Project – The Impact of Physical Activity on the Mental Health of Secondary School Students in Omaha LGA
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Physical activity is widely recognized as a fundamental component of healthy living. Globally, numerous studies have highlighted the significant impact of regular physical activity on both physical and mental well-being. Mental health among adolescents has become a growing concern, as this age group is particularly vulnerable to stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional disorders (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Secondary school students face multiple academic, social, and environmental pressures that can negatively influence their mental health.
In recent years, there has been increasing interest in understanding how physical activity contributes to mental health in young people. Physical activity, including exercises such as running, sports, and recreational activities, is associated with the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters that reduce stress and improve mood (Biddle & Asare, 2011). In addition, participating in physical activities provides opportunities for social interaction, self-confidence development, and coping skill enhancement, all of which positively affect adolescents’ mental health (Lubans et al., 2016).
In the context of Nigeria, many secondary school students in local government areas (LGAs) such as Omaha often lack structured opportunities for physical activity due to overcrowded curricula, limited recreational facilities, and socio-cultural barriers. Consequently, there is a growing concern about the mental health of students in these schools. Studies conducted in other regions suggest that integrating regular physical activity into students’ routines can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve self-esteem, and enhance cognitive functioning (Singh et al., 2012). However, empirical data focusing on Omaha LGA remains limited. Understanding the relationship between physical activity and mental health in this specific context is therefore critical for designing effective interventions and policies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Mental health challenges among secondary school students have increasingly become a major concern for educators, parents, and policymakers. Adolescents often experience stress from academic pressure, peer influence, family expectations, and social changes, which can manifest as anxiety, depression, and emotional instability. In Omaha LGA, reports from school guidance counselors and local education authorities indicate rising cases of stress-related disorders and behavioral issues among secondary school students (Omaha LGA Education Office, 2023).
Despite these growing concerns, many schools in Omaha LGA do not prioritize physical activity as part of the educational curriculum, focusing mainly on academic achievements. This neglect potentially exacerbates students’ mental health challenges. Existing studies on the relationship between physical activity and mental health in Nigeria are largely concentrated in urban centers or southern regions, leaving a significant knowledge gap in LGAs like Omaha. Without empirical evidence specific to this population, it is difficult to implement effective interventions that could improve students’ mental health through physical activity programs. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the extent to which physical activity impacts the mental health of secondary school students in Omaha LGA to provide evidence-based recommendations for schools, policymakers, and stakeholders.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to examine the impact of physical activity on the mental health of secondary school students in Omaha LGA. The specific objectives are:
-
To assess the level of physical activity among secondary school students in Omaha LGA.
-
To determine the mental health status of secondary school students in Omaha LGA.
-
To examine the relationship between physical activity and mental health among secondary school students in Omaha LGA.
-
To recommend strategies for promoting physical activity to enhance mental health among secondary school students.
1.4 Research Question
-
What is the level of physical activity among secondary school students in Omaha LGA?
-
What is the mental health status of secondary school students in Omaha LGA?
-
Is there a significant relationship between physical activity and mental health among secondary school students in Omaha LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Physical activity has no significant impact on the mental health of secondary school students in Omaha LGA.
H₁: Physical activity has a significant impact on the mental health of secondary school students in Omaha LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will provide valuable insights for educational policymakers, school administrators, and physical education teachers on the importance of integrating physical activity into secondary school curricula. It will help identify effective strategies for promoting mental well-being among adolescents, potentially reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, the study will contribute to existing literature on adolescent mental health and physical activity in Nigeria, particularly in under-researched LGAs such as Omaha, offering a foundation for further research and intervention programs.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on secondary school students in Omaha LGA, examining the relationship between their engagement in physical activities and their mental health status. The study will consider both male and female students across different schools in the LGA. The investigation will cover various forms of physical activity, including structured exercises, sports participation, and recreational activities, and assess mental health parameters such as stress, anxiety, and self-esteem.
