INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education in the 21st century is increasingly characterized by the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process. The use of multimedia instructional materials—such as videos, animations, audio narrations, and interactive simulations—has transformed traditional classrooms into dynamic learning environments that foster better understanding and retention among students (Mayer, 2021). Multimedia learning, according to the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, enhances comprehension by combining verbal and visual channels, allowing learners to process information more effectively (Mayer, 2009).
In Nigeria, secondary education serves as the critical bridge between primary and tertiary levels, preparing learners for higher education and professional development. However, poor academic achievement, particularly in key subjects like Mathematics and Science, remains a persistent challenge (Okebukola, 2019). Several studies have attributed students’ poor performance to the continued use of teacher-centered, lecture-based instructional methods that limit students’ engagement and creativity (Ogunlade & Olafare, 2020).
The integration of multimedia materials in teaching has emerged as a potential solution to these learning difficulties. By combining text, sound, images, and animation, multimedia can simplify abstract concepts, stimulate learners’ interest, and promote active participation (Ogunleye & Adeyemo, 2018). For instance, complex topics in Physics or Chemistry can be visualized using animations, while mathematical processes can be illustrated through step-by-step video demonstrations. These tools not only support cognitive development but also cater to different learning styles—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (Ajayi & Akinwale, 2021).
In Lagos State, several secondary schools have begun adopting multimedia-assisted instruction to enhance learning outcomes. However, the extent to which these tools influence students’ academic achievement remains an area requiring empirical investigation. This study, therefore, seeks to examine the impact of multimedia instructional materials on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Lagos State, with particular emphasis on Mathematics and Science subjects.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of multimedia technologies in many Nigerian schools, their integration into classroom teaching remains limited (Adewale, 2020). Many teachers continue to rely heavily on traditional teaching methods that are largely teacher-centered, offering minimal opportunities for students’ engagement and interaction. As a result, learners often struggle with understanding complex scientific and mathematical concepts, leading to low achievement levels (Olatunde, 2019).
Empirical reports from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have consistently shown poor student performance in Mathematics and Science subjects across Nigeria (WAEC, 2023). This trend has raised concerns about the effectiveness of current teaching methods and the need for pedagogical innovation. While multimedia instructional materials have been shown in global studies to enhance learning outcomes (Moreno & Mayer, 2019), there is insufficient local evidence on their impact within Nigerian secondary school contexts, particularly in Lagos State.
This study thus seeks to address the gap by investigating how the use of multimedia instructional materials—videos, animations, and interactive simulations—affects students’ understanding, retention, and overall academic achievement in secondary schools.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to investigate the impact of multimedia instructional materials on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Lagos State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following hypothesis will be tested in the study:
H₀₁: There is no significant impact of multimedia instructional materials on students’ academic achievement in Mathematics and Science subjects in selected secondary schools in Lagos State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. First, it provides empirical evidence on how multimedia instructional materials influence academic performance, offering insights for teachers, curriculum planners, and educational policymakers. Teachers can use the findings to adopt more interactive, technology-driven instructional strategies that enhance comprehension and student engagement.
Secondly, curriculum developers and policymakers in Nigeria’s education sector can leverage the study’s outcomes to design and implement policies that promote multimedia integration into classroom teaching, especially in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.
Furthermore, the study will contribute to the growing body of literature on educational technology in developing countries, providing a Nigerian perspective on multimedia learning’s impact. Finally, students will benefit directly as multimedia-enhanced instruction can make learning more enjoyable, improve understanding, and increase retention.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of multimedia instructional materials on students’ academic achievement in secondary schools in Lagos State. It specifically examines how videos, animations, and interactive simulations influence students’ understanding and retention in Mathematics and Science subjects. The study will cover selected public and private secondary schools in Lagos State and involve both teachers and students as participants.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
