INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Peacebuilding and conflict resolution have become critical issues in Nigeria due to recurring ethno-religious conflicts, communal clashes, and political violence. Plateau State, particularly Jos, has experienced a history of religious and ethnic tensions that have disrupted social cohesion, hindered economic development, and caused significant loss of life and property (United States Institute of Peace, 2020). In this context, faith-based institutions, particularly Christian churches, have played a crucial role in promoting peace, reconciliation, and social harmony.

Christian teachings emphasize moral principles such as forgiveness, love, justice, reconciliation, and respect for human dignity. Biblical doctrines, including the teachings of Jesus on peacemaking (Matthew 5:9) and the apostle Paul’s call for reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18–19), provide frameworks that encourage individuals and communities to resolve conflicts amicably and restore broken relationships (Okeke & Nnadi, 2021). Churches, as centers of spiritual guidance and moral education, can influence the attitudes and behaviors of congregants toward non-violent conflict resolution.

In Jos, Christian churches have historically been involved in peacebuilding initiatives, including interfaith dialogues, community mediation, conflict resolution workshops, and youth sensitization programs. By promoting Christian values such as tolerance, patience, and forgiveness, churches aim to reduce hostilities, mitigate violence, and foster communal harmony. The role of religious leaders in influencing moral and ethical behavior is particularly significant in regions where formal governmental conflict resolution mechanisms may be weak or mistrusted by local communities.

Globally, faith-based peacebuilding has been recognized as an effective complement to formal conflict resolution strategies. The United Nations Development Programme emphasizes that religious organizations can provide legitimacy, moral authority, and community trust, which are essential in preventing and resolving conflicts. In Nigeria, Christian churches have contributed to grassroots peace initiatives by facilitating dialogue between conflicting parties, providing platforms for reconciliation, and promoting social justice.

Despite the acknowledged role of churches in peacebuilding, there is limited empirical research examining the direct influence of Christian teachings on conflict resolution practices among congregants in conflict-prone areas like Jos. Understanding this influence is essential for designing interventions that leverage religious principles to strengthen social cohesion, reduce violence, and enhance community resilience.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Plateau State has faced recurring conflicts between different ethnic and religious groups, leading to loss of lives, displacement, property destruction, and socio-economic instability. Jos, as the state capital and a religiously diverse city, has often been at the center of these tensions. Efforts to resolve conflicts have traditionally relied on government mediation, law enforcement, and security interventions. However, these efforts alone have not always yielded sustainable peace, partly due to mistrust, delayed interventions, and limited community participation.

Christian churches in Jos have stepped in to complement formal conflict resolution efforts by promoting reconciliation and moral guidance based on Christian teachings. While anecdotal evidence suggests that these teachings influence peacebuilding efforts, there is limited empirical data on the extent to which congregants internalize and apply these principles in real-life conflict situations. Questions remain regarding the effectiveness of church-led initiatives, the challenges faced in promoting peace, and the measurable impact of Christian teachings on reducing hostilities and promoting social cohesion.

Moreover, challenges such as limited resources, lack of structured peace programs, varying interpretations of Christian teachings, and resistance from conflicting parties may affect the effectiveness of church-led peacebuilding initiatives. Without systematic evaluation, policymakers, religious leaders, and development agencies may lack evidence-based insights into leveraging Christian teachings to foster sustainable peace.

Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the influence of Christian teachings on peacebuilding and conflict resolution among churches in Jos, Plateau State, to provide empirical evidence for effective intervention strategies.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of Christian teachings on peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Jos, Plateau State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the Christian teachings and doctrines that promote peace and conflict resolution.

2. Assess the extent to which church members apply Christian teachings in resolving conflicts.

3. Evaluate the impact of church-led peacebuilding initiatives on community conflict levels.

4. Identify challenges faced by churches in promoting peace and conflict resolution.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What Christian teachings are emphasized by churches to promote peace and conflict resolution?

2. To what extent do church members apply Christian teachings in resolving conflicts?

3. How do church-led peacebuilding initiatives impact community conflict levels?

4. What challenges do churches face in promoting peace and conflict resolution in Jos?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: Christian teachings have no significant influence on peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Jos, Plateau State.

H₁: Christian teachings have a significant influence on peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Jos, Plateau State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will provide church leaders with evidence on the effectiveness of Christian teachings in promoting peace and resolving conflicts. It will guide policymakers and development organizations in integrating faith-based strategies into conflict prevention and resolution frameworks.

Academically, the study will contribute to literature on religion, peace studies, and conflict resolution in Nigeria. It will also offer insights for interfaith dialogue initiatives and community-based peacebuilding programs.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected Christian churches in Jos, Plateau State. It examines teachings, sermons, and church-led programs aimed at promoting peace and resolving conflicts. The study is limited to Christian congregants and does not include other religious groups, although findings may have broader implications for interfaith peacebuilding.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Christian Teachings: Doctrines, sermons, and biblical principles that emphasize moral behavior, forgiveness, reconciliation, and social harmony.

Peacebuilding: Efforts aimed at preventing conflict, resolving disputes, and promoting social cohesion within communities.

Conflict Resolution: Processes and strategies used to address and resolve disagreements, disputes, or hostilities between individuals or groups.

Church-Led Initiatives: Programs and interventions organized by churches to influence behavior, promote reconciliation, and reduce conflict.
