Project – The Influence of Christian Parenting on the Moral Development of Adolescents: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Adolescence is an important stage of human development during which individuals experience significant changes in their physical, psychological, social and moral lives. During this period, young people increasingly develop personal identities, establish greater independence from parents and become more capable of reasoning about values, rules, responsibilities and relationships. Moral development involves the gradual development of principles and behaviours through which individuals distinguish acceptable from unacceptable conduct, develop concern for others and regulate their behaviour according to internalised standards. Family processes are particularly important during this period because parents remain significant sources of guidance, discipline, communication and moral authority even as adolescents become increasingly influenced by peers and other social institutions. White (2000), for example, found that family cohesion, adaptability and positive parent-adolescent communication were related to adolescents’ moral thought and perceptions of sources of moral authority. More recent Nigerian scholarship similarly identifies parents, teachers and the church as important agents in children’s and adolescents’ moral development (Maduelosi & Ezuluofor, 2022).

Christian parenting refers to the process through which Christian parents intentionally guide, nurture, discipline and educate their children according to Christian beliefs and values. It may involve prayer, Bible teaching, modelling Christian conduct, participation in worship, moral instruction, appropriate discipline, communication and the demonstration of values such as honesty, compassion, forgiveness, responsibility and respect for others. The biblical tradition places substantial responsibility on parents for transmitting religious and moral instruction to children, as reflected in passages such as Deuteronomy 6:6–7, Proverbs 22:6 and Ephesians 6:4. Empirical research also suggests that religious beliefs can influence parenting practices and moral socialisation. Mahoney et al. (2009), for instance, found that parents’ beliefs concerning the sacredness of parenting were associated with positive socialisation and inductive discipline, while punitive discipline was associated with less favourable indicators of conscience development. Christian parenting can therefore be understood not merely as taking children to church but as integrating Christian principles into everyday parental relationships, instruction, discipline and behavioural modelling.

The moral development of adolescents is influenced by the interaction of family relationships, parental practices, peers, schools and religious institutions. Parenting practices such as responsiveness, appropriate behavioural expectations, autonomy granting and consistent guidance can provide adolescents with opportunities to understand reasons behind moral rules and gradually internalise values. Padilla-Walker and Carlo (2007) found that parenting processes were associated with adolescents’ prosocial behaviours, while Hardy et al. (2011) emphasised the relevance of religiousness and spirituality to positive youth development. Similarly, Patrick and Gibbs (2012) found that aspects of family socialisation and parental religiousness could be relevant to adolescents’ moral development. These findings suggest that moral development does not occur through instruction alone; rather, it can be shaped by the quality of relationships, parental example, expectations, communication and the broader value system within which adolescents are raised.

Religion can constitute an important socialisation environment for adolescents because religious communities provide beliefs, norms, role models, relationships and opportunities for participation. Within Christian families, parents may reinforce the values taught in church through family worship, prayer, Scripture reading, discussions about right and wrong, church attendance and personal example. Nigerian research provides evidence that religious participation can be associated with prosocial behaviour among adolescents. Eze et al. (2019), studying Nigerian adolescents, reported that religious attendance moderated environmental influences on prosocial behaviour, with adolescents from highly religious families being more frequently exposed to religious teachings that encouraged prosocial practices. Similarly, Guo (2018) found that parental religious involvement was related to adolescent delinquency indirectly through adolescent religious involvement, parenting practices, inter-parental conflict and self-control. These findings do not establish that religious involvement automatically produces moral behaviour, but they demonstrate why the relationship between parental religious involvement, parenting practices and adolescent moral outcomes deserves empirical examination.

The Christian church can complement the moral instruction provided within the family by creating an environment in which adolescents encounter Christian teaching, peer relationships, youth leaders and opportunities for service. In Nigeria, Maduelosi and Ezuluofor (2022) argue that parents, teachers and the church have important roles in children’s moral development and that moral education requires cooperation among these socialisation agents. Okpaleke (2019) similarly highlights the importance of religious formation and catechesis in the Nigerian context, while noting that the responsibility of forming children in faith requires effective approaches to religious education. Within Pentecostal churches, this responsibility may take different forms, including children’s ministries, youth fellowships, Bible study, mentoring, worship, prayer and family-oriented programmes. Consequently, examining Christian parenting within Pentecostal communities provides an opportunity to consider how the values communicated at home interact with the religious environment experienced by adolescents.

