INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Preaching has remained one of the central functions of the Christian Church from the apostolic era to contemporary Christianity. It serves as the primary means through which the Word of God is communicated, interpreted, and applied to the lives of believers. The New Testament identifies preaching as a divine responsibility entrusted to the Church for evangelism, discipleship, spiritual instruction, and transformation (Romans 10:14–17; 2 Timothy 4:2). Through preaching, believers are expected to encounter God’s truth, develop spiritual understanding, and grow into mature followers of Christ. Stott (2017) explains that authentic Christian preaching stands between the biblical text and the contemporary world, seeking to communicate God’s message faithfully while addressing the realities and needs of human beings.

Biblical preaching differs from ordinary public speaking because its foundation is the authority of Scripture and its purpose is spiritual transformation rather than merely intellectual communication. Chapell (2018) notes that faithful preaching involves the careful interpretation of biblical texts and the presentation of their theological meaning in a way that points believers toward Christ and encourages practical obedience. Similarly, Robinson (2014) argues that effective biblical preaching requires the communication of a central biblical idea derived from Scripture and presented clearly to influence the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours of listeners. Therefore, preaching becomes a vital instrument for shaping Christian identity, morality, and spiritual commitment.

The importance of preaching in Christian spiritual formation is closely connected with the concept of discipleship. Spiritual development refers to the continuous process through which believers grow in their relationship with God, acquire Christian virtues, develop biblical understanding, and demonstrate Christ-like character. According to Willard (2021), spiritual formation involves the transformation of the human person into the likeness of Christ through intentional engagement with spiritual disciplines such as Scripture reading, prayer, worship, and obedience. Preaching contributes to this process by providing theological instruction, spiritual encouragement, correction, and guidance for Christian living.

The Scriptures present the teaching and proclamation of God’s Word as essential for the growth of believers. In Acts 2:42, the early Christian community devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers, demonstrating the relationship between biblical instruction and spiritual maturity. Fee and Stuart (2014) maintain that proper understanding and application of Scripture enables believers to develop a meaningful relationship with God and make responsible decisions based on biblical principles. Consequently, preaching remains a significant means through which the Church nurtures faith and promotes spiritual development.

Within the Anglican tradition, preaching occupies a central position in worship, pastoral ministry, and Christian education. Anglican theology emphasizes the importance of Scripture, tradition, reason, sacraments, and liturgical worship as foundations for Christian life. The Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion and Anglican liturgical traditions demonstrate the denomination’s commitment to the authority of Scripture as the basis of Christian doctrine and practice. McGrath (2013) observes that Anglican identity is shaped by its commitment to biblical faith expressed through worship, theological reflection, and pastoral engagement. Consequently, Anglican preaching is expected to combine biblical interpretation with practical application for the spiritual nourishment of congregations.

The Anglican Church in Nigeria has historically contributed significantly to evangelism, education, social transformation, and spiritual development. Since the establishment of Anglican missions in Nigeria during the nineteenth century, the Church has expanded through diocesan structures, parish development, theological education, and missionary activities. Asadu (2023) explains that the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has experienced significant growth while facing contemporary challenges relating to leadership, mission expansion, and maintaining theological identity within a rapidly changing religious environment. These realities have increased the importance of effective preaching as a tool for sustaining spiritual commitment among members.

The Diocese of Abuja represents one of the important dioceses within the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). Located within Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, the Diocese serves a diverse population consisting of professionals, civil servants, students, families, and individuals from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Such diversity requires preaching that addresses contemporary spiritual, social, and moral challenges while remaining faithful to biblical truth. Effective preaching within Anglican parishes in Abuja is therefore expected to strengthen members’ faith, encourage Christian discipline, and promote active participation in the mission of the Church.

However, the effectiveness of preaching in promoting spiritual development depends on several factors, including biblical accuracy, theological depth, communication skills, contextual relevance, and the ability to address congregational needs. Keller (2015) argues that preaching must connect the timeless message of Scripture with the cultural and personal realities of listeners if it is to produce meaningful transformation. Similarly, Long (2016) emphasizes that preaching is not simply the transmission of religious information but an act of pastoral communication intended to shape the faith and practices of Christian communities.

In the Nigerian Christian context, preaching has experienced significant changes due to the growth of Pentecostal movements, digital media ministries, and diverse approaches to communicating religious messages. While these developments have increased access to Christian teachings, they have also generated concerns regarding biblical interpretation, theological balance, and emphasis on spiritual maturity. Some contemporary preaching approaches have been criticized for focusing excessively on material prosperity while giving insufficient attention to discipleship, holiness, and character formation (Ojo, 2018). This situation highlights the continuing need for biblical preaching that promotes balanced spiritual development.

Congregational spiritual development involves more than church attendance or membership growth. It includes increased knowledge of Scripture, deeper commitment to prayer and worship, moral transformation, participation in ministry activities, evangelistic responsibility, and evidence of Christian character. According to McKnight (2014), authentic Christian growth occurs when believers are formed spiritually through practices that connect faith with everyday life. Preaching contributes to this development by challenging believers to understand their identity in Christ and live according to Christian values.

Despite the recognized importance of preaching, questions remain regarding the extent to which biblical sermons actually influence spiritual development among Anglican congregations. In some churches, members attend worship services regularly but may demonstrate limited biblical knowledge, weak commitment to Christian disciplines, or minimal involvement in ministry activities. This raises concerns about whether preaching practices are achieving their intended purpose of producing spiritually mature believers.

