INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely recognized as a key driver of national development, and at the heart of effective education lies a robust learning process that engages learners through both theoretical and practical experiences. School projects, as part of experiential learning, play a crucial role in helping pupils apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations (Adebayo, 2020). In primary education, these projects often take the form of hands-on assignments, group work, creative displays, and practical demonstrations that enhance pupils’ understanding of core subjects.

In Nigeria, particularly at the primary school level, school projects are designed to stimulate critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills among pupils (Obi & Adejumo, 2019). The Universal Basic Education (UBE) curriculum emphasizes project-based learning as a strategy for improving comprehension, retention, and skill development. According to Okafor (2021), involving pupils in projects such as science experiments, art exhibitions, and local environmental studies provides them with opportunities to connect abstract concepts to practical experiences, thereby enhancing academic performance.

In areas like Lekki, Lagos State, where many private and public primary schools strive to meet global educational standards, school projects have become integral to teaching and learning. Teachers use projects to assess pupils’ understanding, teamwork, and creativity (Ogunleye, 2022). However, disparities in the quality, supervision, and resources available for project execution often influence how effective such projects are in improving academic performance. Some schools provide ample materials and teacher guidance, while others struggle with inadequate funding, overcrowded classrooms, and limited instructional support (Eze & Iwu, 2021).

Therefore, assessing the impact of school projects on pupils’ academic performance is important for understanding how project-based learning contributes to educational outcomes. It will also help identify challenges that hinder effective implementation and propose strategies for improvement within the context of primary education in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized benefits of school projects, many primary schools in Nigeria still face challenges in implementing them effectively. In some cases, school projects are treated as mere formalities rather than meaningful learning experiences. Teachers may assign projects without providing sufficient guidance, and pupils often depend on parents or external help to complete them, undermining the learning objective (Aina, 2020).

In Lekki, Lagos, where several schools pride themselves on modern educational practices, disparities exist between schools that have sufficient learning resources and those that lack them. This disparity may affect pupils’ engagement, creativity, and overall academic achievement (Adeyemi & Ojo, 2021). Moreover, there is limited empirical evidence on how school projects directly influence academic performance at the primary level, especially in private and public schools in urban settings. This study, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by examining the impact of school projects on pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Lekki, Lagos.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of school projects on pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Lekki, Lagos.
The specific objectives are to:

1. Determine the extent to which school projects enhance pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools.

2. Assess the relationship between the quality of school projects and pupils’ understanding of academic subjects.

3. Identify the challenges teachers and pupils face in implementing school projects.

4. Suggest measures for improving the effectiveness of school projects in enhancing learning outcomes.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. To what extent do school projects enhance pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Lekki?

2. What is the relationship between the quality of school projects and pupils’ understanding of academic subjects?

3. What challenges are encountered by teachers and pupils in the implementation of school projects?

4. What strategies can be adopted to improve the effectiveness of school projects in enhancing pupils’ academic performance?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: School projects have no significant impact on pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Lekki, Lagos.
H₁: School projects have a significant impact on pupils’ academic performance in primary schools in Lekki, Lagos.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to several stakeholders in the educational sector. For teachers, it will provide insights into how effectively designed and supervised school projects can improve pupils’ learning outcomes. School administrators will benefit from understanding the need to allocate adequate resources and training for project-based learning. Policymakers, particularly within the Lagos State Ministry of Education, can use the results to review curriculum policies that promote active learning. Finally, the study will contribute to existing literature on project-based learning and serve as a reference point for future researchers in the field of primary education.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on selected primary schools in Lekki, Lagos State. It will assess how school projects influence pupils’ academic performance in core subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Basic Science. The study will include both private and public primary schools to provide a comprehensive view of the subject matter.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• School Projects: Learning activities assigned to pupils to demonstrate understanding of classroom lessons through practical work or presentations.

• Academic Performance: The measurable outcome of a pupil’s learning achievement, often represented by test scores, grades, or teacher assessments.

• Primary Schools: Educational institutions providing foundational education for children, typically between the ages of 5 and 12 years.

• Project-Based Learning: A teaching method that engages pupils in exploring real-world problems and challenges through hands-on projects.
