THE IMPACT OF DIGITAL LITERACY ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY OF SELECTED SCHOOLS IN LAGOS STATE
1.1 Background of the Study
Digital literacy refers to the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate, and create information using a range of digital technologies (Ng, 2012). In the 21st century, digital literacy is no longer optional; it has become a fundamental skill for students, especially in secondary schools, as it directly influences their learning, problem-solving abilities, and academic performance (Spante et al., 2018). The integration of digital tools in education, such as computers, tablets, educational software, and online learning platforms, has transformed traditional teaching methods and learning experiences in schools globally.
In Nigeria, the adoption of digital technologies in education has been growing, particularly in urban centers like Lagos State, due to government initiatives and private sector investment in ICT infrastructure. Digital literacy equips students with skills in information search, critical analysis, content creation, and online collaboration, which are essential for academic success (Adebayo, 2020). Despite these benefits, many Nigerian secondary schools face challenges, including inadequate access to digital devices, insufficient teacher training in ICT, and inconsistent internet connectivity, which hinder the effective implementation of digital literacy programs (Olufunke & Omotayo, 2019).
Empirical studies have shown a positive correlation between digital literacy and academic performance. 1.2 Statement of the Problem
The Nigerian education system faces a persistent challenge of improving students’ academic performance, particularly in secondary schools. While curriculum reforms and instructional strategies have been implemented over the years, students continue to underperform in national examinations (Federal Ministry of Education, 2021). One factor that has gained attention in recent years is digital literacy, which has become a critical determinant of students’ ability to access information, engage in self-directed learning, and apply knowledge effectively.
Despite the increasing recognition of digital literacy’s importance, many secondary school students in Lagos State struggle with low levels of digital competency. This research seeks to fill this gap by examining how students’ digital literacy levels influence their academic achievements and by providing evidence-based recommendations to enhance digital education strategies in Nigerian secondary schools.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of digital literacy on students’ academic performance in Nigerian secondary schools. The specific objectives are:

1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of digital literacy on students’ academic performance in selected secondary schools in Lagos State. The study specifically examines students’ digital literacy skills, the relationship between these skills and academic performance, and the challenges faced in acquiring digital literacy.
