Project – The Impact of Physical Exercise on the Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Lagos State, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Physical exercise plays a vital role in promoting not only physical health but also cognitive functioning and academic achievement among students. Globally, educationists and health professionals have emphasized the importance of incorporating regular physical activity into students’ daily routines to enhance mental alertness, concentration, and learning outcomes (Hillman et al., 2019). In the school environment, physical exercise encompasses structured activities such as sports, aerobics, physical education lessons, and unstructured play that improve cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, and mental wellbeing (Bailey, 2017).
In Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State, secondary school students are increasingly facing sedentary lifestyles due to academic pressure, the rise of digital technology, and limited sports infrastructure. This sedentary trend has been associated with lower physical fitness levels and reduced academic engagement (Ogunleye & Akinola, 2020). However, several studies have shown that students who regularly participate in physical exercise tend to have better concentration, memory retention, and stress management, which are key determinants of academic performance (Singh et al., 2019).
Furthermore, physical exercise stimulates brain function through increased oxygen flow and the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and endorphins, which improve mood and cognitive capacity (Ratey, 2008). Therefore, examining the relationship between physical exercise and academic performance is essential for understanding how physical wellbeing can support educational objectives, especially in a highly competitive learning environment like Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of physical exercise, many secondary schools in Lagos State have reduced the time allotted to physical education due to academic demands and infrastructural challenges. Students often focus solely on intellectual pursuits without balancing them with physical activity. This has led to issues such as poor concentration, low academic motivation, and mental fatigue among students (Adeoye, 2018). Additionally, obesity and other health-related issues among adolescents have been linked to physical inactivity.
There is a growing concern that the neglect of physical exercise could have detrimental effects on the academic performance and overall development of students. While several studies have been conducted in developed countries on the link between exercise and academic achievement, limited empirical evidence exists within the Nigerian context, particularly in Lagos State. Hence, this study investigates the impact of physical exercise on the academic performance of secondary school students in Lagos State, Nigeria.