Previous studies on church development in Nigeria have examined issues such as leadership, church growth, missionary activities, and pastoral effectiveness. However, limited empirical attention has been given to the specific relationship between biblical preaching and congregational spiritual development within Anglican parishes, particularly in the Diocese of Abuja. Asadu (2023) notes that contemporary Anglican ministry requires renewed attention to effective mission strategies and pastoral practices capable of strengthening congregational life.

Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of biblical preaching on congregational spiritual development in the Anglican Church, focusing on selected parishes in the Diocese of Abuja. The study aims to determine whether biblical preaching contributes significantly to spiritual growth among Anglican congregants and identify ways through which preaching ministry can be improved for greater spiritual impact.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Anglican Church places significant emphasis on preaching as a major responsibility of clergy and a primary means of communicating God’s Word. Through sermons, priests are expected to teach biblical truths, strengthen believers’ faith, correct moral weaknesses, and encourage Christian commitment. However, despite the central role of preaching in Anglican worship, concerns exist regarding whether preaching is producing the expected level of spiritual transformation among congregants.

One major problem is the apparent gap between regular exposure to sermons and actual spiritual growth among church members. Many congregants participate in weekly worship services where biblical messages are delivered, yet some continue to struggle with inadequate biblical knowledge, weak spiritual discipline, limited commitment to Christian service, and challenges in applying Christian principles to daily life. This situation raises questions regarding the effectiveness of existing preaching approaches.

Another problem relates to the changing religious environment in Nigeria. The increasing influence of social media preaching, online religious content, and alternative Christian movements has transformed how individuals receive spiritual information. While these platforms provide opportunities for wider communication of the gospel, they may also expose believers to conflicting theological perspectives. According to Ojo (2018), contemporary Nigerian Christianity faces the challenge of maintaining theological depth and spiritual balance amid changing expressions of Christian faith.

Furthermore, variations exist in the quality and approach of sermons delivered within Anglican parishes. While some clergy employ biblical exposition and contextual application, others may present messages that lack adequate connection with congregational realities. Robinson (2014) argues that preaching becomes ineffective when the biblical message is not clearly communicated or meaningfully applied to the lives of listeners.

The lack of sufficient empirical studies examining the relationship between biblical preaching and spiritual development among Anglican congregations in Abuja constitutes a research gap. Although preaching remains central to Anglican ministry, limited evidence exists regarding its measurable influence on members’ spiritual maturity, commitment, and participation in church activities.

Consequently, this study addresses the problem by investigating the influence of biblical preaching on congregational spiritual development in selected Anglican parishes in the Diocese of Abuja. The study seeks to provide findings that will assist Anglican leaders and clergy in strengthening preaching practices as an effective instrument for discipleship and spiritual transformation.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to examine the influence of biblical preaching on congregational spiritual development in the Anglican Church, with particular reference to selected parishes in the Diocese of Abuja.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the extent to which biblical preaching influences members’ knowledge and understanding of Scripture in selected Anglican parishes in the Diocese of Abuja.
2. Determine the influence of biblical preaching on congregants’ spiritual maturity and Christian character development.
3. Assess the relationship between preaching effectiveness and members’ participation in church activities and Christian service.
4. Identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of biblical preaching in promoting congregational spiritual development.

1.5 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. To what extent does biblical preaching influence members’ knowledge and understanding of Scripture in selected Anglican parishes in the Diocese of Abuja?
2. How does biblical preaching affect congregants’ spiritual maturity and Christian character development?
3. What relationship exists between preaching effectiveness and members’ participation in church activities and Christian service?
4. What challenges affect the effectiveness of biblical preaching in promoting congregational spiritual development?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Biblical preaching has no significant influence on congregational spiritual development in selected Anglican parishes in the Diocese of Abuja.

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to Anglican Church leaders, particularly bishops, priests, and other ministry workers, by providing insight into the role of preaching in promoting spiritual growth among congregants. The findings may assist clergy in developing more effective preaching strategies that combine biblical accuracy, theological depth, and practical relevance.

The study will also benefit congregational members by emphasizing the importance of active engagement with biblical teaching as a pathway to spiritual maturity. It may encourage believers to become more intentional in applying biblical principles in their personal and communal lives.

Furthermore, theological institutions and researchers will find the study useful as it contributes to discussions on practical theology, homiletics, discipleship, and church development within the Nigerian Anglican context. The study may serve as a reference material for future research on preaching and spiritual formation.

1.8 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the influence of biblical preaching on congregational spiritual development in selected Anglican parishes within the Diocese of Abuja. The study covers issues relating to sermon content, biblical interpretation, preaching effectiveness, spiritual maturity, Christian commitment, and participation in church activities.

The geographical scope is limited to selected Anglican parishes in the Diocese of Abuja, Nigeria. The respondents will include clergy and church members who regularly participate in Anglican worship services.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Biblical Preaching: The communication and explanation of God’s Word through sermons based on accurate interpretation and application of Scripture.

Congregational Spiritual Development: The process through which church members grow in faith, biblical knowledge, Christian character, commitment, and participation in Christian activities.

Anglican Church: A worldwide Christian denomination that follows Anglican traditions of Scripture, liturgy, sacraments, and episcopal governance.

Preaching Effectiveness: The extent to which sermons communicate biblical truth clearly and produce positive spiritual outcomes among listeners.

Spiritual Maturity: The level of growth demonstrated by believers through faith commitment, moral transformation, biblical understanding, and Christ-like living.
