2025).

The location of a church may therefore affect its accessibility to potential members. A congregation located near major roads, residential communities or transport routes may be easier for people to reach than one situated in an inaccessible area. However, accessibility involves more than geographical location. Transport availability, parking, road conditions, security and the cost of travelling to church may also affect participation.

The urban context of Abuja also means that churches operate among people from diverse ethnic, linguistic, professional and socioeconomic backgrounds. This diversity can create opportunities for ministry but can also create challenges relating to integration and belonging. A church environment that demonstrates genuine hospitality and inclusion may be better positioned to accommodate such diversity.

Recent research on Nigerian churches in Abuja and Lagos has found that churches are adapting to changing urban and social conditions through community engagement, innovative worship practices, digital engagement and other strategies aimed at maintaining social relevance (Adeoye, 2024). This is particularly relevant to the present study because it demonstrates that the Nigerian church operates within a changing environment and must continually consider how its ministry practices relate to contemporary society.

The church environment also includes the worship atmosphere. Christian worship involves preaching, prayer, singing, Scripture reading, sacraments or ordinances, fellowship and other expressions of Christian devotion. The quality and organization of worship may affect how members and visitors experience the congregation.

However, worship atmosphere should not be reduced to entertainment or emotional excitement. The New Testament emphasizes that Christian worship should be orderly, edifying and centred upon God (1 Cor. 14:26–40). A healthy worship environment should therefore encourage reverence, participation, biblical understanding and genuine fellowship.

Music and worship styles can also affect the ability of churches to reach different groups of people. In contemporary Christianity, congregations may use traditional hymns, contemporary worship music, choirs, instrumental ensembles, multimedia presentations and other forms of communication. These approaches can create different experiences for worshippers. The challenge for church leaders is to ensure that contextual adaptation does not compromise the theological substance of Christian worship.

The welcoming environment of a congregation is another important consideration. The first experience of a visitor may influence whether he or she develops an interest in the church. Ushers, greeters, security personnel, children’s workers and ordinary members all contribute to the environment experienced by visitors.

Hospitality has a strong biblical foundation. Hebrews 13:2 encourages believers not to neglect hospitality, while Romans 12:13 instructs Christians to practise hospitality. Jesus also emphasized the importance of receiving others with love and humility. Therefore, welcoming visitors should not simply be treated as a church-growth technique; it is part of Christian practice.

Church environment also includes member participation. A congregation in which members are passive recipients of ministry may have limited opportunities for relationship building and discipleship. In contrast, churches that provide opportunities for members to serve in departments, small groups, outreach, music ministry, children’s ministry, welfare activities and community service may create stronger bonds between members and the congregation.

The Apostle Paul describes the church as a body with many members and different functions (1 Cor. 12:12–27). This suggests that Christian ministry is not exclusively the responsibility of pastors. Every believer has a role to play. A church environment that recognizes and develops the gifts of its members may consequently encourage greater commitment and participation.

The children’s and youth environment is also relevant to church growth. Families often consider whether a congregation provides a safe, organized and spiritually meaningful environment for children and young people. Churches that invest in children’s teaching, youth mentorship, age-appropriate programmes and safe facilities may strengthen family participation and intergenerational continuity.

This is particularly important in urban settings where young people are exposed to numerous social and digital influences. Churches therefore need environments in which young people can ask questions, build relationships, develop Christian identity and participate meaningfully in church life.

The church environment also involves community engagement. A congregation that interacts positively with its surrounding community may become recognized not only as a place of worship but also as a source of social support and community service. Jesus taught His followers to be salt and light in the world (Matt. 5:13–16), while the early church demonstrated concern for people in need.

Adeoye (2024) reports that churches in Abuja have increasingly engaged in community programmes addressing issues such as poverty and education and that such activities can strengthen the church’s relationship with its community.

This dimension of church environment is significant because church growth cannot be completely separated from the community in which the church exists. A congregation that understands the needs of its surrounding community may develop ministries that are relevant to those needs. Such ministries can provide opportunities for evangelism, service and relationship building.

At the same time, churches in Nigeria have experienced significant proliferation. Onah and Agbo (2021) examine the rapid increase in the number of churches in Nigeria and discuss the paradox between church proliferation and continuing moral challenges in society. The increasing number of churches makes the question of congregational distinctiveness and healthy growth particularly important. The mere establishment of additional churches does not automatically demonstrate effective Christian growth.

In such an environment, churches may need to consider not only how many people attend their services but also why people remain, why visitors return, how members participate and whether the church is fulfilling its spiritual and social responsibilities.

The concept of church health is useful here. Warren (1995) argues that churches should focus on developing healthy processes rather than simply pursuing numerical growth. His approach emphasizes purposes such as worship, evangelism, ministry, fellowship and discipleship. This perspective is relevant because an unhealthy church environment may produce temporary numerical increases without developing stable discipleship and long-term congregational vitality.

