Project – The Influence of Christian Religious Education on Faith Development Among Catholic Students in Lagos-Island
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education plays a significant role in shaping the intellectual, moral, social, and spiritual life of individuals in society. In Christian communities, education is not limited to academic achievement alone but also includes the development of godly character, moral discipline, and spiritual maturity among learners. Christian Religious Education (CRE) has therefore become an essential aspect of faith formation, particularly within Catholic schools where religious instruction is integrated into the educational system. Catholic education emphasizes the holistic development of students through the combination of academic excellence, moral instruction, and spiritual guidance rooted in biblical and Catholic doctrines.
Christian Religious Education refers to the systematic teaching of Christian beliefs, values, doctrines, ethics, and practices with the aim of nurturing spiritual growth and moral uprightness among learners. It exposes students to biblical teachings, Christian principles, church traditions, and ethical standards that guide their relationship with God and society. According to Groome (2011), Christian Religious Education seeks to transform learners spiritually by helping them develop a personal relationship with God while equipping them with moral values necessary for responsible living. In Catholic schools, CRE is considered a major instrument for evangelization and faith transmission among young people.
The Catholic Church has historically played a vital role in the development of education in Nigeria. Catholic missionaries established schools not only for literacy and vocational training but also for the propagation of Christian faith and moral values. Catholic schools were designed to produce intellectually sound and spiritually disciplined individuals who would contribute positively to society. In contemporary Nigeria, Catholic schools continue to maintain their reputation for discipline, moral instruction, and academic excellence. However, increasing secularization, technological advancement, peer pressure, and moral decadence among youths have raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of Christian Religious Education in strengthening the faith of students.
Faith development refers to the process through which individuals grow in their understanding of God, commitment to religious beliefs, participation in spiritual activities, and application of religious values in daily life. Fowler (1981) explains faith development as a lifelong process involving trust, belief systems, values, and spiritual identity formation. Among Catholic students, faith development may be reflected in regular participation in Mass, prayer life, adherence to Christian moral teachings, involvement in church activities, and commitment to Christian values such as love, honesty, humility, and forgiveness. Christian Religious Education is expected to influence these aspects positively by providing students with biblical knowledge and spiritual guidance.
In recent years, there has been growing concern about the declining level of religious commitment among youths, including students in Catholic schools. Many students attend religious classes and church programs but still engage in immoral behaviors such as examination malpractice, cultism, dishonesty, substance abuse, disrespect for authority, and other social vices. This situation has raised questions regarding the extent to which Christian Religious Education contributes to genuine faith development among Catholic students. Although Catholic schools provide structured religious activities such as catechism classes, morning devotions, Mass celebrations, retreats, and moral instruction, some students appear to lack deep spiritual commitment and practical application of Christian teachings.
In Lagos-Island, which serves as one of the major urban centers in Lagos State, Catholic schools operate within a highly dynamic social environment characterized by modernization, cultural diversity, media influence, and economic challenges. Students are exposed to various societal influences that may either strengthen or weaken their faith. The urban nature of Lagos-Island has contributed to changing value systems among youths, thereby making faith formation more challenging for both schools and parents. Consequently, there is a growing need to examine whether Christian Religious Education in Catholic schools effectively promotes faith development among students within this environment.
Furthermore, the role of teachers in Christian Religious Education cannot be overlooked. Teachers serve as spiritual mentors and role models whose attitudes, teaching methods, and commitment greatly influence students’ understanding and practice of Christian values. Effective teaching strategies, including interactive learning, practical demonstrations, counseling, and participation in religious activities, are necessary for meaningful faith formation. However, inadequate instructional materials, poor student interest, insufficient teacher motivation, and limited parental involvement may hinder the effectiveness of Christian Religious Education in achieving its objectives.
Scholars have emphasized the importance of religious education in moral and spiritual development. Ikechukwu (2019) observed that Christian Religious Education contributes significantly to character formation and moral discipline among secondary school students. Similarly, Adeyemo (2020) noted that students exposed to effective religious instruction are more likely to demonstrate positive moral behavior and stronger spiritual commitment. Despite these findings, there remains limited empirical research focusing specifically on Catholic students in Lagos-Island and how Christian Religious Education influences their faith development.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the influence of Christian Religious Education on faith development among Catholic students in Lagos-Island. The study intends to determine whether exposure to Christian Religious Education enhances students’ spiritual growth, moral behavior, religious commitment, and participation in church activities. The findings of the study are expected to contribute to educational development, religious studies, and faith formation strategies among Catholic schools in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Christian Religious Education is expected to play a major role in nurturing the spiritual life, moral values, and faith commitment of students in Catholic schools. Through religious instruction, prayers, catechism, biblical teachings, and church activities, students are expected to develop a deeper understanding of Christian doctrines and demonstrate positive moral behavior in society. Catholic schools in Lagos-Island devote considerable attention to religious education as part of their mission of producing spiritually grounded and morally upright individuals.
Despite these efforts, there appears to be an increasing decline in faith commitment and moral discipline among many students. Cases of examination malpractice, dishonesty, disobedience, disrespect for authority, immoral dressing, internet fraud, peer influence, substance abuse, and poor participation in religious activities have become common among some youths, including students attending Catholic schools. Many students participate in Christian Religious Education classes merely for academic purposes without demonstrating practical application of Christian values in their daily lives. This situation raises concerns regarding the effectiveness of Christian Religious Education in promoting genuine faith development among Catholic students.
Additionally, the modern social environment of Lagos-Island exposes students to various secular influences through social media, entertainment, peer groups, and changing societal values. These influences may weaken students’ commitment to Christian teachings despite regular exposure to religious instruction in school. Parents and religious leaders have also expressed concerns about the declining interest of youths in spiritual matters and church activities.
Another problem is that some Christian Religious Education teachers may focus more on theoretical teaching than practical spiritual formation. Inadequate teaching methods, lack of instructional resources, insufficient motivation of teachers, and limited parental support may reduce the effectiveness of Christian Religious Education programs in Catholic schools. Consequently, students may acquire biblical knowledge without experiencing true spiritual transformation or personal faith growth.
Although several studies have examined religious education and moral development in Nigeria, few studies have specifically investigated the influence of Christian Religious Education on faith development among Catholic students in Lagos-Island. This creates a gap in knowledge that this study seeks to fill. Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether Christian Religious Education significantly influences faith development among Catholic students in Lagos-Island.
