Project – The Influence of Christian Guidance and Counselling on Communication Patterns in Married Couples in Ilorin, Kwara State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Effective communication is a cornerstone of marital satisfaction and stability. In married life, the way couples interact, express emotions, and resolve conflicts directly affects relational harmony, intimacy, and overall family well-being (Gottman, 1994). In Nigeria, socio-cultural factors, economic pressures, and urban lifestyle changes often challenge communication patterns among married couples, sometimes leading to misunderstandings, conflicts, and emotional distancing (Olajide & Afolabi, 2020). In such contexts, Christian guidance and counselling have emerged as a significant intervention for improving communication and enhancing marital stability.
Christian guidance and counselling is a faith-based approach that integrates biblical principles, pastoral care, and psychological insights to support couples in their relational challenges (Adebayo, 2018). It focuses on fostering empathy, conflict resolution skills, active listening, forgiveness, and mutual respect, while also emphasizing spiritual alignment through prayer, scripture, and pastoral mentorship. In many Nigerian cities, including Ilorin, Kwara State, churches provide structured counselling programs, workshops, and marital seminars aimed at enhancing communication among married couples.
Research suggests that Christian counselling can strengthen relational bonds by providing couples with tools to navigate conflicts, express emotions effectively, and resolve misunderstandings in line with Christian values (Mahoney, Pargament, Tarakeshwar, & Swank, 2001). Prayer and pastoral guidance are central components of this approach, as they offer emotional support, spiritual direction, and a framework for self-reflection and mutual accountability. In the Nigerian context, where religion plays a prominent role in personal and social life, such interventions may have a profound influence on couples’ communication patterns and marital satisfaction (Vaaler, Ellison, & Powers, 2009).
Despite the widespread adoption of Christian guidance and counselling among married couples in Ilorin, empirical studies examining its specific impact on communication patterns remain limited. While anecdotal evidence suggests improvements in conflict resolution, emotional expression, and mutual understanding, there is a lack of systematic research quantifying the effectiveness of these interventions in the Nigerian setting. Existing studies often focus broadly on marital satisfaction or religiosity without isolating communication as a distinct outcome (Mahoney et al., 2001; Lambert, Dollahite, & Sandberg, 2012).
This study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating the influence of Christian guidance and counselling on communication patterns among married couples in Ilorin, Kwara State. It will examine both the subjective experiences of couples and measurable changes in communication behavior resulting from counselling interventions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Communication challenges are a common source of marital discord among couples in Ilorin. Misunderstandings, poor listening habits, and ineffective conflict resolution strategies often contribute to dissatisfaction, emotional distance, and, in severe cases, marital breakdown (Olajide & Afolabi, 2020). While many couples turn to religious institutions for support, including Christian counselling and pastoral guidance, the actual impact of these interventions on communication patterns is not well documented.
Questions arise regarding whether couples who participate in Christian counselling experience improved communication, more effective conflict resolution, and greater relational satisfaction. Furthermore, the specific mechanisms through which counselling and prayer influence communication—such as promoting empathy, patience, and forgiveness—remain underexplored. Without empirical evidence, pastors, marriage counselors, and church leaders lack data to optimize counselling programs and provide guidance that effectively addresses communication deficits in marital relationships.
The problem this study addresses, therefore, is the limited understanding of how Christian guidance and counselling influence communication patterns among married couples in Ilorin, Kwara State, and the need for empirical evidence to inform faith-based marital interventions.