Similarly, Rainer (1999) examines the characteristics and processes associated with effective congregational development and emphasizes the importance of intentional ministry. His work reinforces the idea that church growth involves multiple interacting factors rather than a single variable.

Church growth may therefore be influenced by a combination of spiritual, theological, leadership, organizational, relational, demographic and environmental factors. The present study focuses specifically on the environmental dimension because it is an area that may be experienced directly by both members and visitors but can sometimes receive less attention than preaching, evangelism or leadership.

The relationship between church environment and growth should nevertheless be treated carefully. A modern building does not guarantee spiritual growth, just as a modest building does not prevent a church from growing. The New Testament church grew under diverse conditions. Consequently, the study does not assume that physical facilities alone determine church growth. Instead, it seeks to investigate whether and how different dimensions of the church environment are associated with church growth among selected congregations in FCT Abuja.

The Abuja context provides a particularly useful setting for such a study. As an expanding metropolitan area, the Federal Capital Territory contains communities with different residential patterns, socioeconomic circumstances, occupations and cultural backgrounds. Urban growth creates opportunities for churches to reach new populations but also increases competition for people’s time, attention and participation.

Research on urban church growth increasingly emphasizes contextual adaptation, leadership, youth ministry, community engagement and digital evangelism as important considerations for churches operating in complex urban environments (Mutamba, 2026). Thus, the environment in which a church operates cannot be separated completely from its mission and growth.

The present study therefore proposes to examine the impact of church environment on church growth through a study of five selected churches in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The study will consider dimensions such as physical facilities, accessibility, cleanliness, security, worship atmosphere, leadership, interpersonal relationships, hospitality, member participation, children’s and youth programmes and community engagement.

By examining these factors across five selected churches, the study hopes to identify whether particular characteristics of the church environment are associated with stronger patterns of church growth. It will also consider the perceptions of church members concerning the environmental features that encourage or discourage participation and retention.

Ultimately, the study recognizes that church growth is both a theological and practical concern. God gives the increase, but church leaders and members have responsibilities in creating an environment in which worship, discipleship, fellowship, evangelism and service can flourish. A healthy church environment should therefore support the church’s biblical mission rather than replace it.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Church growth has become an important concern among Christian denominations and local congregations in Nigeria. Many churches invest considerable resources in evangelism, worship programmes, buildings, media, leadership development and community activities in an effort to attract and retain members. Nevertheless, not all churches experience the same level of growth, even when they operate within the same general geographical and cultural environment.

One of the possible explanations for this difference is the environment created and maintained by individual congregations. While considerable attention is often given to preaching, prayer, evangelism and leadership as determinants of church growth, less attention may be given to the total environment experienced by members and visitors. A church may have a strong preaching ministry but still struggle with poor accessibility, inadequate facilities, unfriendly relationships, poor organization or an atmosphere that discourages participation.

A major problem is therefore the lack of clarity concerning the extent to which the church environment contributes to church growth. It is possible for churches to invest heavily in physical structures without adequately addressing the relational and spiritual environment within the congregation. Conversely, some churches with modest physical facilities may experience significant growth because of strong relationships, effective discipleship, evangelism and community engagement.

Another problem concerns physical facilities. In an urban environment such as Abuja, worshippers may be influenced by practical considerations such as location, accessibility, parking, seating capacity, ventilation, cleanliness, toilets, children’s facilities and general comfort. However, the extent to which these factors actually influence church attendance, member retention and growth requires empirical investigation rather than assumption.

A further problem relates to leadership and church atmosphere. Poor leadership practices, inadequate communication, unresolved conflicts, authoritarian behaviour or lack of pastoral care can negatively influence the experience of church members. Since the New Testament places strong emphasis on servant leadership, love, unity and mutual care, an unhealthy relational environment may contradict the church’s biblical identity and potentially discourage participation.

Another concern is member-to-member relationships. People do not experience the church only through sermons and worship services; they also experience it through relationships with other members. A congregation characterized by genuine friendship, acceptance, care and fellowship may encourage members to remain committed. In contrast, cliques, discrimination, gossip, conflict and lack of acceptance may discourage newcomers and existing members.

The issue of hospitality also presents a problem. Churches may conduct evangelistic programmes designed to attract visitors, but the experience of the visitor after arrival may determine whether that person returns. An unfriendly reception, poor information, disorganized ushering, inadequate children’s arrangements or difficulty finding a place to park may negatively influence the visitor’s perception of the congregation.

Another problem is that church growth is sometimes measured primarily through numerical attendance. Such measurement may fail to distinguish between genuine discipleship and temporary increases in attendance. Warren (1995) argues for a focus on church health and the development of biblical purposes rather than treating numerical growth as the sole measure of congregational success.

