INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The growth and sustainability of the Christian church have remained central concerns in contemporary ecclesiology, especially within Pentecostal movements that emphasize evangelism, revival, and rapid numerical expansion. However, while many churches experience significant growth through evangelistic outreach, a recurring challenge has been the inability to retain new converts over time. This phenomenon has raised concerns among church leaders and scholars regarding the effectiveness of post-conversion care, particularly discipleship training.

Discipleship training refers to the systematic process of nurturing new believers into mature Christians through teaching, mentoring, spiritual guidance, and practical involvement in church life. According to The Master Plan of Evangelism, discipleship is not merely about winning souls but about investing time and effort to develop committed followers of Christ who can in turn disciple others. This perspective highlights that evangelism without discipleship is incomplete and unsustainable.

In many Pentecostal churches, particularly in urban centres such as Abuja, Nigeria, there is often strong emphasis on evangelistic programmes such as crusades, revivals, and outreach campaigns. While these efforts result in numerous conversions, a significant number of these new believers gradually disengage from church activities due to inadequate spiritual grounding. This challenge points to weaknesses in structured discipleship systems that are meant to nurture and integrate converts into the church community.

Furthermore, scholars such as Understanding Church Growth emphasize that sustainable church growth is not only numerical but also qualitative, involving the retention and spiritual maturity of members. Without effective discipleship training, churches risk losing the very converts they have worked hard to win, thereby affecting long-term stability and growth.

In the Nigerian Pentecostal context, discipleship training is increasingly being recognized as a critical factor in addressing member retention challenges. Churches that invest in Bible study, mentorship programs, leadership training, and small group fellowships tend to experience higher retention rates compared to those that focus solely on evangelistic activities. Therefore, understanding the impact of discipleship training on member retention becomes essential for strengthening church growth strategies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing number of Pentecostal churches and evangelistic activities in Abuja, Nigeria, many churches continue to experience a high rate of member loss after conversion. While large numbers of individuals respond to altar calls during crusades and church programmes, only a small percentage remain active and committed members after a period of time.

This situation raises a serious concern about the effectiveness of discipleship training within these churches. In many cases, new converts are not adequately followed up, properly taught, or systematically integrated into the church’s spiritual structure. As a result, they struggle with spiritual stability, doctrinal understanding, and commitment to church life.

Another major issue is the inconsistency in discipleship programmes across different Pentecostal churches. While some churches have structured Bible schools and mentorship systems, others lack formal discipleship frameworks, relying instead on occasional teachings or informal guidance. This inconsistency contributes to varying levels of member retention.

If this trend continues, Pentecostal churches may continue to experience numerical growth without corresponding spiritual depth or stability, thereby weakening long-term church development. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the impact of discipleship training on member retention in selected Pentecostal churches in Abuja, Nigeria.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of discipleship training on member retention in selected Pentecostal churches in Abuja, Nigeria.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Assess the relationship between discipleship training and member retention.
2. Examine the extent of discipleship programmes in selected Pentecostal churches.
3. Determine the challenges affecting effective discipleship training.
4. Evaluate the influence of discipleship training on spiritual growth and commitment of members.

1.4 Research Question

The study is guided by the following research questions:

   2. To what extent are discipleship programmes implemented in selected Pentecostal churches in Abuja?
   3. What challenges affect effective discipleship training in selected Pentecostal churches in Abuja?
   4. How does discipleship training influence the spiritual growth and commitment of church members in selected Pentecostal churches in Abuja?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between discipleship training and member retention in selected Pentecostal churches in Abuja, Nigeria.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between discipleship training and member retention in selected Pentecostal churches in Abuja, Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to pastors, church leaders, theologians, and Christian educators by highlighting the importance of structured discipleship in church growth. It will also provide practical insights for improving member retention strategies in Pentecostal churches. Additionally, it will contribute to academic literature on church growth, discipleship, and pastoral ministry in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to selected Pentecostal churches in Abuja, Nigeria. It focuses specifically on discipleship training and its impact on member retention. The respondents include pastors, church workers, and members involved in discipleship programmes.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Discipleship Training: A structured process of teaching and mentoring new believers to grow in Christian faith and maturity.
• Member Retention: The ability of a church to maintain active and committed members over time.
• Pentecostal Churches: Christian denominations that emphasize the baptism of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, and evangelism.
• Church Growth: The numerical and spiritual increase of a church through evangelism and discipleship.