The Nigerian social environment makes the question of adolescent moral development particularly significant because young people encounter multiple and sometimes competing sources of values. Family expectations may coexist with influences from schools, peers, social media, entertainment, popular culture and religious communities. Omede (2018), in research involving in-school Christian adolescents in Nigeria, examined physical, emotional, social, moral and cognitive developmental challenges and their relationship with behavioural dispositions. More recent Nigerian research involving adolescents found that religious coping was associated with prosocial moral reasoning, which in turn was associated with fewer delinquent behaviours (see Religious coping and delinquent behaviors, 2024). These findings suggest that religious and family experiences may form part of a wider network of influences on adolescent behaviour and moral reasoning. They also indicate the importance of investigating Christian parenting within the specific social environment in which adolescents live rather than assuming that church attendance or religious identity alone determines moral conduct.

The Pentecostal church provides an important setting for this study because Pentecostal Christianity places considerable emphasis on personal faith, biblical teaching, prayer, spiritual discipline and Christian conduct. However, the presence of Christian teaching does not necessarily mean that all adolescents will internalise or consistently practise the values they encounter. A recent Nigerian study by Oke (2024) specifically examined child-upbringing parental styles and the personal values of adolescents attending selected Pentecostal churches in Ede South Local Government Area, Osun State. The study reported a significant relationship between parental styles and adolescents’ personal values and also identified a role for the Pentecostal religious environment in shaping values. At the same time, the study noted that religious environments may have both positive and negative dimensions, including the possibility of rigidity or pressure to conform. This provides a useful basis for investigating Christian parenting among adolescents attending Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State, while recognising that moral development is influenced by multiple factors and cannot be attributed exclusively to parenting or church participation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Moral development during adolescence is an important concern because adolescents are increasingly required to make independent decisions about behaviour, relationships, responsibilities and personal values. Parents remain significant agents in this process, but adolescents are also exposed to influences from peers, schools, religious institutions, social media and the wider society. Nigerian scholarship has identified parents, teachers and churches as important agents of moral development, while research on Nigerian adolescents has linked religious coping and prosocial moral reasoning with differences in delinquent behaviour. The problem, therefore, is not simply whether adolescents attend Christian churches but whether the moral principles promoted by Christian parenting are sufficiently integrated into adolescents’ everyday decision-making and conduct (Maduelosi & Ezuluofor, 2022; Religious coping and delinquent behaviors, 2024).

A related concern is the possibility of a gap between Christian instruction and actual parenting practices within the home. Christian parents may teach honesty, obedience, self-control, compassion, respect and responsibility, yet the methods used to communicate and enforce these values may differ considerably. Research on parental socialisation indicates that parenting practices such as responsiveness, communication, demandingness and autonomy granting are related to adolescents’ moral identity and social responsibility. Padilla-Walker and Carlo (2007) likewise showed that parental processes are relevant to adolescent prosocial development. Thus, simply identifying a family as Christian does not provide sufficient evidence about the quality or nature of its parenting practices. There is a need to examine how Christian parents actually communicate moral values, provide discipline, model behaviour and interact with their adolescents.

Another problem concerns the changing social environment in which adolescents develop their moral values. Young people can receive conflicting messages from family, church, school, peers, entertainment and digital media. Nigerian research on religious involvement suggests that religious environments may encourage prosocial behaviour, but religious participation operates alongside other socialisation experiences. Eze et al. (2019) found evidence that religious attendance moderated environmental influences on prosocial behaviour among Nigerian adolescents, while Guo (2018) found that parental religious involvement operated through several family and adolescent processes rather than directly determining delinquency. Consequently, it remains important to investigate whether Christian parenting has a discernible relationship with moral development among adolescents who participate in Pentecostal churches rather than assuming that religious affiliation alone guarantees moral consistency.

