Project – The impact of Economic knowledge on the youths. A case study of Fadiya.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Economic knowledge is an essential component of youth development in every society. It equips young people with the cognitive and practical skills needed to understand how economies function and how their individual actions contribute to broader economic outcomes. This knowledge enables them to make informed financial and business decisions that shape their personal welfare and influence national economic progress (Oboh & Ajayi, 2019). In a globalized world where economies are increasingly interconnected, the ability of youths to comprehend and respond effectively to economic challenges has become a fundamental determinant of sustainable national growth and competitiveness.
In developing economies such as Nigeria, the importance of economic literacy cannot be overstated. The country continues to grapple with issues such as high unemployment, inflation, and income inequality, which hinder inclusive growth and poverty reduction (Adewale, 2020). Youths represent a significant portion of Nigeria’s population, and their economic engagement is critical to achieving sustainable development. However, without adequate economic knowledge, many young people are ill-equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern economy or to participate productively in the labor market. Economic education, therefore, serves as both a preventive and transformative tool for addressing youth-related economic challenges.
Economic education helps individuals understand concepts such as budgeting, saving, investment, entrepreneurship, and the broader workings of the economy (Nwosu & Onah, 2021). It fosters the development of rational decision-making skills that are necessary for managing personal finances and evaluating business opportunities. Youths who possess sound economic knowledge are better positioned to plan for their futures, invest in income-generating ventures, and avoid financial pitfalls such as excessive debt and reckless spending (Ogunyemi & Ojo, 2018). This understanding also cultivates self-reliance and responsible citizenship, as economically literate individuals are more likely to contribute meaningfully to national productivity.
Conversely, inadequate economic knowledge can have severe consequences for individuals and societies. Youths who lack financial literacy are more prone to poor decision-making, economic dependency, and vulnerability to fraud or exploitation. In many developing nations, the absence of structured economic education has been linked to unemployment, low entrepreneurial participation, and weak savings culture (Eze & Okoro, 2021). This situation perpetuates cycles of poverty and underdevelopment, making it imperative for policymakers and educators to prioritize economic education as a key component of youth development initiatives.
Fadiya community, like many rural and semi-urban settlements in Nigeria, faces its share of economic challenges. The area is characterized by limited access to formal education, scarce employment opportunities, and low income levels. Many of the youths in Fadiya engage in subsistence farming, informal trading, or low-wage labor, often without adequate knowledge of how to expand their ventures or manage their finances effectively (Abubakar & Bello, 2022). The absence of economic education and exposure further restricts their capacity to innovate or contribute meaningfully to community development.
The level of economic awareness among youths in such communities can determine their financial independence and overall quality of life. When young people understand how to manage their resources, identify investment opportunities, and utilize modern financial tools, they are more likely to achieve economic stability and contribute to local development (Akinola, 2019). Moreover, economic knowledge can stimulate entrepreneurial interest, thereby creating employment and fostering community resilience in the face of economic shocks.
Understanding how economic knowledge affects the attitudes, aspirations, and behaviors of youths in Fadiya is crucial for designing effective empowerment strategies. It offers insights into how education, training, and mentorship can be aligned with the economic realities of rural and semi-urban communities. Such understanding will help bridge the gap between theoretical economic concepts taught in schools and their practical application in everyday life, leading to more effective outcomes in poverty alleviation and self-reliance among youths (Nwosu & Onah, 2021).
Ultimately, the acquisition of economic knowledge by the youths in Fadiya is not merely an academic exercise but a catalyst for sustainable development. When empowered with the right economic information and practical skills, youths become agents of change—driving entrepreneurship, innovation, and productivity within their communities. Thus, this study seeks to explore the extent to which economic knowledge influences youth empowerment in Fadiya, with the broader aim of contributing to Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous government and non-governmental efforts to promote economic education in Nigeria, a significant proportion of youths still display a limited understanding of essential economic concepts such as entrepreneurship, saving, investment, inflation, and resource management (Akinola, 2019). This limited economic awareness manifests in poor financial decisions, lack of investment culture, and an inability to identify viable business opportunities. Many young people do not possess the analytical and decision-making skills required to navigate an increasingly competitive economic environment. Consequently, the promise of economic education as a tool for personal and national development remains largely unrealized among the Nigerian youth population.
Although the Nigerian educational system incorporates Economics as a subject at both secondary and tertiary levels, the teaching of economic concepts is often theoretical, exam-oriented, and detached from real-life applications (Oboh & Ajayi, 2019). Students may memorize definitions and principles but fail to translate this knowledge into practical financial or entrepreneurial behavior. The gap between classroom learning and practical economic participation limits the effectiveness of economic education in empowering youths to achieve self-reliance and innovation. This disconnect contributes to a persistent culture of dependency and passive economic engagement among young people.
In communities like Fadiya, this problem is more pronounced. The majority of youths in such areas are either unemployed, underemployed, or engaged in informal economic activities that yield little or no long-term benefit (Abubakar & Bello, 2022). The lack of access to relevant economic knowledge prevents them from utilizing modern financial tools or capitalizing on government and private-sector empowerment initiatives. This deficiency results in continued cycles of poverty, limited entrepreneurship, and reduced community development. The inability of the youth to apply economic principles to real-world problems hinders their capacity to make informed decisions about saving, investing, and resource utilization.
