CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Water is a fundamental resource for human survival, yet its quality determines whether it sustains life or threatens it. Access to clean and safe drinking water is recognized as a basic human right and a cornerstone of public health (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). However, in many rural communities of developing countries, including Nigeria, poor water quality continues to pose a serious health risk. The contamination of water sources by microorganisms, agricultural runoff, and industrial wastes contributes to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, and diarrhea (Olayemi, 2019).
In Nigeria, rural communities depend largely on surface and groundwater sources—such as rivers, streams, hand-dug wells, and boreholes—that are often unprotected from contamination (Adejumo & Onifade, 2020). These sources are vulnerable to pollution from open defecation, waste dumping, and agricultural chemicals. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS, 2022), over 40% of rural Nigerians lack access to safe drinking water, and this has been linked to the high prevalence of waterborne diseases across rural regions.
The problem is more pronounced in communities such as Ogene Zaria in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, where the population relies on untreated water sources for domestic use. Seasonal flooding and poor sanitation practices increase the likelihood of bacterial and chemical contamination of water sources (Ojo & Yahaya, 2021). Consequently, outbreaks of typhoid, cholera, and diarrhea are common, especially during the rainy season when surface runoff carries pathogens into drinking water sources.

1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of water quality on the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Ogene Zaria, Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between water quality and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Ogene Zaria, Ofu Local Government Area.
1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope of the Study
This research focuses on the impact of water quality on the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Ogene Zaria community, located in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. The study will analyze different sources of drinking water such as wells, boreholes, and streams, and evaluate their quality through physical (color, odor, turbidity), chemical (pH, nitrates, heavy metals), and microbiological (coliform count) indicators. The health aspect of the study will focus on common waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhea, and dysentery. The data will cover information gathered between 2015 and 2024 to reflect current conditions.