Despite existing studies on parenting, religion and adolescent development, there is limited context-specific evidence concerning the influence of Christian parenting on the moral development of adolescents attending selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State. A Nigerian study in Ede South examined parental styles and personal values among adolescents in selected Pentecostal churches, demonstrating the relevance of this subject within Pentecostal settings, but its geographical context differs from Ikorodu. Furthermore, Maduelosi and Ezuluofor (2022) examined the broader roles of parents, teachers and churches in Nigerian moral development rather than specifically investigating Christian parenting among adolescents in Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu. The absence of sufficient local evidence creates a need for empirical investigation into the Christian parenting practices experienced by adolescents, the dimensions of moral development associated with those practices, and the measures that may strengthen positive moral formation. It is against this background that this study investigates the influence of Christian parenting on the moral development of adolescents in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Christian parenting on the moral development of adolescents in selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. Identify the major Christian parenting practices used by parents of adolescents attending selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
  2. Examine the level of moral development among adolescents attending the selected Pentecostal churches.
  3. Determine the influence of Christian parenting practices on the moral development of adolescents attending the selected Pentecostal churches.
  4. Identify the challenges affecting effective Christian parenting and suggest measures for strengthening the moral development of adolescents in the selected Pentecostal churches.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What are the major Christian parenting practices used by parents of adolescents attending selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State?
  2. What is the level of moral development among adolescents attending the selected Pentecostal churches?
  3. To what extent do Christian parenting practices influence the moral development of adolescents attending the selected Pentecostal churches?
  4. What challenges affect effective Christian parenting, and what measures can strengthen the moral development of adolescents in the selected Pentecostal churches?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no statistically significant relationship between Christian parenting practices and the moral development of adolescents attending selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study may be significant to Christian parents because it may provide information about parenting practices that can support adolescents’ moral formation. The findings may encourage parents to integrate Christian teaching with appropriate communication, positive discipline, personal example, emotional support and consistent guidance.

The study may be beneficial to adolescents by drawing attention to the importance of moral reasoning, responsibility, honesty, self-control, respect and concern for others. The findings may also help adolescents understand the role of family and church environments in the development of their personal values and behaviour.

The study may be useful to Pentecostal church leaders and youth ministers because it may provide evidence about the relationship between family practices and adolescents’ moral development. Such information may assist churches in designing parenting seminars, youth programmes, family counselling, mentoring initiatives and Bible-based programmes that complement rather than replace parental responsibilities.

The study may also benefit pastoral counsellors and Christian educators. The findings may help them identify areas in which parents experience difficulties in transmitting Christian values and may provide a basis for counselling strategies that encourage constructive parent-adolescent communication, appropriate discipline and positive role modelling.

The study may be relevant to teachers, guidance counsellors and schools because adolescents’ moral behaviour is influenced by several social environments. Understanding the contribution of Christian parenting may help educators cooperate more effectively with parents and religious communities while respecting the different responsibilities of each institution.

Finally, the study may contribute to academic literature and future research in Christian education, theology, religious studies, sociology, psychology, social work and guidance and counselling. It may provide context-specific information about Christian parenting and adolescent moral development within Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State, and may serve as a reference for subsequent research.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the influence of Christian parenting on the moral development of adolescents attending selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The content scope covers Christian parenting practices such as moral instruction, Bible teaching, prayer, parental modelling, communication, discipline, supervision and participation in Christian activities. The study also examines aspects of adolescent moral development, including honesty, responsibility, self-control, respect, empathy, obedience to appropriate moral standards and prosocial behaviour.

The geographical scope is restricted to selected Pentecostal churches in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria.

The population scope will consist of adolescents attending the selected Pentecostal churches and, where appropriate to the final research design, their parents or other relevant respondents. The specific churches, population, sample size and sampling procedure will be established in Chapter Three.