Furthermore, many young people in Fadiya depend heavily on external assistance from parents, relatives, or social programs, rather than creating sustainable sources of income through informed economic action. This culture of dependency weakens the foundation for economic independence and growth within the community. The absence of structured financial education programs or local mentorship opportunities also aggravates the situation, leaving many youths ill-prepared to face the realities of a competitive economy (Eze & Okoro, 2021). As a result, the potential of the youth population to drive local development remains largely untapped.
In addition, the rapid technological and economic transformations occurring in Nigeria and globally have intensified the need for economic literacy. Youths who lack adequate understanding of modern economic systems—such as digital finance, e-commerce, and investment markets—are at risk of being excluded from emerging opportunities (Adewale, 2020). Without proper guidance and practical exposure, these young people remain marginalized, unable to fully contribute to the growth and sustainability of their communities. This gap in knowledge and skills continues to widen the socio-economic divide between informed and uninformed groups of young Nigerians.
Therefore, it becomes necessary to critically examine how economic knowledge—or the lack thereof—affects the attitudes, aspirations, and economic participation of youths in Fadiya. Understanding this relationship will not only shed light on the specific challenges facing the community’s youth but will also guide the development of more effective economic education programs and empowerment initiatives. By exploring the impact of economic knowledge on the behaviors and economic outcomes of young people, this study seeks to provide evidence-based recommendations that can promote youth self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and community development in Fadiya and beyond.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of economic knowledge on the youths in Fadiya. The specific objectives are to:
- Examine the level of economic knowledge possessed by youths in Fadiya.
- Determine the relationship between economic knowledge and youths’ financial decision-making.
- Investigate how economic knowledge influences entrepreneurial engagement among youths.
- Assess the extent to which economic education contributes to youth empowerment and self-reliance.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following research questions:
- What is the level of economic knowledge among youths in Fadiya?
- How does economic knowledge influence the financial decision-making of youths?
- What relationship exists between economic knowledge and entrepreneurial involvement among youths?
- In what ways does economic education contribute to youth empowerment and self-reliance in Fadiya?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
To guide the study, the following hypothesis is formulated and will be tested:
H₀: Economic knowledge has no significant impact on the empowerment of youths in Fadiya.
H₁: Economic knowledge has a significant impact on the empowerment of youths in Fadiya.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides a clearer and more detailed understanding of how economic knowledge shapes the behavior, decision-making, and financial attitudes of youths. In an era where youth unemployment and economic instability are prevalent, understanding the role of economic knowledge becomes a critical step toward fostering a generation of financially responsible and economically empowered individuals. The findings from this study will shed light on how awareness of economic principles influences youths’ ability to plan, save, invest, and engage in productive ventures that can improve their personal well-being and contribute to the socio-economic growth of their communities.
For educators, this research offers valuable insights into the effectiveness of current economic education strategies and the need for curriculum reform. Many schools teach economics as a theoretical subject, but this study emphasizes the importance of practical and experiential learning. Teachers and curriculum developers can use the findings to introduce teaching methods that link classroom lessons with real-life applications such as entrepreneurship training, budgeting exercises, and community-based financial projects. In this way, the study supports the broader goal of education as a tool for equipping learners with life-relevant skills (Nwosu & Onah, 2021).
Policymakers will also find this study useful as it provides empirical evidence on the relationship between economic literacy and youth empowerment. Understanding this link can guide the design of public policies and programs aimed at reducing youth unemployment and promoting financial inclusion. Governments and development agencies can leverage the results of this study to establish youth-oriented initiatives such as financial literacy campaigns, entrepreneurship funding schemes, and economic mentoring programs. These interventions, when properly executed, can lead to more sustainable economic outcomes and reduce dependency on external financial aid (Adewale, 2020).
Community leaders and local organizations in Fadiya will benefit from the study’s findings by gaining a deeper appreciation of the economic challenges faced by young people in their locality. With this understanding, they can organize community-based workshops and sensitization programs that promote savings culture, cooperative societies, and small-scale entrepreneurship. The study also provides a framework for local stakeholders to collaborate with educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies in implementing youth empowerment initiatives tailored to the unique economic realities of Fadiya (Abubakar & Bello, 2022).
For the youths themselves, the study has direct personal and social relevance. It may inspire greater interest in economic learning, self-employment, and financial independence. By understanding how knowledge of economic principles can improve their quality of life, youths in Fadiya may become more proactive in seeking education, engaging in entrepreneurial ventures, and managing their finances effectively (Eze & Okoro, 2021). This behavioral transformation can gradually lead to broader community development as economically empowered youths contribute to employment creation and poverty reduction.
Finally, the study will contribute to the existing body of academic literature on youth empowerment, financial literacy, and economic education in Nigeria. It provides a localized case study of Fadiya that adds depth to the national discourse on economic empowerment and development. Future researchers can build upon its findings to explore related areas such as gender differences in economic literacy, the role of digital finance in youth development, and the long-term impact of economic education on community well-being. In essence, the study not only addresses an immediate societal need but also lays a foundation for continuous research and policy innovation aimed at achieving economic self-sufficiency among Nigerian youths.