The Nigerian context adds another dimension to the problem. The proliferation of churches has created a highly diverse Christian landscape. Onah and Agbo (2021) note the rapid increase of churches in Nigeria and highlight the paradox that church proliferation can occur alongside persistent social and moral problems. Consequently, the existence of many churches does not necessarily mean that every congregation is experiencing healthy growth or effectively fulfilling its Christian mission.

The problem is also relevant to Abuja because of the city’s rapid urban development. Abuja continues to experience urban expansion and associated infrastructural and social challenges. Churches therefore operate within communities where accessibility, mobility, security, housing patterns and changing social relationships can influence participation in religious activities.

Furthermore, churches in Abuja are increasingly responding to changes in society through community engagement, innovative worship and digital strategies. Adeoye (2024) specifically identifies community engagement, innovative worship practices and digital technologies among the adaptive strategies employed by churches in Abuja and Lagos. This suggests that the environment of contemporary churches is changing and that congregations must understand the expectations and circumstances of the people they seek to serve.

Despite these developments, there remains a need for empirical investigation into how members perceive the environment of their churches and whether those perceptions are related to church growth. Without such evidence, church leaders may continue to make substantial investments in buildings, programmes and organizational structures without knowing which environmental factors most strongly support participation, retention and growth.

The central problem of this study, therefore, is the uncertainty surrounding the impact of the church environment on church growth among selected churches in FCT Abuja. The study seeks to determine whether aspects of the physical, relational, spiritual, organizational and social environment of churches have meaningful relationships with church growth.

Specifically, the study will investigate whether a welcoming and supportive environment contributes to member retention and participation; whether adequate physical facilities encourage attendance; whether leadership and interpersonal relationships influence commitment; whether youth and children’s programmes contribute to family participation; and whether community engagement strengthens the church’s capacity to attract and retain members.

The study will focus on five selected churches in FCT Abuja in order to provide a comparative perspective. Rather than assuming that one environmental factor determines growth, the study will examine the combined influence of several environmental dimensions. The findings are expected to provide useful information for church leaders, pastors, administrators, theologians and Christian educators seeking to develop healthy congregational environments.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The general purpose of this study is to examine the impact of church environment on church growth among five selected churches in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. examine the relationship between the physical environment of churches and church growth in FCT Abuja;
  2. determine the influence of leadership and organizational environment on church growth;
  3. examine the influence of interpersonal relationships and fellowship on church growth;
  4. assess the effect of worship atmosphere and church programmes on members’ participation and retention;

1.4 Research Questions

The study will be guided by the following research questions:

  1. What relationship exists between the physical environment of churches and church growth in FCT Abuja?
  2. How does leadership and organizational environment influence church growth?
  3. What influence do interpersonal relationships and fellowship have on church growth?
  4. How does the worship atmosphere affect members’ participation and retention?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between church environment and church growth among the five selected churches in FCT Abuja.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to church leaders because it will provide information concerning environmental factors that may encourage or discourage church participation and growth. Pastors and administrators may use the findings to identify areas requiring improvement within their congregations.

The study will be beneficial to church members because it will provide an opportunity for their experiences and perceptions concerning the church environment to be considered. Their responses may help church leadership understand how members experience facilities, relationships, worship, leadership and church programmes.

The study will also be useful to prospective visitors and new members because it may identify environmental factors that contribute to a sense of welcome, belonging and commitment within a congregation.

The study will be valuable to theological educators and students of Christian Religious Studies. It will provide an opportunity to examine church growth not only from theological and evangelistic perspectives but also from organizational, relational and environmental perspectives.

The research may also assist Christian organizations and denominational leaders in developing policies and guidelines concerning church administration, hospitality, member care, youth ministry, children’s ministry, community engagement and facility management.

Furthermore, the study will contribute to existing literature on church growth in Nigeria. Much of the classical church-growth literature emerged from Western contexts, while contemporary African urban Christianity presents its own social and cultural realities. A study situated in Abuja can therefore contribute contextual information concerning church growth within a Nigerian metropolitan setting.

Finally, the study will be useful to future researchers. It may serve as a basis for further studies examining church environment, church health, congregational retention, Christian hospitality, urban ministry and church growth in other parts of Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study is limited to the impact of church environment on church growth among five selected churches in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The study will focus on selected dimensions of church environment, including:

  • physical facilities and general appearance;
  • location and accessibility;
  • cleanliness and comfort;
  • security and safety;
  • leadership and administration;
  • interpersonal relationships and fellowship;
  • worship atmosphere;
  • hospitality and reception of visitors;
  • children’s and youth programmes;
  • member participation;
  • communication;
  • community engagement; and
  • general spiritual atmosphere.

Church growth will be considered in terms of indicators such as attendance, membership increase, member retention, participation in church activities, evangelistic involvement and perceived spiritual development.

The study will be restricted to five selected churches in FCT Abuja. The names of the churches will be specified according to the actual churches selected for the research. The study will not claim that its findings represent every church in Abuja or Nigeria.
