Project – The Impact of Leadership Style on Church Growth and Development: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Edo State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Leadership is a critical factor in the success and growth of any organization, including religious institutions. In the church context, leadership refers to the ability of church leaders such as pastors, bishops, elders, and ministry heads to influence, guide, and direct members toward achieving spiritual and organizational goals. Effective leadership is essential for church growth, development, unity, and sustainability. According to Northouse (2018), leadership is the process by which an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.
In the 21st century, churches are experiencing rapid growth, expansion, and diversification, especially within Pentecostal denominations. This growth has made leadership more complex and demanding. Church leaders are expected not only to provide spiritual guidance but also to manage administrative duties, financial responsibilities, human resources, and organizational structures. Yukl (2013) explains that leadership effectiveness is determined by how well leaders influence organizational performance and coordinate activities toward achieving set objectives.
Biblically, leadership plays a central role in God’s plan for His people. The Bible presents several leadership models, including Moses’ leadership over Israel, David’s kingship, and Jesus Christ’s servant leadership model. Jesus demonstrated transformational leadership by guiding, teaching, and mentoring His disciples. In Matthew 20:26–28, Jesus emphasized servant leadership by stating that whoever desires to be great must serve others. This biblical model remains relevant to modern church leadership.
In Pentecostal churches, leadership style significantly influences church growth and development. Leadership style refers to the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. Common leadership styles include autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire, transactional, and transformational leadership. According to Bass and Riggio (2006), transformational leadership is most effective in promoting organizational change, motivation, and growth.
Church growth refers to the numerical increase, spiritual development, and organizational expansion of the church. It includes evangelism, discipleship, membership retention, leadership development, and church planting. Warren (2004) argues that healthy churches grow when leadership is effective, vision is clear, and members are actively engaged in ministry activities.
In Nigeria, Pentecostal churches have experienced significant growth over the past decades. The South-South region, particularly Edo State, has witnessed the expansion of several Pentecostal denominations due to increased evangelism and church planting efforts. However, leadership effectiveness remains a key determinant of whether such growth is sustained or declines.
In selected Pentecostal churches in Edo State, leadership styles vary depending on the personality and management approach of church leaders. Some leaders adopt participatory leadership styles that encourage member involvement, while others adopt more centralized approaches. These leadership styles have direct implications on church unity, member participation, and organizational effectiveness.
According to Hybels (2009), visionary leadership is essential for church growth because it provides direction, motivation, and clarity of purpose. Without effective leadership, churches may experience stagnation, internal conflict, and declining membership. Therefore, leadership style is a major factor influencing church development in contemporary society.
This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of leadership style on church growth and development in selected Pentecostal churches in Edo State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the rapid expansion of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, many churches still struggle with issues related to leadership effectiveness and sustainable growth. Leadership style has been identified as a major factor influencing church performance, yet many church leaders lack adequate understanding of how their leadership approach affects church development.
In some Pentecostal churches, authoritarian leadership styles dominate decision-making processes, limiting members’ participation and reducing motivation. This often leads to dissatisfaction, lack of engagement, and reduced commitment among church members. Northouse (2018) notes that ineffective leadership styles can negatively affect organizational morale and performance.
Furthermore, some churches experience leadership conflicts, poor succession planning, and lack of vision clarity. These challenges hinder church growth and create instability within the church structure. Yukl (2013) emphasizes that poor leadership coordination often results in organizational inefficiency and reduced productivity.
In selected Pentecostal churches in Edo State, there are concerns about inconsistent leadership practices that affect church growth and development. Some churches experience rapid growth initially but later face stagnation due to ineffective leadership structures and poor management styles. This raises concerns about the sustainability of such growth.
Another issue is the lack of adaptability among some church leaders to modern leadership approaches such as transformational and participatory leadership styles. In a rapidly changing society, churches require leaders who can inspire, motivate, and adapt to new challenges, including technological advancements and generational shifts.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the impact of leadership style on church growth and development in selected Pentecostal churches in Edo State.
