INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Christianity is centered on the life, ministry, death, resurrection, and teachings of Jesus Christ. The teachings of Jesus remain the foundation upon which Christian faith and practice are built. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus taught principles that focused on love, holiness, obedience, faith, humility, forgiveness, righteousness, and service to God and humanity. These teachings continue to influence the spiritual lives of believers across different denominations and cultures. Spiritual growth among church members is often measured through increased faith, moral transformation, commitment to God, and active participation in Christian activities.

Jesus Christ used several methods in communicating His teachings, including parables, sermons, illustrations, miracles, and personal examples. One of His most notable teachings is found in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), where He emphasized righteousness, prayer, mercy, purity, and love for enemies. These teachings were designed not only to instruct listeners intellectually but also to transform their hearts and lifestyles. According to Adeyemo (2015), the teachings of Jesus provide practical guidelines for Christian living and are essential for spiritual maturity among believers.

Spiritual growth is a gradual process through which Christians develop a deeper relationship with God and become more Christ-like in character and conduct. It involves prayer, Bible study, obedience to God’s word, fellowship with other believers, and the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian. Spiritual growth also reflects in moral behavior, emotional stability, commitment to service, and increased understanding of biblical truths. Hull (2014) explains that spiritual growth occurs when believers consistently apply the teachings of Christ to their daily lives.

In many churches today, pastors and church leaders place strong emphasis on the teachings of Jesus because they are considered the standard for Christian discipleship. Members who follow the teachings of Jesus are expected to demonstrate love, peace, patience, kindness, humility, and faithfulness. These virtues contribute greatly to personal spiritual development and healthy church growth. Stott (2016) argues that authentic Christian spirituality is rooted in obedience to the teachings of Christ and not merely in religious activities.

The importance of Jesus’ teachings can also be seen in their transformative effect on society. His teachings promote peace, forgiveness, justice, compassion, and unity among people. The commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31) encourages believers to live harmoniously with others and to practice selflessness. In addition, Jesus taught His followers the importance of prayer, faith, and dependence on God. These teachings strengthen believers spiritually and help them overcome challenges and temptations in life.

Despite the availability of biblical teachings in churches today, many Christians still struggle with spiritual immaturity, lack of commitment, weak faith, and worldly lifestyles. Some members attend church regularly but do not demonstrate evidence of spiritual transformation in their daily lives. This situation raises concerns about whether the teachings of Jesus are properly understood, taught, or applied among church members. According to Warren (2012), spiritual growth cannot occur effectively unless believers intentionally study and practice the teachings of Christ.

Furthermore, modern society presents numerous distractions such as materialism, social media influence, secularism, and moral decline, which negatively affect the spiritual lives of believers. Many Christians prioritize worldly success above spiritual development, thereby weakening their relationship with God. In some churches, emphasis is placed more on prosperity, miracles, and material blessings than on sound biblical teachings and discipleship. This imbalance may hinder genuine spiritual growth among members.

The teachings of Jesus remain relevant in addressing the spiritual challenges facing Christians today. Through teachings on faith, repentance, forgiveness, humility, and holiness, believers are encouraged to live according to God’s will. Church leaders therefore have a responsibility to continually teach and explain the doctrines of Christ in ways that promote spiritual maturity among members. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Jesus’ teachings on members’ spiritual growth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The teachings of Jesus Christ are meant to guide Christians toward spiritual maturity, moral uprightness, and deeper fellowship with God. However, despite the consistent preaching and teaching of the Bible in many churches, there appears to be a growing decline in the spiritual lives of some church members. Many Christians still struggle with issues such as lack of faith, disobedience to God’s word, moral compromise, unforgiveness, hatred, disunity, and weak commitment to spiritual activities. These problems suggest that the teachings of Jesus may not be effectively influencing the lives of many believers as expected.

In recent times, there has been increasing concern among church leaders and Christian scholars regarding the superficial nature of Christianity among many church members. Some believers attend church regularly but fail to exhibit Christ-like character in their behavior and relationships. The values of humility, love, honesty, patience, forgiveness, and holiness taught by Jesus are often neglected in daily living. This has resulted in spiritual instability, church conflicts, declining moral standards, and reduced commitment to Christian service.

Another problem is that many churches now focus heavily on prosperity, entertainment, and material success rather than on discipleship and the practical application of Jesus’ teachings. As a result, some members become more interested in receiving blessings than in developing spiritually. The lack of proper understanding and application of Christ’s teachings may contribute to spiritual stagnation among believers.

Additionally, societal influences such as secularism, peer pressure, technological distractions, and moral corruption have negatively affected the spiritual commitment of many Christians. Some church members are easily influenced by worldly lifestyles that contradict biblical teachings. This situation raises questions about the extent to which Jesus’ teachings still impact the spiritual growth of church members in contemporary society.

Although several studies have examined church growth and Christian living, limited attention has been given specifically to the impact of Jesus’ teachings on the spiritual growth of members. It is therefore necessary to investigate how the teachings of Jesus influence the spiritual lives, attitudes, and behaviors of church members. This study is undertaken to fill this gap and provide a better understanding of the role of Jesus’ teachings in promoting spiritual growth among believers.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Jesus’ teachings on members’ spiritual growth.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the teachings of Jesus that promote spiritual growth among church members;
2. determine the extent to which church members apply the teachings of Jesus in their daily lives;
3. identify the factors hindering members from practicing the teachings of Jesus;
4. examine the relationship between Jesus’ teachings and members’ spiritual maturity;
5. suggest possible ways of improving spiritual growth through the teachings of Jesus.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What teachings of Jesus promote spiritual growth among church members?
2. To what extent do church members apply the teachings of Jesus in their daily lives?
3. What factors hinder members from practicing the teachings of Jesus?
4. What is the relationship between Jesus’ teachings and members’ spiritual maturity?
5. How can spiritual growth among members be improved through the teachings of Jesus?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to church leaders, pastors, Christian educators, theology students, church members, and future researchers.

Church leaders and pastors will benefit from the findings of this study by understanding the importance of emphasizing the teachings of Jesus in sermons, Bible studies, and discipleship programs. The study will help them develop effective strategies for promoting spiritual growth among members.

Christian educators and theology students will find the study useful as academic material for understanding the relevance of Jesus’ teachings in Christian development and discipleship. The study will also contribute to existing literature on spiritual growth and Christian living.

Church members will benefit from the study by gaining a better understanding of how the teachings of Jesus can positively influence their spiritual lives, moral conduct, and relationship with God. The study will encourage believers to practice biblical principles in their daily activities.

Future researchers will also benefit from this work as it will serve as a reference material for further studies related to Christian teachings, discipleship, and spiritual growth.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of Jesus’ teachings on members’ spiritual growth. The study examines the teachings of Jesus, their application among church members, factors affecting spiritual growth, and the role of biblical teachings in developing spiritually mature Christians. The study is limited to selected churches and members within the study area.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

Impact

Impact refers to the effect or influence that one thing has on another.

Jesus’ Teachings

Jesus’ teachings refer to the instructions, doctrines, principles, and messages delivered by Jesus Christ as recorded in the Holy Bible.

Spiritual Growth

Spiritual growth is the process of becoming spiritually mature through obedience to God, prayer, Bible study, and the practice of Christian values.

Church Members

Church members are individuals who belong to and participate in the activities and worship of a Christian church.
