THE IMPACT OF DIVORCE ON THE SPIRITUAL LIFE AND CHURCH PARTICIPATION OF CHRISTIAN BELIEVERS IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA

1.1 Background of the Study

Divorce has increasingly become a social phenomenon with far-reaching implications across personal, familial, and community life. In Nigeria, divorce rates have been steadily rising due to socio-economic, cultural, and psychological factors, including domestic violence, infidelity, financial disagreements, and incompatible life goals (Okeke, 2018). Lagos State, being one of the most populous and urbanized states in Nigeria, reflects these national trends, with a growing number of Christian couples seeking separation or legal dissolution of marriage (Adebayo, 2020). While the sociological and economic consequences of divorce are widely documented, its spiritual ramifications remain underexplored, particularly in the context of Christian believers and their participation in church life.

The Christian faith places a high value on marital commitment, often viewing marriage as a sacred covenant before God. Divorce, therefore, may not only disrupt the family structure but also influence the spiritual and religious orientation of individuals. According to biblical teachings, marriage is a lifelong covenant ordained by God (Malachi 2:14-16; Matthew 19:6), and divorce is generally discouraged except under exceptional circumstances (Matthew 19:9). Thus, divorce can trigger guilt, spiritual distress, and feelings of alienation, potentially leading to diminished church attendance, disengagement from ministry activities, and a weakened personal relationship with God (Amadi, 2019; Eze, 2021).

Furthermore, divorce often impacts the individual’s psychological well-being, including increased levels of anxiety, depression, and social stigma (Nwankwo, 2017). These psychological and emotional consequences can hinder spiritual growth, reduce participation in communal worship, and challenge the believer’s commitment to church doctrines and practices. While some divorced individuals may find solace and support within church communities, others may distance themselves from church life entirely due to shame, judgment, or perceived spiritual failure (Ogunleye, 2019).

Given the strong interconnection between faith, church participation, and personal spiritual development, it is crucial to examine how divorce affects Christian believers in Lagos State, especially as churches remain central to the moral, social, and spiritual life of Nigerian Christians. Understanding these dynamics can inform pastoral care, counseling strategies, and church policies that aim to support divorced members and foster spiritual resilience.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Divorce poses significant challenges not only to the family unit but also to the spiritual well-being of individuals involved. Many Christian believers who experience divorce often report a decline in personal spiritual practices, including prayer, Bible study, and engagement in church activities. There is evidence that divorced believers may struggle with guilt, shame, and a sense of spiritual inadequacy, which can lead to reduced church attendance and lower participation in church programs (Amadi, 2019; Eze, 2021).

In Lagos State, the lack of empirical research on the specific impact of divorce on the spiritual life of Christian believers presents a gap in both theological understanding and pastoral practice. While churches often provide counseling and support programs, there is limited data on how these interventions address the spiritual and participatory needs of divorced members. Additionally, existing studies tend to focus on the socio-economic effects of divorce, neglecting its potential disruption to religious engagement and spiritual growth (Nwankwo, 2017).

Consequently, church leaders, counselors, and policymakers lack sufficient insights into how divorce influences spiritual life and participation in religious activities. This knowledge gap can hinder the development of effective pastoral care strategies and community support systems for divorced believers. This study seeks to address this problem by investigating the relationship between divorce and the spiritual engagement of Christian believers in Lagos State, thereby providing data-driven recommendations for enhancing church support and spiritual resilience among divorced members.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How does divorce affect the personal spiritual life of Christian believers in Lagos State?

2. What is the impact of divorce on church attendance and participation in church activities among Christian believers?

3. What are the challenges faced by divorced Christian believers in maintaining their spiritual and religious commitments?

4. How can churches provide effective support to divorced members to enhance their spiritual life and participation?

1.4 Objective of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of divorce on the spiritual life and church participation of Christian believers in Lagos State, Nigeria. The specific objectives include:

1. To assess the effect of divorce on the personal spiritual life of Christian believers.

2. To examine the influence of divorce on church attendance and participation in church programs.

3. To identify challenges faced by divorced believers in sustaining spiritual engagement.

4. To recommend strategies for churches to support divorced members effectively.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Divorce has no significant impact on the spiritual life and church participation of Christian believers in Lagos State.
H₁: Divorce has a significant impact on the spiritual life and church participation of Christian believers in Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. First, it provides empirical evidence on the spiritual consequences of divorce, contributing to theological and sociological knowledge. Second, the findings can guide church leaders and counselors in designing targeted pastoral care programs for divorced members, fostering spiritual healing and reintegration. Third, the study highlights the challenges faced by divorced believers, informing policy and program development within church communities. Finally, it provides a foundation for further research on the intersection of family dissolution and spiritual life among Christians in urban Nigerian contexts.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on Christian believers in Lagos State, Nigeria, who have experienced divorce. The research covers the impact of divorce on personal spiritual life, including prayer, Bible study, and devotional activities, as well as church participation, such as attendance, ministry involvement, and engagement in fellowship programs. The study does not focus on other religious groups or non-divorced individuals.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Divorce: Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage by a competent authority (Okeke, 2018). In this study, it refers to the formal termination of a marital union among Christian believers, resulting in separation from the spouse and associated changes in family and social dynamics.

Spiritual Life: Spiritual life refers to an individual’s personal relationship with God, including practices such as prayer, Bible study, worship, meditation, and adherence to Christian principles (Amadi, 2019). It reflects the depth of one’s faith and moral commitment in daily living.

Church Participation: Church participation denotes the active involvement of a believer in church-related activities, including attendance at worship services, engagement in fellowship programs, ministry activities, and contributions to church growth and community (Ogunleye, 2019).

Christian Believers: Christian believers are individuals who identify with Christianity, adhere to its teachings, and practice its doctrines in daily life. For this study, the focus is on adult Christians residing in Lagos State who have experienced divorce.

Pastoral Care: Pastoral care is the guidance, counseling, and support provided by church leaders to members of the congregation, particularly during times of personal, spiritual, or social challenges (Eze, 2021).

Psychological Distress: Psychological distress refers to emotional and mental strain resulting from divorce, which may manifest as anxiety, depression, guilt, or feelings of inadequacy that affect spiritual practices and social engagement (Nwankwo, 2017).

Urban Context: Urban context refers to the metropolitan and densely populated environment of Lagos State, Nigeria, where social, cultural, and religious dynamics influence family life, divorce rates, and church engagement.

Faith Reintegration: Faith reintegration is the process through which divorced believers restore their spiritual life and re-engage actively in church activities after experiencing separation or divorce (Amadi, 2019).
